Dear Parents,

Watching the demolition and the construction on campus is very

dramatic and exciting. Last week a crane was added to the construction

site--seeing this towering machinery silently and smoothly carry slabs into

place is amazing.

There’s another major project taking place on campus. Although not

as obvious as the construction, I believe it is every bit as exciting and

potentially will make as much or possibly even greater impact on the

education at Seattle Prep as our new building. I am referring to Seattle Prep’s

Technology Plan.

When I came on board as principal, I was asked to develop a three-year

technology plan. Last spring, the Technology Task Force presented this plan

to Kent Hickey. A key question guiding our discussions and decisions has

been, “What role does technology have in the education and formation of

Prep’s students to become men and women for others?”

One important decision that has been made is that Seattle Prep will

become a 1:1 (one to one) environment in which every student will have

his or her own iPad. Now that we have set this direction, the teachers are

spending this year, individually and in departments, learning how the iPad

can enhance student learning within the curriculum they teach.

The administrative team is already integrating iPads into everyday activities as

witnessed in this meeting between Kathy Tullis and Maureen Reid.

continued from page 1

With the dedication of the

new building, I look forward

to celebrating the rollout of

a dynamic integration of

technology in education at

Seattle Prep.

Last May, with the generous support of the Parent Association, every faculty

member received an iPad. During first semester, the faculty are considering

options among Learning Management Systems (e.g. Moodle, Haiku, Canvas),

examining digital resources, (e.g. esources, educational apps) and revising

handbook policies for when students have iPads.

Meanwhile, the Technology Committees is tackling issues of criteria

for selection of digital resources, infrastructure needs and professional

development opportunities.

Various scenarios are being considered for implementation. Do we start

with one or two classes or decide that all four years will use iPads? When

are paperbound books preferable? More detailed information will be

communicated during the course of this year as we answer these questions for

Prep.

What a difference a year makes. The Building our Future campaign was well

underway last year but no decision had been made about when construction of

the new building would begin. One year ago, a Technology Task Force was just

forming.

One year from now, Adelphia Memorial Hall will be Prep’s main classroom

building. With the opening of the new building, iPad technology will be

integrated in many classes. Just as construction will go through many stages

before the building is complete – so too will the technology plan take a more

defined path as we work this year. A key difference is that with technology, the

process will never be completed but will be on-going as technology constantly

changes. With the dedication of the new building, I look forward to celebrating

the roll-out of a dynamic integration of technology in the education at Seattle

Prep.

COUNSELING

The counseling office at Seattle Prep has had a busy start to the school year.

Freshman, sophomore and junior counselors Jolene Boyle (A-G), Jim Johnston

(H-O), and Ron Zipse (P-Z) have been busy helping students to begin the school

year well. As mentors in a Jesuit college preparatory school, they know that

getting prepared for college begins with developing good habits early in high

school. While a strong academic record is key, exploring and developing

interests in and out of the classroom is just as important at this stage of a

student’s high school career. Freshmen and sophomores should continue to

explore athletic teams, clubs, and community service organizations at this

time as they discover their strengths and weaknesses.

The counselors have distributed both a “recipe for success” and a campus

resource list to all freshmen to help them connect with assistance when it is

needed. To succeed academically, a good student must pay close attention at

school and ask for help when needed. Time management is crucial in learning

to balance schoolwork with other interests, and students should work closely

with parents, teachers and counselors to develop these skills and other healthy

personal habits like eating right and getting enough sleep. The counselors are

available to assist students and parents as the need arises. Contact information

is available on the school website under Academics, then Counseling.

NavianceThe Naviance Family Connection is a valuable tool used throughout the

four-year guidance program. Counselors introduced the freshmen to the

Naviance program in a session where students identified their learning styles

and how to best accommodate that style. Sophomores continued to update

their resumes and will soon complete a personality inventory based on the

Myers-Briggs criteria.

College applicationsThe College counselors have also been busy assisting seniors and their

families with the college application process. Most seniors have met with

counselors (Kathy Krueger A-J and Sandra Foy K-Z) and are well into the

application process. Juniors have also received written information about

junior year college-planning and have been invited to attend college visits by

admissions representatives.

COMMUNITY MINISTRY

Pope Francis Calling Church to Participate in the Ministry of Christ

On March 13 the Jesuit Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires was

elected pope. Pope Francis quickly connected the choice of his name to St.

Francis of Assisi and called for a Church for and of the poor. He also appealed

for all Catholics, religious and lay, to adopt a simple lifestyle. As a cardinal

Francis lived alone in an apartment in a working class neighborhood and

rode the bus to work. He demonstrated his commitment to a simple lifestyle

by choosing to live in St. Martha’s House, guest accommodations for visiting

clergy and hotel residence for bishops and priests working at the Vatican,

rather than the papal apartments.

Pope Francis’s direct call for the Church to address the needs of the poor

and become a welcome community is not a recent concern. For many centuries

Catholic institutions have carried out Jesus’ ministry of caring and healing

throughout the world. Fulfilling Christ’s mission has taken place in, along with

parishes and dioceses, in three sets of institutions: health care, education

and social services. All serve Catholic and non-Catholic constituencies.

These ministries embody Christ’s presence and actualize the Catholic social

principles of human dignity, the common good and human rights

Many of these institutions began on the grassroots level, often in primitive

settings by faithful and committed followers of Christ. In addition, hundreds

of Catholic ministries worldwide, not directly under diocesan auspices or

affiliated formally with the Church, serve those in need. Dorothy Day and

those who have followed her in the Catholic Worker Movement embody St.

Francis of Assisi’s spirit of poverty, peacemaking and reaching out to strangers

with their hospitality houses throughout the United State.

