Positive. Attitude. Work Ethic. Success

Discovery Lab School

Greetings Discovery Lab Community,

The Discovery Lab community is committed to educational excellence!

Recently the PBIS team has attended trainings addressing school climate. Our district is

committed to PBIS( Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports.)

A few foundation stones of an excellent learning environment consist of; clear

expectations, mutual respect and compassion. These characteristics support a thriving

learning environment. In order to promote respect and compassion it is essential that we

teach and model these concepts and have common clear expectations for all.

We will continue to teach common expectations using an element of our mascot, Cougar

PAWS.

PAWS

P. The P stands for a Positive Learning Environment. Where students and staff arrive

each day, ready to learn, and support each other to achieve the learning objectives that are

stated in each classroom. The expectation is that each person be supportive and ready to

learn….this may look different for each grade level or each class but the common

expectation can be seen everywhere at the school.

A. The A is for Attitude. Our attitude about being here is reflected in everything we do

and say. We sometimes have to check our attitude and adjust our sights to have a positive

and respectful attitude. “I can do hard things” is the mindset we want to foster.

W. The W is for Work Ethic. Be responsible. A high work standard says “I will take

care of our work environment in every way possible”, from the desk I sit at, to the lunch

room and the school campus. You will see our work ethic reflected in the things we

produce. We will do our best.

S. The S is for Success. My efforts create quality work and a safe learning environment.

I create success for myself, my classmates and my teachers by doing my best everyday

and in everyway! I am a team learner! I am a successful learner!

“PBIS” is short for Positive Behavioral Intervention and

Supports. This language comes directly from the 1997

reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities

Education Act (IDEA).

PBIS is used interchangeably with SWPBS, which is short

for “School-wide Positive Behavior Supports.”

PBIS is based on principles of applied behavior analysis

and the prevention approach and values of positive

behavior support.

• PBIS makes decisions from data that impacts our school.

• PBIS is about creating safer and more effective schools. Growth Mindset. Paradigm shift.

• PBIS is about teaching and supporting positive behavior for all students.

• PBIS takes 3 – 5 years to implement at all levels, with on going support.

• PBIS is a SCHOOL-WIDE design for discipline.

• PBIS is team-based systematic planning.

• PBIS is for (and by) ALL students, ALL staff, and in ALL

settings with parent/family support and input.

• PBIS provides a clear structure for a positive school climate.

• PBIS is a living part of our school and evolves with us based

on data and need.
