Why Caregiving Can Be DangerousLooking After Loved Ones Linked To Health Risks

The more than 6 million Californians whoprovide care to loved ones with disabilities orserious illnesses are at greater risk than the restof the population of developing signicant

health problems of their own, according to anew study by UCLA researchers.The typical caregiver tends to be well off:

they are usually a middle-aged white femalewho is employed, lives inan urban or suburban areaand has a householdincome of at least300% of the FederalPoverty Level, whichwould be more than$66,000 a year for afamily of four.

However, these

caregivers areperforming anenormously time-consuming task. Theamount of time perweek devoted to providingcare ranges from 19.1 hours amongcaregivers between the ages of 18 and 44,rising to more than 32 hours per week forthose 65 and older, presumably because theparents and spouses they are caring for areolder and require more complex care. Nearly20% are also spending $250 a month or moreon providing care.

As a result, all caregivers reported that thestress of accomplishing this task interferedwith their social lives and performinghousehold chores. Nearly 30% of caregivers

said their ability to perform household tasksdue to emotional pressures was severe,compared to 23.4% of the general population.

A third of caregivers also said thatemotional distress severelyimpaired their social lives,compared to 26.4% of thepopulation in general.

Caregivers need help,especially as babyboomers age and placeeven greater strains ontheir and their families'abilities to cope," said

which was published by theuniversitys Center for Health Policy
