Message froM Board President scott Johnson

Dear Palm Beach Day Academy Community Members,

As you read this Annual Report, we hope that you’ll agree that the 2015-2016 School Year was one filled with accomplishments. Our future is bright because we are planning even greater enhancements in the future. A few highlights of the year include:

• The integration of education and technology has been enhanced this year with the addition of support infrastructure to support the 6th through 9th Grade BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program.

• Speech and Debate Club was added this year and beginning with the first competitive meet of the seasons, our students consistently earned awards in multiple categories. This is a testament to our public speaking emphasis beginning with our smallest students and continuing through 9th Grade.

• Barbara Close was selected as the William T. Dwyer Excellence in Education middle school teacher of the year for Palm Beach County.• We were awarded the designation as a Green School of Excellence for the 7th consecutive year • PBDA Community Service in collaboration with the Palm Beach/Flagler Rotary Club continued to give Service Above Self awards to

our students who have worked beyond the average number of hours to the extraordinary in community outreach. • Our Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball Teams each won their league championships. The boy’s team was undefeated all season.• PBDA’s 6th – 8th Grade Science students participated in the Science Olympiad at FAU in Boca Raton in February. The team came

home with two 3rd Place trophies and one 1st Place trophy after the day-long competition with other Palm Beach County schools.

In May, a special evening celebration of donors included the announcement of plans to begin work on the Lower Campus Education Center. A ceremonial groundbreaking on the Lower Campus later that month officially initiated the building process. At the close of school in June, the Unity Church building and the Administrative Building were demolished and site preparation work continued over the summer to set the stage for construction.

We want to take this opportunity to thank the many families that have contributed to our new Education Center. Not only have you been generous with gifts to the building project, but you have also inspired others with your incredible enthusiasm and willing support on behalf of all the children who will benefit from these new facilities. We focus on providing our students with the very best possible preparation for the future and on giving them a school experience that they will remember with pride. Our graduating Eighth and Ninth Graders consistently head off to the schools of their choice secure in the knowledge that they have completed a genuinely challenging academic program through their own sustained efforts. They take with them the memory of strong relationships with their teachers who always found the right balance of challenge and support for each child.

We have been fortunate to work with Becky van der Bogert as our Head of School for the past nine years, and we want to thank her for her leadership and service to our school. As we started the search for a new leader for our school, Dr. Edwin P. Gordon stood above all the rest. Edwin was appointed in October, and spent a lot of time getting to know the school and community in the spring, and officially became the Head of Palm Beach Day Academy on July 1, 2016. We are excited about the future!

I am proud to be the President of the Board of Trustees of Palm Beach Day Academy and to be a part of this excellent community of parents, teachers, trustees and students.

Sincerely,

Scott A. Johnson ‘79 President, Board of Trustees

Palm Beach Day acaDemy Revenue

Your gifts to our school support the people and programs that make Palm Beach Day Academy so special. That includes talented teachers, rigorous academic programs, visual and performing arts, athletic teams,

professional development and the maintenance of our existing facilities and grounds. Philanthropic gifts also provide financial assistance to qualified students.

While your child is at Palm Beach Day Academy, your support translates into more personal attention, increased intellectual stimulation, leadership skills, and critical thinking skills. In the future, it will mean greater credibility behind the solid academic foundation your child will carry throughout life.

Palm Beach Day Academy is a strong family of parents and educators that work together for the benefit of each child. We definitely are better because our parents work with us as volunteers to further our mission another 95 years into the future.

Annual FundUnder the leadership of Stephanie Carden and Lourdes Fanjul, contributions were received from trustees, current parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, foundations, administrators, teachers, staff and friends. We were proud to announce that 93% of our parents supported the Annual Fund and 100% of our faculty, staff and administrators contributed to the operating expenses of the school..

Fundraising EventsThe 20th Annual Walter H. Butler Golf Classic, chaired by Matthew Smith and Steve Smith, raised $60,613 net of expenses. Major Sponsors included Shoes For Crews, Austin and Steve Smith, the Stan and Arna Smith Foundation, the Hallowell Family, Sterling Organization, SCS Financial, The Atwood Group - Merrill Lynch, and the Tampa Bay Rays. Golf participants included parents, students, trustees, faculty, and community partners.

The 2016 Feather Ball, featuring Rachel Platten, presented by First Republic Bank, was chaired by Andrea Kosoy and Nicole Munder. The event netted $531,000, of which $120,500 was raised by Corporate Sponsorship Chairwoman Caroline Forrest and the Corporate Sponsorship Committee.

Auxiliary ProgramsAuxiliary programs include fees for services such as the lunch and bus programs, as well as for the school enrichment, aftercare, book fair, and field trips.

As we plan for the coming months and into the future, we must rely on financial stability, good financial management, a strong enrollment, a dedicated Board of Trustees and a high level of financial giving on the part of all Palm Beach Day Academy Families.

We sincerely thank all who have supported our school through gifts, time and thoughtful creative input.
