Vital Statistics• Paul Signac was born on November 11,

1863 in Paris, France.

• He was an architect at the age of 18, before he became an artist.

• He was very good friends with Claude Monet and Georges Seurat.

Personal Background

• Paul Signac was a French neo-impressionist painter who, working with Georges Seurat helped develop the pointillist. style.

• He was born in Paris.

• On November 7, 1892 Signac married Berthe Robles at the town hall of the 18th district in Paris

• In 1897, they acquired a house in Saint-Tropez called La Hune.

• There he had an art studio constructed on August 16, 1898.

• On October 2,1913 they had a baby girl who they named Ginette.

• Paul had the baby with another women, but him and Berthe remained good friends until his death.

• Paul Signac is buried at the Pere Lachaise Cemetery, which is the biggest in Paris.

Influences

• Georges Seurat was a major inspiration to Signac.

• He loved the systematic methods of work by Seurat.

• The coast and water were also major influences to him. He loved to paint the water, and every summer he sailed to Italy and then painted the beautiful coasts that he encountered.

This painting has pointillism and luminismAlso. I also chose this painting because, Paul Signac loved to paint boats and the water. Thisis a perfect example!

“The Large Pine”-1893

This painting shows impressionism.This is because Paul Signac made the brushstrokes visible. You can see this very well in the grass.

Ocean Gliders

• My art is of sailboats on the ocean. I named it “Ocean Gliders” because, I think sailboats smoothly glide on the water. They are very peaceful, and I think that gliding is peaceful. I used pointillism (the sun, the sailboat’s reflection on the water, and the sun’s reflection on the water). I also used luminism. (one side of the sky is lighter which is where the sun is.) And lastly, I used impressionism. (on the water and in the sky)

Strengths/Weaknesses

• The hardest part of my project, was actually making the art in general, because I had to incorporate 4 different stlyes into one piece

• The strongest part of my project is that I effectively used all 4 types of styles that Paul Signac used.
