A huge thank you to Chris and Jane Osborne for stepping up to the mark again andputting the material together so you can enjoy this Bumper Christmas and New Yearedition of Paul Magazine and thanks too to all those who have contributed material. We still miss Trevor Walker so much in so many ways..not least the jokes and relatedfunnies he provided for our amusement. To ensure the magazine continues we des-perately need to find some volunteers to share the production activity with Chris. All the material is gathered by a small dedicated team of writer and wolfhounds butwhat is missing is a number of people who would take turns to arrange this materialas it comes in into a form that can be printed and handed over to the staplers andbundlers. This is not a complicated task to anyone with minimum computing experience. Themore who volunteer the less frequently you will be called upon. If you think you mightbe able to help in this way please contact Andrew Yates for full job description andrenumneration package ( JOKE JOKE !! ) on [email protected]

Advent Message from Revd Julyan DrewI write this letter as we approach Advent. Advent, the word comingfrom the Latin for “a coming, approach or arrival”, is for the churcha season of waiting, preparation and expectation. During theseweeks we look towards Christmas and the celebration of the birthof Jesus and as part of that we shall hear some familiar words andsing some familiar songs. Doubtless, at some time over Adventand as we move into Christmas we shall read or hear, perhapseven sing, about a man dressed in camel’s hair, and living onlocusts and wild honey. In the words and works of this man was echoed the words of anearlier prophet, Isaiah, “In the wilderness prepare the way for theLord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” For manyof us associated with Paul Church, this character will always beassociated with the Passion Play performances and a certainperson making a dramatic entry into the church shouting, “Re-pent!” This character, John the Baptiser, drew people to himself, calling on them to move from the familiar, to change direction, tolook another way, to be open to the possibility of seeing thingsdifferently, preparing the way for a God already drawing near tothem.

Some of you will know of Michael Johnson, the copper worker whowas involved in making the furniture for the Sanctuary at NewlynTrinity. (The font came “on tour” to Paul a few years back, and Ialong with it to share in some baptisms at just about this time ofyear.) In conversation once, Michael told me that his work was tohelp people see things differently. I suggested we might be in asimilar line of work, except that I use words.More powerful than words, however, in making people see thingsdifferently, are actions. St Gregory the Theologian or Gregory ofNazianzus as he was also known was a 4th-century Archbishop ofConstantinople who gave his life to Christ after being deliveredfrom a storm while sailing to Athens. His feast day falls on the 2nd

of January. That being the day after we might have made our NewYear resolutions, it’s interesting to note that he said, “Grace isgiven not to them who speak [their faith] but to those who live theirfaith.” I take that to mean that we only get to find out what faith isreally about by living it. Perhaps it’s like my boat. I’ve talked for acouple of years now about what it will be like to sail it. I’ll only findout if I finish the work on her and get her out of Newlyn Harbour!“Grace is given not to them who speak [their faith] but to those wholive their faith.” Perhaps we might bear that thought in mind as wetravel together through the coming weeks and celebrate what is forChristians the life-affirming and life-changing event of the Incarna-tion.And if we do bear it in mind, perhaps we might also reflect on somequestions: Do we as individuals and churches help people withinand beyond the churches, by our (faith inspired?) actions, to seethings differently? If so, how? And how better might we do that? And if this letter is read by someone not usually part of the church, perhaps you might be kind enough to tell us, what do our actionsas a church say to you?Meanwhile, every blessing for you one and all for the expectationof Advent, the joy of Christmas and the opportunities of the NewYear.

Churchwardens’ Report November 2014

Andrew suggested a regular piece for the magazine about the East win-dow project. A logical next step seemed to form the monthly churchwar-dens’ report into that regular piece, which is why it may read a bit oddly toyou who know some of the background already.

Georgian Window: We have had an invoice from Cornwall Heritagebuilders for the work done on the clear window. It needs to be inspected andsigned off by David Scott, the Diocesan surveyor who we work with, but he iscurrently querying the invoice, which is larger than we were led to expect byseveral hundred pounds. We’re also not sure if they’ve quite finished the jobinside, so are querying that too. Watch this space. Faculty: Progress on getting official Diocesan approval to start the win-dow restoration project was delayed due to some papers going missing. Thathas now been resolved, and we’ll be sending the next stage of the applicationoff next week. Church Radiator: David Toms has now been back to us about the ra-diator which was causing concern. He‘s had a look at it, but thinks it isn’t urgent. He has put it on his ‘to do in Spring 2015’ list, but says if it gets worse to let himknow and he’ll come straight away and deal with in. East Window: When the children from Mousehole school came up tosee the remembrance spaces in church, we talked to them about the windowand encouraged them to get close up to it, touch the glass, look at the stone-work, and try to estimate how many pieces of glass there are in the whole win-dow, based on counting those in one of the bottom sections. We’re going tohave a competition next year for people to estimate the number, but without giv-ing anything away it was a lot more than the 500 one of them guessed…… Kelly Rowe, the recently appointed Diocesan communications person, visited the church on the same day as the children, and was very impressedwith both all the remembrance spaces and also with the window. During the recent really interesting lecture in church - ’1914: A CenturyOn’, we had hoped to light the East window from outside. The weather was sobad we decided it wouldn’t be safe to do so, but an unexpected result was thatwhen spot lit inside when it’s dark outside, the deteriorating condition of thestonework and glass was all the more evident. It was depressing to see all the

crumbling stone, but it really emphasised that we need to honour urgently ourresponsibility to it as a significant memorial and historical work of art. At the last PCC meeting we created a list of fundraising events to takeus through the coming year. We’ll be agreeing when to do what very soon andwill publish details next month.

