SP 1 is a student project in the 3rd semester of the 3-year bachelor program at the Faculty of Architecture. The assignment is to create a conceptual proposal of a set

of 1 story high residential houses with a typology of houses in a row. The assigned location for the project is situated in the eastern part of Belgrade, next to the “Višnjica”

suburb, and right before “Lešće” cemetary. The location is further constrained with a frame of 200 by 400 meters, for a more focused research. The start of the project

was a visit to this location, and analysis of the present contents, conditions and factors influencing this space proceeding with a newly formed methods for designing.

The analysis of the terrain, among other approaches, was chosen to be the driving method for

further research. Planning and positioning a route for a simple path from the lowest to the

highest point in the framed field, led to descovering an existing natural line throughout the

terrain, composed of closely lined up contour lines of different heights. This further continued

to use as a parameter for placement of an aligned system for producing the set of residential

houses. The idea was to use the present conditions of the space as much as possible and as a

supportive context for the new interventions which are to be minimal in terms of interfering the

present structure of the terrain and its surroundings. The system should work with, and cooper-

ate with the context in a synchronized manner, with no waste of matter.

The next primary perspective for further research is a section of the

terrain, and implementation of the system. From the idea of

self-sustainability and use of the located terrain matter in a continuous

flow, emerged a geometry which would further be the working flow of

the unfolding structure. A machine for producing space, digging through

the terrain, and switching the positions of volumes, opening up a gap in

the ground behind it and at the same time, directing the geomerty of the

construction and an included program for the housing itself. Afterwords,

a spacial organization followed.

The spatial organization within a single unit works with a construction of the whole

system, but is fitted to accompany the division between the home and the office. As

the structure of the system devides the two sides of the field, to the lower side, a

residential access is assigned, and for the upper side an office access. The inside is

devided by trancelucent walls and vertical communications. A passage through this

border is also present inside the unit. Units are formed of prefabricated elements and

can be fitted inside of the metal construction in different ways. This particular unit fits

inside two spaces in the construction chain. A bigger unit can also be fitted taking 3 or

more spaces in the chain. This system presents a new strategy for planning and a

model for residential/business settlements.

SP2 is a student project in the 4th semester of the Bachelor’s programme in the faculty of Architecture in Belgrade. The assign-

ment is a pavillion-type building for bearing 40% of the space for administrative purposes in the IT sector, and the other 60%

for an exhibition space. The assigned location is in the New Belgrade, in a wide open area of the city on the north-west side of

the river Sava, with wide streets and modern buildings such as shopping malls and office buildings. The research took off with

the analysis of the behaviour of space in different horizontal access communication restrictions as shown in the first sketches.

Tho horizontal passages led to many space-organizational

challenges, but also led to adequete solutions, without giving up on

the leading idea. Horizontal spatial organization of a double spiral

created unusable narrow angled corners which were solved with

an ongoing concept within this project. The concept of the horizon-

tal curvature of space, and directing lines culminating in the centre

was simply transfered in a vertical position.A new view to the

project opened up with this act. The lines of curved passages in the

top view now are siluettes of the curved walls in the section view.

New curved cuts were added to the walls opening them up from

the bottom or from the top, erasing multiple problems with the

narrow angled dead ends. This way the commitment to the pursuit

of using curves in the project was retained,and problems solved.

Analytical approach to the context - the cliff at the North sea, led to

spontainious and in some way expected surfacing of the object in

its complete physical structure from the utilitary, constructive, to

the asthetical from its location. Characteristics of the current state

of the context are used as a potential for designing. A special

attention was given to avoiding any demolitions and reshaping of

the cliff, ecologically, constructively and aesthetically. The final

object is lightly resting, attached to its terrain whith a predomi-

nantly vertical support, but horizontal as well, near the top of the

construction. This object allows a unique oppertunity for vertical

communications with an open view to the open sea.

