Crash Typing• Traditional crash data provide where, when

and whom facts about ped and bike crashes

• Lacks information on the sequence of events/causes leading up to crash – important in selecting countermeasures

• Crash typing fills this gap – initially developed by NHTSA in the 1970’s for

peds and bikes

PBCAT Version 1.0

• Development Goals– Create an automated tool for quickly and easily

typing ped and bike crashes– Update/refine the definitions of the 1970’s – Provide links between crash types and potential

countermeasures– Provide limited report capability

• Released in 1999

PBCAT Distribution

Widely distributed - more than 600 software orders from all 50 states and 28 countries

• Projects in three municipalities– Miami-Dade– Las Vegas– San Francisco
