Dear Friends,

The increasing magnitude of what we can accomplish together never ceases to amaze me. Last year, PAWS topped our prior year’s intake numbers once again— by over 10 percent—accepting more than 7,600 cats, dogs and wild animals through our doors.

As we gear up for another busy spring season, known as “baby season” here at PAWS, we can’t help but dream of the day when our facilities will match the caliber of our work. Like a baby bird who has outgrown her nest, PAWS has simply matured beyond the utility of our current campus. Thankfully, our vision of a new facility is taking flight.

As I shared with you last summer, PAWS purchased 25 acres of land on which a world-class companion animal shelter, wildlife hospital and education center will be built. Now, we are working with our architects to design the facilities for maximum efficiency and impact—both for the benefit of animals in our care as well as the community members of all ages we hope to educate there. I promise to keep you updated as this fledgling project continues to develop.

PAWS would never be able to accomplish what we do already, let alone dream so big, without the volunteers, donors and advocates who support our work so passionately. PAWS’ Board of Directors recently elected new officers to guide us through this exciting portion of our history, including President Nancy Pasternack of Amazon, Vice President and community volunteer Leslie Chandler, Treasurer and retired healthcare management executive Janet Straus, and Secretary Mary Renouf of Providence Health and Services. To you and the multitude of extraordinary individuals who are helping us realize a brighter future for animals, thank you!

California Cats RescuedWhen the call came in for help rescuing nine unwanted cats from California, PAWS answered. Flown to Sea-Tac in early February, the cats were welcomed by PAWS’ staff and volunteers with open arms and hearts. In the end, each one of these lucky felines found their forever homes thanks to PAWS’ community of supporters!

The Bear BrothersLast year PAWS received two Black Bear brothers (above) who were found motherless in Eastern Washington. With autumn approaching, wildlife officers felt it best that they over-winter at PAWS. These two orphaned cubs were the ideal roommates for another young, male Black Bear cub already in our care. Together, all three have grown up healthy, and as spring approaches, we’re making preparations for their release back to the wild.

PAWS Testifies at the CapitolOn January 29, activists Bonnie Anderson, Diane Weinstein and Barb Justice joined Amy Webster, PAWS Community Education Coordinator, and Dr. John Huckabee, PAWS Wildlife Veterinarian, in Olympia for a hearing on Senate Bill 5356, which would stem the negative effects of derelict fishing line on wildlife. Thanks in part to Dr. Huckabee’s persuasive testimony, the bill moved up to the Ways and Means Committee. On February 3, PAWS Companion Animal Services Director Kay Joubert (pictured above right) joined the panel testifying in support of strengthening the animal anti-cruelty Senate Bill 5501. Catio Tours Coming!We’re joining one of Seattle’s newest trends—Catios! To keep cats safe while protecting local birds and small mammals, cat guardians across the nation are building outdoor cat enclosures called catios. On Saturday, May 16, from 1–4 p.m., join PAWS for our first ever Seattle Catio Tour. See paws.org for more details.

There’s a little known secret about Seattle that only area

residents know. Our urban parks are gorgeous. As we bask in the natural beauty of our surroundings, it’s not uncommon to see our wildlife neigh-bors going about their daily business. That’s because our jogging path is their front yard, and together we must share the landscape in harmony with each other’s needs.

Every year, PAWS cares for as many as 3,000 wild animals. Once ready, and when it’s safe to do so, each of our wild patients returns to the natural setting from where they were found. In many cases, that means an urban park near you.

Last year alone, PAWS rehabilitated seven Varied Thrushes, 33 Dark-eyed Juncos, 40 American Robins, 11 House Finches, and seven Cedar Waxwings, all songbirds native to our state. For the Anna’s Hummingbirds who nest here year round, we rehabilitated eight in need of care. For the migratory Rufous Hummingbird, we helped three when they came through Washington State and were found in need of veter-inary aid.

If your favorite park includes a body of water, you’ve likely observed many

waterfowl as they fill their days and nights with the tireless home upkeep they must perform. In 2014, PAWS cared for 166 Mallards who were either injured or too young to survive on their own. With your support, we also rehabilitated and released two Western Screech Owls, four Northern Saw-whet Owls, six Barred Owls, and five Cooper’s Hawks.

While you’ve undoubtedly seen many a squirrel, there are some small mammals you’ve probably never encountered. PAWS returned four rehabilitated Northern Flying Squirrels to their urban park homes last year, but you won’t see them. This secretive species only comes out at night, and rarely in the presence of humans. We also helped one Townsend’s Chipmunk and four Douglas Squirrels return to their homes last year, both species who you’ll likely glimpse in the park.

So next time you lace up your running shoes for a little urban park workout, remember to give some space to our wildlife neighbors. Each in their own way helps to keep our urban environments natural—and who knows—they might have once been a patient at PAWS!

Thousands of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals are brought to PAWS each year by caring people. When these animals are healthy and well again, they are released back to their natural habitat—often from where they were found—which could be a local park near you.

PAWS’ Puppy-palooza!Our year began with an abundance of puppies in need,

and our community opened their hearts to help.

Saving Lives Together

Twenty puppies were transferred in from partner shelters, prompting a call out to our community for help. Eager neighbors flocked to PAWS in record numbers to fill the immediate need for foster families. Welcome aboard new foster families!

In January, PAWS helped six puppies found in deplorable conditions in California. The eight-week-old littermates were near starvation when they were rescued and trans-ferred to us. Asked to help give each a second chance, PAWS leapt to the challenge. Our staff and volunteers immediately made up for overdue TLC with cuddles and needed care.

Five rescued pups arrived at Sea-Tac Airport as part of a new partnership with Georgia Peaches Puppy Rescue. These little ones have been through quite a journey. We’re pleased we can help these adorable lovebugs find forever homes.