Anyone who’d like to be involved in any of those events, or who’d like tohelp with funding applications, please talk to a PCC member or to Nancy, Maryor Andrew. £120k’s a lot of money to raise, so any other ideas for fundraising, bigor small, do share them with us.

The Childrens SocietyIt seems almost beyond belief that in 2014, in Britain, one of the mostcivilized societies in the world, there are children living in poverty andneglect. There are, strangely one might think, many definitions of whatconstitutes poverty. One definition which is often used in the UK is that ofthe family living below 60% of the median income. Put simply, if half of thehouseholds in Britain had an income of £15,000 or less and and the otherhalf more, then poverty begins at a household income of £9,000 or less.

Whichever definition is used, there is no escape from the fact that childpoverty is a state of not having enough food, warmth, shelter, education orparental love, care and protection.

Poverty is an enormous topic and exists in varying degrees throughout theworld. It can probably only ever be tackled comprehensively at governmentlevel and then only if the political will is there. It can be and is tackledeffectively at local level by the Childrens Society. The Society fights byoffering immediate help to runaway children and by providing help-centresand phone cards for children who have been subjected to abuse, particularly domestic abuse. It lobbies hard and effectively at governmentlevel to bring in the changes to legislation necessary for the betterprotection of children.

The Childrens Society was formed in 1881 by a Sunday school teacher,Edward Rudolf and the present chair of trustees is our own Bishop Tim,Bishop of Truro. The following quote is probably as good a statement ofthe Society’s mission as any:-

“Together, we tackle child poverty and neglect head on, from helpingfamilies trapped in debt, child runaways and young carers, to stoppingchild sexual exploitation.”

We all have endless calls on our charitable giving but it’s hard to see abetter cause in the UK than that which, at its grimmest level, rescueschildren from sexual abuse. It is a searing indictment of our society thatthose last two nouns ever occur in the same sentence.

Of course it takes funding and this is the good part about our ChildrensSociety collections here. You are not asked to reach into your pockets forfolding money although you can if you insist. Just take a box, put in onto

MY IMPRESSIONS OF THE SOMME.

I had no idea what to expect. i had no idea just how peaceful and serenethis battlefield area was to be, until I visited during an autumnal November. The Somme. The weather was glorious, sunny, clear and vibrant. Gently rolling fields ofsome soft greens, pale gold where the stubble sat, and dark-black newlyploughed earth. The sun picked up the shine from the tops of the ploughedareas, as we journeyed along. But the sky was the bluest of blues. Soblue. Suddenly, the scarlet of late poppies, fragile and fading soon. Andnext to the blooms a rusting piece of metal possibly from some war ma-chine. And there, a part of the support for the barbed wire which stretchedand coiled across the landscape.Exploring tiny wooded copses was a delight. The fallen leaves, crisp andmulticoloured, lay deep in the trenches. Falling leaves drifting down re-minded me of lives lost. So many lives. So many acorns, promising newlife next spring. Row upon row of tall straight trees sat on the heights, row upon row ofwhite headstones seemed to be everywhere. Each corner we turned, an-other cemetery.Yet, this landscape left me feeling peaceful and serene. Yes, there wereshadows. Soft, gentle shadows of palest grey, just on the periphery of myvision. Not shadows of horror, but of gentle smiling faces, watching and atpeace. I shall return.