The lighthouse is attached, with a usable space organized in a way

that it’s using already present shapes in the cliff with minimal

interventions. Transparent fasade absorbs daylight making this

lighthouse an object of light.

The question of protecting the beach and the need for the guard was the motive fduring the production

of the project. The decision for a specific location, a beach which is disappearing “Ada Bojana” in Monte-

negro, was a frame for the research. In general, en environmentally consciouss approach was started and

it unfolded until the end, until the very physical structure of the objects and the shapes of the movements

conditioned by the objects. The case of this particular location is primarily an ecological problem, and the

proposal isn’t focused towards instant changes for the interest of people. A specific design approach was

needed for solving an issue of a dissapearing land underneath the water, and a specific shape of the

building intended for the correction of the terrain which is in a crytical state was needed. As the riverflow

of the river Bojana which flows into Adriatic sea is slowing down due to the multipbe hydro power plant

built upland, the force of the river is decreasing, and the riverbed is losing its shape as it is widening.

Besides the physical structure of the location which is at risk, the whole underwater life, flora, fauna,

salinity, temperature and the purity of the water itself is also in a dangerous situation. These are the

motives for protecting the beach.

Through analysing the movement of the sand on the riverbed, an idea to create opsticles for allowing sand

to collect around them arose. Ball shaped satelites would be scattered around on the ground which is in

the most places here only upto half a meter under the water, except for far out of the coast. The sand

which is naturally moving on the riverbed would collect itself around these objects untill the sand has

collected enough so the surface is above the water. Afterwords, these objects would be taken out and

placed elsewhere in a systematic manner, so the land can be extracted above the water. These ball

shaped satelites would contain different instruments for analysing the situation of the riverflow and other

aspects of the location. A vertical tower which inland would be the centre for collecting data from the

satelites, aswell as a home for the people in cahrge of the system.

“Underground shelter” is a

theme for researching the

possibilities of assigning a

physical underground structure

to a certain notion or a subject.

Observation of the elusive

behavior of daylight and its

relations with the physical

forms was the motive for

developing the underground

shelter for light. The task to

adapt a physical structure to

daylight in order to collect and

preserve it in an underground

environment was tackled with

the idea of using a skylight

prism in a fissure on the

ground, connecting the lowest

point underneath it with the

overground end of the prism

as the collector. Aditionally, a

system of ramps leading to the

bottom was included.

Encasing space, potentiating and cultivating its content

with the structure of the casing on which it can feed and

grow out of is a challenge for a shelter. Temporary or

permanent stay of an elusive resident is directed by the

physical structure of a built environment. Understanding

the nature of light, and its behaviour in relation with objects

taken into account were the guidelines for creating a

structure for seizing the light. An overground object which

stands separated from the ground and open enough for

light to come in, but closed off enough so it is directed in a

certain way.

A narrow corridor lifted from the ground through which light

passes and is more conciously observed and looked into,

when there is an object for constraining it as a refference

system for comparason.

A roof extension is a project for analysing the

context raised from the ground in an urban tissue.

Assigned simple shaped buildings bordering the

space between with no additional information are

the context for this space.

A simple geometry of the empty space is to be filled

with a shape which functiones physically and

aesthetically. As the starting point is emptyness, the

first step was to fill in with an unspecific shape. As

an opposite approach was also possible, emptyness

was slowly reduced as a volume. A full object is

consumed by emptyness from within, in an unspe-

cific manner. An organic way of the growth of

emptyness is achieved, and the outside of this

volume is matter, compressed in the corners and

sides of the imaginary closed-off space, bordered by

3 story high neighbouring houses.

