RETIRED MEN'S ASSOCIATION OF GREENWICH, Inc. (RMA) Invites you to its meeting March 22, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, Lafayette Place, Greenwich, CT. Paula Hopewell “Abraham Lincoln and the Border Region: Perspectives from the Mason-Dixon LineHow did living in the border region influence Abraham Lincoln, including the development of his extraordinary compassion? Paula Hopewell believes that this character trait was essential in helping Lincoln steer the country through the Civil War. She will also detail some of the tragedies of Lincoln’s personal life, discuss some of the Kentuckians who were his intimates, and highlight excerpts from his exquisite speeches. She will also share insights and stories from her attendance at Lincoln Forum Symposia, which are held annually in Gettysburg. In addition, as Ms. Hopewell is a resident of the Nutmeg State, the lecture will include information about Connecticut‘s role in the War, including Harriet Beecher Stowe’s connection to Cincinnati, the Copperhead movement in Connecticut, and 1860 and 1864 Presidential election results for nearby Connecticut towns. As was notably the case in a divided Westchester County, many Connecticut towns voted against Abraham Lincoln in his bid for re-election in 1864, including Hopewell’s own Brookfield. Ms. Hopewell grew up in Northern Kentucky, near Cincinnati. She earned a B.S. in math, and an MBA. After working for ten years in marketing research, she became a homemaker. Since moving to Brookfield, CT in 1997, Paula has developed a strong interest in her favorite Kentuckian, Abraham Lincoln. She joined the Lincoln Forum in 2010, which holds annual meetings each November in Gettysburg and is also a member of the Civil War Roundtable of Fairfield County and the Lincoln Group of New York. Next week: Page Knox, Art Lecturer, “John Singer Sargent and Friends” The Greenwich Retired Men’s Association offers a free program every Wednesday that is open to the public, both men and women; no reservations are required. Our social break starts at 10:40AM followed promptly by our speaker at 11:00AM. Programs are at the First Presbyterian Church, 1 West Putnam in Greenwich.