Volunteers in parishes engage in long term programs to people hurting as

well as immediate relief to struggling families. Catholic Community Services is

second only to Washington State’s Department of Health and Human Services

in providing support and assistance to people in this state. These services

include low income housing, transitional housing, tutoring, long term care,

food programs, drop-in centers, emergency services and political advocacy.

Programs are enabled by the financial generosity of committed Catholics,

caring others and supportive foundations.

Addressing the problem of poverty and severe hardship is not a recent

institutional concern. Vatican II’s 1965 Pastoral Constitution on the Church in

the Modern World stated, “In our times a special obligation binds us to make

ourselves the neighbor of absolutely every person, and of actively helping him

when he comes across our path, whether he be an old person abandoned by all,

a foreign laborer unjustly looked down upon, a refugee, …or a hungry person

who disturbs our conscience by recalling the voice of the Lord: “As long as you

did it for one of these, the least of my brethren, you did it for me (Mt: 25:40).

Pope Francis is reminding people that discipleship, being a follower of Jesus,

is striving to live the Gospel of peace, justice, compassion and love. Regardless

of our circumstances and life situation we all have daily opportunities to share

in the ministry of Christ.

– Bill Fellows

Service trips are an important part of

Prep’s commitment to serving the poor.

Standardized testing october 16th

Freshmen, sophomores and juniors will have standardized testing

on Wednesday, October 16th: the Explore for freshmen, the PLAN for

sophomores and the PSAT/NMSQT for juniors. Students should bring several

#2 lead pencils with erasers, their calculator and their student ID number.

They also need to know their street address and how to write it, that is, where

the address has spaces. That may sound silly but we found last year that in

this age of electronic communication there were students who either did not

know their address or who thought it was written with no spaces the way an

email address would be! Your help making sure your student knows his/her

street address and how to write it would make testing go more smoothly for

everyone. There is no school for seniors on October 16th.

Juniors

October is the time for Prep juniors to begin thinking about whether to

stay at Prep senior year or commence to the Matteo Ricci College at Seattle

University. Juniors attended a presentation on September 18th and will have

the opportunity to spend a day visiting Seattle University this fall. For more

information about Seattle University’s Matteo Ricci College, please visit their

web site at http://www.seattleu.edu/mrc/.

Seniors

May 27th sounds like a long way away but October is just around the corner

and October is the time to order caps and gowns, graduation announcements,

class rings and other merchandise. A representative from National Achiever

Services, the company that provides our graduation merchandise, will be on

campus to meet with the seniors on September 30th. Please ask your senior to

show you the catalog and order form! National Achiever Services will return

Thursday and Friday, October 10th and 11th during lunch to take orders and

answer questions. For more information or to order online, please visit the

National Achiever’s web site at www.nationalachiever.com. To keep up with

all graduation 2014 information and deadlines, visit the graduation web page

at http://www.seaprep.org/Graduation.

through the tenth of the each month with a few exceptions around final

exam time. You should have a received an email a few weeks ago with your

also the person to contact if you lose your user ID or password.

Parent/Student Handbook

What do I do if my student will

miss school to attend a family

event? My student’s cousin is

visiting; can he/she attend Prep

for a day? What is the exact

percentage cut-off between “B+” and

“A-“? Can my son/daughter wear

that to school? Answers to these

questions and more can be found

in the Student-Parent Handbook!

Students all received a copy of the

Parent/Student Handbook as part

of their planner booklet. Parents

may download it from the school

website, www.seaprep.org, under

the Student Life link. It is a great

resource to answer your questions

about Prep policies and procedures.

Boys Cross Country enters the 2013 season as a senior dominated team,

returning four of the top five scoring harriers, including the state 3A individual

champion. Nathan Hale is the prohibitive Metro and Sea-King District favorite

while Prep will strive to reach the state podium (top four teams) for the 15th

time in the last 16 years. A large and fun group of freshmen and sophomores

will work hard to continue Prep’s tradition of Cross Country excellence in the

future.

This may be the first year the Prep Golfers could be league champions in both

teams. Eight girls and seven boys return from last year’s Varsity team including

last year’s Metro League boys champion. The boys’ team sent four golfers to the

state tournament (finishing in 7th place) and the girls’ team had two entrants.

The team retreat weekend at Suncadia will be a highlight this fall.

Seattle Prep Football returns two All-Metro defensive backs and a number

of starters who are aiming for their 5th straight state playoff berth. With an

expanded offensive concept, the Panthers will up the pace and have the ability

to attack zones all over the field. A strong mix of seniors and juniors lead

the offensive and defensive teams. Only one starter returns to the offensive

line but the unit has made great strides under new

line coach and University of Oregon Hall of Fame

center Chip Daly. Defensive Coordinator Clay Packard

brings back the successful 3-5 defense that Prep has

featured for six seasons and plans to keep the players

flying around. Coach Dan DeLong’s linebackers are

impressive with their speed and determination and set

the tone for the team.

The Seattle Prep Volleyball team opened up their

season with wins over Eastlake and Woodinville. Five

experienced returning letter winners and two all-

league picks look forward to defending their Metro

League title as they begin league play. The Seattle

Times state pre-season polls ranks the Panthers at the

number seven spot.

The 2013 Girls’ Soccer season opens with promise

and hope for the team. A pre-season favorite to not

only compete for the Metro championship, but the state title as well, the team

looks forward to the challenge of living up to high expectations. Though off

to a somewhat slow start in a difficult non-league schedule, the players are

beginning to form a chemistry and understanding of one another that should

yield results once the games grow in importance. Come out and support the

team as it gives its “full 80.”

The Prep Girls Cross Country team begins the 2013 season with nearly 60

eager runners. They return a good mix of veteran runners and athletic juniors
