    VOL. 3 JUNE 11-12, 2011 ISSUEWelcome to

Catholic Church at Fort Gordon, G

Q: What was the secret that the Blessed Virgin Mary gave to Lucy at Fatima? ?

A: Sister Lucy, a cloistered Carmelite nun, wrote the third part of her apparitions in 1944 and gave them in asealed envelope to the bishop of Leira, the Portuguese diocese where Fatima is located. The message was to be

opened in 1960 or after her deathwhichever came first. Before the bishop died in 1957, the envelope wasgiven to the Sacred Congregation for the Holy Office (since 1965 known as the Congregation for the Doctrine of

the Faith). Pope John XXIII opened it in 1960 and showed it to one person, Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani, head ofthat congregation. The letter was resealed, and has not been read again. Cardinal Ottaviani later said that all thestories circulating about the contents of the letter were fantasies. Whatever the contents are, they cannot be cen-

tral to our faith because they are a private revelation, no matter how widely they are publicized. It is surely better

to use the Scriptures, the tradition and teachings of the Church, the sacraments and the good example offered bythe saints over the centuries as guides to our decisions. Unfortunately, Christians can become so interested insomething like the Fatima secret that they neglect Gods public revelation given through the Scriptures. If youkeep close to the Scriptures and the sacraments, you will not go wrong.Retrieved from http://www.americancatholic.org/

    Scripture

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4)

When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. (Psalm 104:30)

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, andwe were all given to drink of one Spirit. (1 Cor 12:13)

Jesus stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." (John 20:19)

he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (John 20:22)

    Reflection

Is there anything that you do to cause you to be filled with the Holy Spirit?

Does everyone receive the same Spirit?

What happens when you receive the Spirit?

How do you live in the Spirit in your family and in your parish community?

The problem of forming Christ in us is not to be solved by our own efforts. It is not a matter of studying the

Gospels and then working to put our ideas into practice, although we should try and do that too, but alwaysunder the guidance of grace, in complete subjection to the Holy Spirit..

For if we depend on our own ideas, our own judgment and our own efforts to reproduce the life of Christ,we will only act out some pious charade which will ultimately scare everybody we meet because it will be sostiff and artificial and so dead.

It is the Spirit of God that must teach us Who Christ is and form Christ in us and transform us into otherChrists.

Next week, we will celebrate the Trinity Sunday. "The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith and of Christ

life. God alone can make it known to us by revealing Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

"The Incarnation of God's Son reveals that God is the eternal Father and that the Son is consubstantial with the Fa-

ther, which means that, in the Father and with the Father, the Son is one and the same God.

"The mission of the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father in the name of the Son (John 14:26) and by the Son: from theFather (John 15:26), reveals that, with them, the Spirit is one and the same God. "With the Father and the Son He is

    worshipped and glorified" (Nicene Creed).

"Inseparable in what they are, the Divine Persons are also inseparable in what they do. But within the single divineoperation each shows forth what is proper to Him in the Trinity, especially in the divine missions of the Son's Incar-

nation and the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Bible study on the book of 2 CorinthiansThe book of 2 Corinthians was a letter written by the Apostle Paul during the first-century church. Hewrote this second letter to the believers in Corinth to not only reinforce what he had written in his first

etter, but also to also offer additional instruction so that they could maintain a healthy spiritual bal-ance. But the overall purpose of this letter was to comfort them after Paul's initial scathing rebukes. Itwas not his desire to isolate them as if they were non-reconcilable, but to correct their way of thinkingbefore apostasy overcame the church.

As a result of his first letter, as recorded in 1 Corinthians, many of those who had wandered awayfrom the truth had come back to the foundations of their faith. But there still remained a rebelliousminority who opposed Paul's authority. This minority continued to cause ripples of division amongthose who continued to remain faithful to Paul, and faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

It was apparent that, just as in the book of First Corinthians, many of the practices of the Corinthianculture continued to be a temptation to them. According to reports given to Paul by Timothy, his disci-

ple and son in Christ, and Chloe, a member of the Corinthian church, many of the believers had leftbehind much of their faith to seek after the affluence and intellectual philosophies that the Corinthianculture offered. This caused divisions in the church and opened the door to sinful practices. The overall

problem included an offender within the church who became entangled in fornication with his father'swife. It came to Paul's attention that not only was the church aware of the offender's actions, but theycondoned it by not confronting such wicked conduct. But as a result of his first letter, it appeared as if

his reprimands had re-awakened them to the spiritual truths that they had abandoned. The Corinthianchurch took disciplinary action against the offender, and therefore regained their spiritual purity.

Unfortunately, from Paul's perspective, their discipline may have been too severe, for he was con-cerned that if they were to shun the offender for much longer, he would be overtaken by sorrow. Paul

was providing the Corinthian church an example of Godly restoration when it comes to church disci-pline. Just as he had reassured them of his love and concern after rebuking them for their behavior, they, too, were to reassure the offender of their forgiveness and love so that he could be restored backnto fellowship with them.

There were some who opposed Paul's teachings, claiming that his letters were powerful, but that heacked public speaking skills. The Corinthians prided themselves in their ability to use eloquent speech

to influence or persuade others to follow their lead. While it worked for many, Paul successfully de-fended his authority by responding to their jabs and sneers with plain spiritual truth and the Word of

God. He confirmed that he had been appointed as an apostle by Jesus Christ Himself and that his con-duct as such, while absent and present, was physical evidence enough of his authority among believers.

In his second letter to the Corinthians, Paul revealed his love for them, his desire to bring glory tothe name of God alone, and his unwavering faithfulness to the truth of the gospel, regardless of opposi-tion.
