DESCRIPTION

Supplementary material for Shibut's book on Paul Morphy (ISBN paperback 0486435741---Dover Books or ISBN library binding 0939433168---Caissa Editions) detailing dozens of obscure Morphy games introduced to the world by David Lawson in the late 1970s.

TRANSCRIPT

  • Addendum

In preparing the "Complete Games" section of Paul Morphy and the Evolution of Chess Theory, I mostly assembled material from well-known .. sources: Morphy books by J. J. Lowenthal, Geza Maroczy, Phillip Sergeant and David Lawson. The result was the largest Morphy game collection ever published. However, the possibility remained that additional games would tum up. Indeed, it would have been surprising if not a single other example ever came to light.

David Lawson's 1976 biography Paul Morphy: The Pride and Sorrow of Chess focused upon the affairs of Morphy's life rather than his chess per se, but it also offered several previously unknown games, which I of course included in Paul Morphy and the Evolution of Chess Theory. It turns out that Lawson had unearthed some additional unpublished or forgotten games that, for whatever reason, he omitted from his book. However, he presented them in the August 1978 and September 1979 issues of The British Chess Magazine. Subsequently, some of these games were reprinted elsewhere, but I remained ignorant of all but about a dozen until the BCM articles were called to my attention in the wake of my book's publication.

While the games herein are not "important" in the sense of shedding new light on Morphy's theoretical or stylistic attitudes, it is naturally my hope that they can be integrated into a subsequent edition. In the meantime, I want to thank Caissa Editions for the opportunity to issue this addendum, by which Paul Morphy and the Evolution of Chess Theory can remain the most complete collection of Morphy's chess possible.

  • Publisher's Postscript

Anyone who has researched Morphy's games is bound to be struck by the difficulties and the slipshod nature of much of what has been reported. In part this situation is caused by the evolution of reporting chess games and the circum-stances then prevailing where chess playing was scarcely accepted as a profession. In Morphy's case his family, or at least his mother, seemed determined to assert that Paul's chess playing skills should never be accorded the status of a vocation, and in time this became a strong factor in his emotional problems-especially since his career at law never succeeded, while the thing he did best was regarded as something akin to a freak of nature.

At that time it was not unusual that a reported game was between "Mr. R." and Mr. Morphy, or whoever the other opponent happened to be, as if to say that it was unkind to disclose that Mr. R. got crunched in fifteen moves. In addition, games given in books seldom ever gave the source for the score. In cases where the game was not part of a major tournament or match there is often dispute in published versions as to just where the game ended since some editors were willing to forego the last ten moves or so in a hopeless position and wind up with a final "and Black lost after several more moves", or something similar. Furthermore, where the editor had only a scribbled original score sheet, one must often wonder if the score was even accurate-a situation that continues to this day.

So great was Morphy's reputation that several unscrupulous amateurs were all too eager to claim victories that never occurred. The subject of spurious Morphy games has been reviewed in Lawson's book on Morphy. It is rather well accepted that at least the Deacon "games "and the Ruggles "game" were fakes, but how many more which have been accepted as genuine are also concoctions will probably never be known. Of course, it is those games which Morphy lost which are most subject to question.

Games given by LOwenthal in his 1860 book Morphy's Games are virtually certain as being genuine in every particular since they were presumably checked by Morphy himself. His well-known fabulous memory and irreproachable

    A-14

  • character are likely as good a guarantee as one could get for the accuracy of those games.

As examples of the difficulties facing Morphy researchers, I shall cite two instances. In Eis Escacs a Catalunya for November 1934 a game (Partida 1312) is given as "Tudzinsky" - Morphy played in Paris in 1854. Of course, Morphy was never in Paris in 1854, and the game is really versus Budzinsky and was played in Paris in 1859 (Game 249 in this book). In Game 98: Morphy - Maurian and "Le Carp", as given already by Maroczy in the 1909 edition of his book of Morphy's games, it seems virtually certain that "Le Carp" must be "Le Carpentier" since that was his mother's maiden name and because the game appears, from its date and the consultation with Maurian, to have been a friendly local game. Somewhere the full name was undoubtedly truncated.

In view of the determined efforts made to locate other Morphy games even over a hundred years ago, and the relatively sparse number of sources in Morphy's day, it seems unlikely that many more genuine games will be unearthed, except possibly from presently dormant caches of private papers. Morphy did indeed play many more casual games than are presented here, but in many cases it is unlikely that any records were kept. Morphy himself was a very modest man not given to blowing his own trumpet over one-sided wins against rank amateurs. Naturally, it is questionable how much value there is in lop-sided routs of weak neophytes.

Should any reader be able to provide additional games with documentation, he or she is invited to submit them to the publisher for possible inclusion in any future editions of this book.
