What is prescribed burning? Prescribed burning (Rx Fire) is the application of fire to a specific land area under selected weather and fuel con- ditions to accomplish predetermined land management objectives. A prescribed fire always includes a written plan that will meet the objectives of the burn and, as much as possible, assure that the burn will remain in the planned area. ese objectives include reducing hazardous fuel loads, which can lead to destructive wildfires, improving agricultural production and wild- life habitat, restoring the ecological integrity to range- lands and forestlands, and maintaining native grasses on prairie lands as well as reducing the fuel available for wildfires. Prescribed fires differ from wildfires. Wildfires are not planned and are typically destructive. Destructive wildfires are usually wind-driven fires that cannot be contained until the weather conditions change. Prescribed fires, on the other hand, are planned, con- trolled and constructive or beneficial in maintaining many fire-dependent landscapes. Prescribed fires can also “fire proof ” landscapes prone to wildfires through reducing unwanted dead vegetation and stimulating new grass growth. Practicing prescribed burning is practicing good land stewardship. Prescribed Burn Alliance of TexasThe Prescribed Burn Alliance of Texas mission is to support member prescribed burning associations in promoting and protecting the right of Texas landown-ers to use prescribed burning as a safe, economical, and effective management practice.

The Prescribed Burn Alliance of Texas, incorporated statewide, is an organization of 11 Prescribed Burn Associations (PBAs). Jointly, they promote the safe ap-plication of prescribed burning as a land management tool.

A PBA is a regional neighbor-helping-neighbor organization to apply prescribed fire to a landscape. Each PBA is owned and operated by private landowners and other volunteers. The Alliance works through member PBAs to foster

the acceptance and use of prescribed burning in Texas by working with county governments, federal and state agencies, and natural resource organizations. The Alliance promotes continuing education and training programs for the PBAs and the public.

What is prescribed burning?Prescribed burning (Rx Fire) is the application of fire to a specific land area under selected weather and fuel con-ditions to accomplish predetermined land management objectives. A prescribed fire always includes a written plan that will meet the objectives of the burn and, as much as possible, assure that the burn will remain in the planned area. These objectives include reducing hazardous fuel loads, which can lead to destructive wildfires, improving agricultural production and wild-life habitat, restoring the ecological integrity to range-lands and forestlands, and maintaining native grasses on prairie lands as well as reducing the fuel available for wildfires.

Prescribed fires differ from wildfires. Wildfires are not planned and are typically destructive. Destructive wildfires are usually wind-driven fires that cannot be contained until the weather conditions change.

Prescribed fires, on the other hand, are planned, con-trolled and constructive or beneficial in maintaining many fire-dependent landscapes. Prescribed fires can also “fire proof” landscapes prone to wildfires through reducing unwanted dead vegetation and stimulating new grass growth.

Practicing prescribed burning is practicing good land stewardship.