Monoliths are a series of seven three dimensional paintings evolving from a 1 meter by 50 centimeters

module panel. A space research carried out with two devices: Three dimensionally presented polygo-

nal objects of open and closed forms, and an impression of emptyness - sky. White objects are consti-

tuted and accentuated with their position in relation to the depiction of the sky. Their positions are

often switched, connected, disconnected, blended and annuled as they are forming a different optical

illusion. The spectator’s involvement with the paintings was one of the main motives in the research,

as a different visual experience was intended to be offered depending on their position. Sky, as a

representation of an elusive empty space is restricted in the frame, pushed out of, condensed in an

object and never experienced in one same way. The prehension on which is where is the spectator’s

decision to be made, and the paintings are there to offer a different perspective to the idea of space.

Scratching Surfaces is the name of the one night event, a production of the Fall 2014 internship

programme at the Danish studio for experimental art, Atelier Hotel Pro Forma which took place on

3rd of October, 2014. The project included several video installations, static art pieces, real time

mechanical contraptions and a performance. Through all pieces, a general theme was drawn from a

previous research at the atelier. Copenhagen Cable Surfing Park was the subject of the research,

throughout which several different currents of inspiration were cultivated. Three particularly similar

thought processes of artists Ingjerd H. Nergaard, Nanna M. Madsen and Luka Pavelka led to the

conception of producing a performance, synchronizing three different impressions into one piece.

The performance consisted of one narrative, one text consisting of sentences from multiple

interviews with different people, as answers to the question “Have you ever almost drownd?”,

which was later the opener for performance. A video projection of the reflection of a human figure

in the water was a second element, in close cooperation with two performers: One holding and

controlling the projection, and the other being projected with the video. The 8 minute long perfor-

mance was accompanied by a live sound scape performance by Tobias Lukassen.

The Copenhagen Cable Park was an assigned location for drawing inspiration, by

the artistic dirrector of Hotel Pro Forma, Kirsten Dehlholm. From there, it was up

to us to decide what to do. Water, air, motion, surface, in, out, above, under,

consciouseness, subconsciouseness, meditation, fear, danger, safety. All these,

and other notions were concidered. The ideas of polatities, dualism and divisions

were taken for further research, as these were concidered most subject to

bearing an open theme which could withstand different impressions and

mediums. Water was used as a tool for depicting a surface, as it is a clear

representation of the characteristics of both air, and water. The surface of the

water is constituted by the difference between the two, and it always holds both.

The research led to analysing the concept of the in-between space, which is a

border, with no dimension. Expansion of this space, or zooming-in, showed

remarkable susceptibilities for extracting inspiration and conclusions for the

research as well as the performance. From there, everything was assembled to

this structure, and was held in place until the very product-the performance. In an

area of human perceptions and and activities, two human figures were taken for

representing the conscious and the other (either subconscious or a different

entity). One figure is a living person, and the other is a video footage of the same

figure, captured as a reflection in the water. The difference clearly states the

certainty of the one and the uncertaithy of the other. Other theories were drawn

from this, but this was used as an open tool for questioning the spectators. From

here, many different possibilities for presenting the idea arose, such as visual play

between the projection and the real human figure and possible interaction, which

was further developed. One text consisting of multiple interviews was placed on

this frame and used as a dialog between the two human figure representations.

One asks the question, and afterwords, following the confusing nature of the text

itself, no reasonable social structure was used in forming the dialog. The

sentences were spoken out (or played from the speakers) alternately, one after

the other, but creating a feel of what a conversation would sound like. Sound

wise, different possibilities arose, and were used as much as possible. Which

sentence is recorded, and which is spoken out, was one of the challenges. On

this structure, various visual transformations took place. Synchronized, the

interaction with the projection and the human performer was also performed.

Various visual changes and distortions were controlled by the carrier of the projec-

tor (Luka Pavelka), opening up a wide variety of possible visual modifications on

the part of the projection placement, movement and the appearance. Sound

wise, a complementing live performed sound scape was implemented.

A conversation with the “other”. This is a text

containing answers from multiple interviews with

different people on the question “Have you ever

almost drownd?” The nature of the concluded

text was amplified by the sound scape, using

voice and tone alterations, as well as the visual

aspect by the performer’s movements, and the

movements of the projection.

