The Paul Rolland String Method Workshop Paul Rolland String Method Workshop at George Mason University gives teachers of all levels opportunities to learn the internationally­renowned playing and teaching techniques of Paul Rolland. All aspects of the Workshop are based on his DVD and book “The Teaching of Action in String Playing” as defined and demonstrated by qualified instructors who were students of the late Mr. Rolland. His movement techniques are usable in string class and private studios in both introductory and remedial string education. Emphasis is on violin and viola. Grab your bow and go!

Paul Rolland (1911 ­ 1978)  was Professor of Violin and String Pedagogy, Univ. of Illinois, and conducted several hundred string workshops in the U.S. and abroad before his death in 1978. Internationally renowned for his innovative approach to string teaching, he emphasized correct motion patterns and playing free from excessive tension. He directed Univ. of Illinois String Research Project in the 1960s and 1970s that produced the film series “The Teaching of Action in String Playing”.
