Civil engineers work on projects that touch nearly all facets of every day life
the buildings we live and work in the network of transportation, water
and power systems that support modern life and business
and projects we use to sustain and repair the environment that we all share

TRANSPORTATION AND PAVEMENT ENGINEERING
Need to know: - Mathematics- Physics- Mechanics- Statistics and Probability- Computer Programming
Always be concerned about environmental impacts!
![Page 10: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
SUSTAINABILITY AND PRESERVATION CONCEPTS IN
ASPHALT PAVEMENTS https://www.dropbox.com/s/v

![Page 11: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
CONCEPTS OF SUSTAINABILITY FOR ASPHALT PAVEMENTS
Longevity, increase service lifeMinimize long-term environmental
effectsReduced greenhouse emissions (e.g., CO2)
Reduced use of raw materialsRecycled asphalt pavements
Increased use of recycled materialsIncreased use of industrial by-products
Crumb (tire) rubber modified asphalt
![Page 12: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
THE PREMISE: REDUCE THE IMPACT AT THE PRODUCTION
LEVELLess energy used during production
= Less impact on the environment
![Page 13: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
RECYCLING EXISTING ASPHALT PAVEMENTS
Every year, about 100 million tons of pavement material is reclaimed, and about 95 percent of the total is returned to use in roads and highways.
This makes asphalt pavement America’s most recycled material.
![Page 14: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
CRUMB RUBBER MODIFIED HMA PAVEMENTS
Ground tire rubber + asphalt + aggregates
Asphalt rubber is the largest single market for ground rubber in the United States,
consuming an estimated 220 million pounds, or approximately 12 million tires annually. 14

DESIGN CONSTRAINTS IN PAVEMENT DESIGN
COST TIME MATERIALS
![Page 16: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
TESTING PAVEMENTWhat qualities make pavement “good”?
What do you want to test to see if pavement is “good”?
![Page 17: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
DEFLECTION- How much something changes
when a force (or load) is applied to it
- Goal for engineers: minimize deflection on pavement
![Page 18: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
DEFLECTIONHow do you measure it?
SENSORS!One type of sensor:
Piezoelectric Film Transducer as a Sensor
Wires connected to piezo
![Page 19: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
YOUR ENGINEERING CHALLENGE
APPLY what you have learned
about sustainability in asphalt
design to DESIGN, BUILD, and
TEST a sample of pavement
![Page 20: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
YOUR ENGINEERING CHALLENGE
1) GOAL: LEAST amount of deflection (measured with piezo and oscilloscope)
2) COST: LEAST amount of cost (you will calculate this)
3) TIME: Must finish production and testing before the end of this session
4) MATERIALS: You can only use what is provided for your group
![Page 21: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
1) Use the JB Weld glue to glue the piezo onto the top layer FIRST (it takes about 10 min to dry)
2) You can mix any supply with any other supply.
3) Make sure to compact their layers
4) Water can be added to any layer, but you do not want it to “float”
5) The Geogrid is generally used after the first layer
YOUR ENGINEERING CHALLENGE: HELPFUL HINTS
![Page 22: Pavement Preservation and Design: An Overview](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/5681638a550346895dd479a5/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
YOUR ENGINEERING CHALLENGE: MEASUREMENTS
How you will measure…DEFLECTION:
- Piezo - Oscilloscope- Applied force (weight) dropped from specific height
COST: - Calculate the amount of money it costs to build your sample using the values on the next slide