Location: The chosen location is situated in the “Skojevsko” suburb of Belgrade,

away from the main city centres, which can be beneficial for one experimental

projact. The working subject is a row of abandoned garages on an edge of a hill in

this suburb. Garages are not used, and it can be approached to their rooftops over

a broken leaning concrete panes, which was a roof of one of the garages. The view

from the rooftops is spectaculer as it is open towards the suburb beneath, and the

Description of the solution for approaching the assigned location: Approaching

the row of garages, the first problem which arises is the accessability. The current

leaning concrete panel over which can now be accessed to the rooftops will be

removed. As a replacement, a bended ramp will be placed with a 5% slope. This

ramp will allow different uses for communicating vertically such as agricultural

works which can be placed on the rooftops. Aditionally, a staircase within the ramp

will be placed for faster communication. The ramp and the staircase as a package,

can be mounted on various locations, and their use can be xpanded.

The relation between the constructive elements and the

hypothetical vitality of the assigned location:

In the base drawings, elevation and sections is clearly

visible that the rooftops are in a mutual denivelation.

This relation will be kept and used as a frame for

segmenting different potential activities which will take

place here. For example, breeding goats, bees, growing

grapes, different fruits and other. Communications

between these denivelated rooftops would be practiced

over mounted ramps, so a continuous accessability

through all rooftops would be achived. In the detail

drawing 1, layers which are to be added to the rooftops

are shown. Garages will be thermoisolated aditionally

so the spaces inside can also be used for manufacturing

produce which is grown on the rooftops.

The idea for the project originated as an answer to the social -

political aspect of the expansions of the cities with a potential

75% inhabitants living in the cities, as a result of the centraliza-

tion of trade and agriculture. Exploring the values and and roles

of nature in an everyday life, as well as spaces in which it is

appreciated and interacted with actively, we discovered that the

lack of this relationship drastically reduces ones perception of a

human’s habitat as a living organism and todays problems in

terms of ecology, and in the lives of citizens. To this phenomenon

we are responding with a proposal for reanimating the rooftops

of abandoned buildings by greening and importing a layer subjec

to a model of miniature agriculture. This platform would, depend-

ing on the participation of the public, subversively place the

issues, ask questions and provide tools for finding the solution.

The chosen location for the concept is a row of abandoned

garages and their rooftops on which a spatial reanimation will be

achieved, and a model of a miniature urban agriculture. In the

garages themselves, aditional following activities will be carried

out. Green surfaces would be used for bio-dynamical growing of

organic fruits and vegetables as well as livestock breeding. The

production of the by-products will be carried out in the garages

themselves such as honey, goat milk soap, wine, and so on.

By-products and leftovers can further be used for compost and

making fertilizer, so a closed production loop can be acheived.

As a following activities, an educational program would be

organized for the youth in the form of workshops for experi-

ments, as a tool for raising conciouseness about

self-sustainability, energy resources, food and the importance of

rational consumption.

Neglected Bigness is the name of the W2 workshop withing the BELGRADE.SCAPES:LAB project. The theme of the

workshop is the suburb of Belgrade, Kaluđerica, its socio-political situation, and the relation with the city itself. The

task was to investigate from a new perspective, blind to the statistics, and thoroughly based on the information

extracted from the location and the inhabitants themselves. The aim was to demistify its socio-political structure by

analising its history, the present moment situation, and the possible future on which impact can be made.

The finished product of the workshow was the comprehensive mind

map consisting of several different research currents, all culminated in

one 1,2 x 1,2 meter panel. The information in it was placed on a six

directions structure, within which segments are both separated and in

close cause - consequence interaction. Any which of these six paths

can be a starting point for reading the map, and all of them provide

information which seeks other sources that can also be found here. In

this booklet, it has been cut horizontally in four pieces so it can be read

more easily, but a full resolution image is on the workshop website.
