Principal - Don Jacobs . . . Where does the summer go? Like most of you, I cannot believe that it is time to start gearing up for the 2013-14 school year. It has been a quick break, but the time is coming. It is always amazing to me how everyone just starts getting ready to go again. In our house, we have decided that we live by the seasons, not by Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer, but by Fall activities, Winter activities, and Spring activities.

I want to take this time to welcome two new Faculty members to Pawnee City Schools. One of our new teachers is a familiar face to many of you, Taylor Baumert. Taylor will be teaching Social Studies and coaching JH Sports, as well as Football and Girls Basketball. The other new face will be, Christina Hilger. Christina will be teaching Art and helping with the Speech Team. We are excited to have Taylor and Christina join our great team of educators and I hope you all will greet them as warmly as you have me. There has also been a change in teaching assignments in the elementary with Ms. Neels now teaching 4th grade, and Mrs. Niss will be the Title I Director, Reading Coach, and Assessment Coordinator. There have been a few room changes in the elementary as well. So, do not be alarmed if you go to a room and expect to see a certain person and they have been moved.

I am excited for the start of another great school year. The maintenance crews have been doing a great job of getting the buildings ready to go again and they look great. Our school day will remain the same as it was last year. Classes will begin at 8:10 a.m. and end at 3:40 p.m. As a reminder, every Friday we dismiss at 2:00 p.m. for staff development time.

A FEW REMINDERS: Open House will be on Tuesday, August 13th beginning at 7:30 p.m. The “Boot Camp” for computer checkout will be held August 13th, at 6:00 p.m. Seventh grade orientation will also be on Tuesday the 13th at 7:30 p.m.

I HOPE YOU ALL ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO AN OUTSTANDING YEAR!!

Band Notes - Mrs. Veleba

The summer of 2013 is drawing to a close. What this means to me is that my summer band lessons will soon be ending. I was pleased with how lessons went. It really gives me something to look forward to this year! If you didn’t get signed up, but still want to be in band, it’s NEVER too late to join. Just give me a call!By the time you read this newsletter, the Pawnee City High School Marching Band will have already performed at the Pawnee County Fair in July. Future parades include:

• Johnson County Fair Parade on Sunday, August 18th • Richardson County Fair Parade on Thursday, September 12th

I am hoping that by letting you know these dates this early on, you will be able to plan around them when scheduling trips, vacations, family reunions, etc. We’re starting something new this marching season! Well, not completely new. We’re bringing flags back to the marching band. If the girls are interested and if they stick with it, we might even ask more girls to join and have them perform at halftime of football and basketball games. Come on out and show the girls your support at the parades listed above!High School Band is now up over 50 members strong this year!! I can’t wait for everyone to hear them!Want to keep on top of music events? Do you have a Facebook account? Search for “Mrs. Veleba – Music Education Location” and like my page. You can get all of the announcements, so you know what’s going on each week. I’d even like to post pictures and recordings of performances, just in case you can’t attend. As always, the band will be coming around asking you to renew your magazine subscriptions at the end of August. This is a major fundraiser for the band, as we are raising money for our trip to Chicago this spring. Please take this time to look around the house and find the magazines you will want to renew. Filling out the form is so much easier when we can get your information off of a current magazine.

Technology BootcampFor all Parents/Guardians of students in grades 7th-12th

August 13th, 20136:00-7:30 p.m.

Meet in the High SchoolTechnology is ever changing, the Technology Bootcamp is a great opportunity for the staff at Pawnee City School to communicate with parents about how technology can be used to enhance your childʼs education and how you can communicate better with your childʼs teachers. Computer use requires responsibility; responsibility for the computer itself and responsibility for the acceptable use of this computer. It is critical for the success of this project that everyone involved (students, parents, and staff) become knowledgeable about the 1 to 1 initiative. Therefore, we have set up a training “bootcamp” to give parents an opportunity to learn about issues with using the Internet safely, both at home and at school and to review the Acceptable Use Guidelines. The 1 to 1 program is only available to students grades 9th through 12th, but with increased computer usage at the junior high level, we feel it is important to inform and educate all the parents, as the same acceptable user guidelines will be enforced. Students will attend a similar bootcamp on the first day of school.Reminder: A parent/guardian must attend before your student will receive a computer. If a parent/guardian attended in the spring, they will not need to attend this bootcamp session. The computer usage fee is $35.00 for the year. Please contact Mary Moser if you have any questions.

Make sure to send all of your saved labels and boxtops with your students when they return back to school! We will

draw four lucky winners each month from the elementary and one winner from the high school. There will now be a

collection box located in the high school office.

Points are used to purchase play equipment and other supplies that we would not have otherwise. You can make a

difference, just clip, save, and turn in your Campbell's Labels, Boxtops, & Best Choice Labels! Save all year round and

watch them add up! You can also log on to www.boxtops4education.com, to earn eboxtops for our school.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO HAVE YOUR CHILD PUT HIS/HER NAME ON THE BACK OF THEIR BOXTOPS!