Pool in Peril from the seaDescribed as one of the most unusual and pleasingly designed lidos of the era, thePenzance Jubilee Pool was designed in the early 1930s by Captain F Latham, theBorough Engineer. The pool was opened with great celebration in May 1935, the yearof King George V’s Silver Jubilee. The Pool was built upon a traditional bathing spot at the Battery Rocks near theharbour. Cleverly designed to cope with the full ferocity of the Cornish seas, the pool istriangular in shape yet with gentle curves, making it a most pleasant environment. A contemporary guide book tells us that: “In many respects the design is uniquearchitecturally, partly from a point of view of necessity in conforming with existingconditions of wave elements and rocks which controlled the outline. Streamlines havebeen used to the greatest advantage in meeting the direction of the storm waves, whilea Cubist style has been adopted in the interior in providing diving platforms and steps…The whole pool is surrounded by high streamlined sea walls terraced up within theinterior so as to give aspect and effect. They also serve to strengthen the structure.”These walls also protect swimmers from strong, offshore winds and form terraces forspectators. The pool was a popular amenity for over 50 years. However, by 1992 the pool hadbecome dilapidated to the extent that its future operation was in doubt. But luckily aretired local architect, John Clarke, came to the rescue. He was alarmed when aproposal to build a copper coloured pyramid structure over the pool was proposed. TheJubilee Pool Association was formed and thanks to his direct input the pool was listed. In the following two years, John and members of the JPA worked voluntarily withPenwith District Council to secure essential grant funding to contribute to the pool’srestoration over two phases. In 1994, after essential restructural works, the poolreopened to much acclaim, and the jubilant scenes witnessed when the pool firstopened in 1935 were repeated some 60 years later. In 2009 there was a real threat that the pool’s annual funding might be lost, buthappily in recent years Cornwall Council have recognised its importance as a localamenity and national heritage asset. In 2012 the Cornwall Council transferred theoperation of all their leisure services to a new charitable trust, Carrick Leisure Trust. The Friends of Jubilee Pool was established in 1992. Originally known asThe Jubilee Pool Association, its members’ aim over the past 22 years has been toensure that the pool survives, both as a vital local amenity and as a listed building ofunique architectural merit and national importance. Friends believe that the pool is strategically important in the futureregeneration of the town of Penzance and wish to see it fulfil its potential, whilst alsobecoming increasingly self-sufficient and less reliant on public funding.

Members include many local people, but numerous Friends live in other partsof the UK and even abroad. All have one common passion – they all love the beautifulJubilee Pool and wish to see it remain open and thriving. The organisation’s principal activity is to raise awareness and promote thepool, so there is extensive liaison with magazines, newspapers and other media toensure the pool is publicised to a wider audience. However membership fees are alsoused to enhance the pool, for example these beautiful flags designed by local artistLucy Birbeck were commissioned by the Friends in 2012 to celebrate both theOlympics and the Jubilee. Friends have paid for new flags every season for the last fiveyears and believe they enhance both the pool and the promenade in equal measure.

In February 2014 winter storms caused serious damage to the pool, whichwas already in need of major structural work. As a result of campaigning by TheFriends and local councillors a bid for £1.9m to carry out improvements to the JubileePool in Penzance was submitted to the Coastal Communities Fund on the 9th May2014 and was granted on August 1st 2014. The bid includes funding to carry out essential structural works on the Pool, including repairs to the storm damage, and a two year funding package to enable thePool to become more sustainable in the future. These include the development of anew management structure and a range of new acquatic activities, including GroupFitness, Water Polo and Kayaking and Sailing. The bid, which has been put together byCornwall Council, has the full support of Penzance Town Council and the Friends ofJubilee Pool.

The Friends of Jubilee Pool are aiming to raise £160,000 this summer tomatch fund the grant and help to bring the pool back to its former glory. If you loveJubilee Pool, please help us to reach our goal by joining the Friends, donating to ourcampaign, or arranging a fundraising event- or all three! All the money raised will gotowards restoring and keeping the pool open. Our aim is simple, to ensure Jubilee Poolsurvives and is never put at risk of closure again. LidoListen. The rain has stopped. So has the wind.Back in time voices are echoing around,There’s laughter, squealing, splashing.

Feelthe sun, hot and white, pinning you down.Factor zero olive oil basted skinSlowly grilling to holiday brown and browner still.Bodies turning, spit-like, for an even finish.

See.You need to shade your eyes,White-washed walls, blue doors, hot dark pink tiles.Steps to terraces and walkways,More steps to water, shallow, deep and deeper still,

Feelthe water, shocking after the heat.Frigid turns to cold, to cool, to perfect silky smooth. The first strokes fast, then slowing, relishingthe weightless ease of effort.

See.The water is calm, smooth, evenly blue.Boards jut out, high and scarily higher.A central raft is tethered for rest, for racing and for rendezvous.

Boys watching girls watching boys watching girls go by.Giggly gaggles, jostling, joking, posing, preening.

A day to savour. A day to remember.

HINTS AND TIPS FROM SUE.

I discovered this purely by accident, and it works! Most ladies today use facial wipes to cleanse their skin. Theproducts used in wipes are usually pure and gentle. I was remov-ing my makeup one evening while sitting in the lounge. I spotteda dirty mark on the arm of my leather chair. Instead of getting adamp cloth, I used the facial wipe. In seconds the mark had comeoff, leaving a slight coating of a fine oil or possibly lanolin. I nowuse the wipes, when I've cleaned my skin, and the leather is look-ing pristine.

PEACE.

If a sudden silence fell on all mankind,And we were still,Would we notice that the wordy, worldly wrangle had abated,Would we listen, would we know,That the world appreciated,That Time had held its breath one moment,And awaitedThe leaping lancing living light of love

And when from the pulsing centre of this Paradisic glow,Comes the new-born cry of reason,Would we recognise and know?Would we let its peace invade us?Are we ready for its balm?Or are we still too busy for that still, small, voice of calm.
