Tomorrow’sTHInkers

When you come to Paul Smith’s College, you’ll see pretty quickly that we have our own brand of thinking. It’s about the how and the why. It’s about using what you know to solve tomorrow’s problems. And it’s never bound by walls. When it comes to our brand of thinking…

It’saspersonalaspersonalgets… with a student-to-faculty ratio of just 14:1, your professors will know what you want out of life, and they’ll work every day to help you get there.

Itwillintroduceyoutocutting-edgetechnology… as it has for our forestry students, who use sophisticated logging equipment, state-of-the-art computers, and optics as part of their active learning experience.

Itmighttakeyouaroundtheworld… like it did for eight students who spent two weeks camping and braving the wild in Siberia exploring issues surrounding ecotourism.

Itwillconnectyouwithnature… as it does for students in Kirk Peterson’s Adirondacks 232 class, who help him rip through the Hudson River Gorge every spring on a 17-mile whitewater rafting trip.

Itwillputyoutothetest… which is exactly what happens in our St. Regis Café, a full-service restaurant that is operated entirely by our hospitality, resort, and culinary management students.

Internships are a huge part of the

Paul Smith’s experience, and we have

connections with some of the biggest and

best outfits in the world. To see what we

mean you don’t need to look any further

than Emily Daubney, a hotel, resort, and

tourism management major from Waterford,

New York. Emily put her knowledge and

skills to the test during an internship at

Lake Placid’s famed Mirror Lake Inn Resort

and Spa—rated the #11 ski hotel in North

America by Condé Nast Traveler.

“Working at the Mirror Lake Inn has been a great experience, mainly because I’ve been able to work at the four-diamond level. The Inn has very high standards of service, and as a result I can deliver no less than my best. This type of atmosphere has been instrumental in preparing me for my career.”

When it comes to the environment, everything’s connected. And that’s exactly what you’ll see at Paul Smith’s. We infuse greenness into every aspect of the learning experience—social, economic, environmental, theoretical, and practical—creating tomorrow’s generation of environmental leaders.

4

Tomorrow’sInnovATorsAt Paul Smith’s, our idea of green goes far beyond the thousands of acres of trees and landscape surrounding campus. It’s in our DNA. When it comes to environmental sustainability, we teach it. We practice it. We promote it. We live it. And a lot of the time it’s our students leading the way…

werecycled more than 24,500 pounds of paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminum, and tin as part of the nationwide RecycleMania Tournament.

wepower virtually our entire campus by wind energy credits, one of the few colleges in the U.S. that can make that claim.

weremoved more than 30 vending machines from our campus to conserve energy, and we instituted a no-Styrofoam policy.

weeliminated the use of trays in our cafeteria, saving more than 50,000 gallons of water.

Page 7: Paul Smith's College viewbook

Environmental sustainability becomes

more and more a part of our lives every

day. And it’s only going to get better. That

reality isn’t lost on Steven Dancho. Steven,

a double major in fisheries and wildlife

and environmental science, was part of

the student group that led the initiative to

remove most of the vending machines on

campus in an effort to save energy.

“Everyone who’s here has an interest in this. The students are really active when it comes to sustainability issues because we know that’s the future. A lot of the things that have happened were started by students. And the administration here is great about listening and helping put our ideas into action.” —Steve Dancho

Tomorrow’s Achievers

Our students are never afraid to go international with their fun. With Montreal just a few hours to the north, you can make a weekend out of it and dive into the culture, sports, food, shopping, and fun provided by one of Canada’s coolest cities.

Tomorrow’sACHIeversFew places on earth can match the setting you’ll find at Paul Smith’s College, located in the heart of the six-million-acre Adirondack Park. In fact, we’ve been ranked #1 by Newsweek magazine

for having the most resort-like campus in the U.S. There’s no better place…

Toplay… you can snowmobile, hunt, camp, fish, snowboard, or shred the slopes on nearby Whiteface Mountain, consistently rated #1 in the Northeast by Skiing Magazine.

Towork… you’ll have 14,000 acres of forests, wetlands, lakes, and streams as your own living laboratory right outside your front door.

Toexperience… you’ll be just 20 miles from Lake Placid, New York, home to inspiring galleries, theatres, and some of the world’s top hotels, restaurants, and resorts.

Toengage… you can rock out at a free summer concert, explore the culture of Lake Placid, or build a monster-sized float or snow sculpture for the 10-day Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

“I came for a tour of the college and that was it. Looking out at the lake and the mountain, it’s amazing that you can come to a place like this for college. You get to enjoy the outdoors, drive five minutes to get to a beach, go swimming or hiking or camping with friends. It’s unlike anything you can imagine.”

Tomorrow’s PLAYErs

Our woodsmen’s team isn’t the only group getting it done on the national level. The Paul Smith’s Nordic relay team recently finished third at the USCSA national championships in Colorado, and our snowshoe team has been victorious two years running at the International Snowshoe Championships.

There’s no doubt about it—when you come to Paul Smith’s you’ll get involved with something you never imagined yourself doing. Just ask student Maegen Dills, who had never even seen a lumberjack competition before coming to Paul Smith’s. That didn’t stop her from joining the woodsmen’s team and winning intercollegiate competitions.

Tomorrow’sPLAyersIt isn’t everyone who can live in a place surrounded by trees, snow, and wilderness. Just the lucky ones. We say that because it’s the way our people live and have fun that sets us apart. Every day at Paul Smith’s is a chance to do things you might never have imagined…

extremeextracurriculars… snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, rugby, the Eco Challenge, and canoeing in the “90-Miler” are just a few examples of how we take extracurriculars to the extreme.

InspiringAthletics…our Bobcats sports teams compete in soccer, cross country, volleyball, Nordic skiing, and basketball; and our famed woodsmen’s team has a reputation for dominating at the national level.

outdoorAdventures… it’s what we’re about, and includes alpine skiing, beach volleyball, rock and ice climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, snowboarding, and winter camping, among others.

“There is definitely a common passion for the outdoors here at Paul Smith’s. It’s been a great honor to be part of the woodsmen’s team these past three years. I’ve gotten to know a great group of people, and it felt amazing to win this past summer after all of the hard work put in. I know the experience has made me a better competitor, and a better person.”

When it comes to competitive lumberjacking,

few schools can match Paul Smith’s. Our
