Teaching/Learning Examples (TLE’s)

• TLE’s are a way to document and share your data

• TLE’s have several possible functions:– Strengthening skills of coach(es) – Increasing skills of team members and

Astumbo Elementary School in GUSD began implementing PBIS in 2011-2012 school year, achieving fidelity at Tier 1 with a School-wide Evaluation Tool (SET) score of 71%, Self Assessment Survey (SAS) of 65%, and Team Implementation Checklist (TIC) score of 70%. Implementing with fidelity impacted student outcomes, with 86% of students having 0-1 office discipline referrals (ODRs) for the year. The school team continued to refine their Tier 1 systems and in 2012-2013 raised their SET score to 87%, Self Assessment Survey (SAS) of 80%, Team Implementation Checklist (TIC) score of 95%, and their percentage of students with 0-1 ODRs to 90%. This trend appears to be continuing in 2013-14 with 97% of students having 0-1 ODRs for August through December.

Thoughtful and Reflective Questioning

Page 21: PBIS Coaches Training Day 3. Coaches Training Day 4 Follow-up from Coaches Training Day 3 The Why? Preparing your teams for Tier 1 implementation Coaching

Coaching Skill: Thoughtful and Reflective Questioning

• The success of reflective questioning does not depend on asking “just the right question”

• It relies much more on creating opportunities for respondents to think aloud and construct meaning for themselves

Barnett, B.V., Lee,G.V. (1994, Winter). Using Reflective Questioning To Promote Collaborative Dialogue. Journal of Staff Development, 15(1). 20.

Page 22: PBIS Coaches Training Day 3. Coaches Training Day 4 Follow-up from Coaches Training Day 3 The Why? Preparing your teams for Tier 1 implementation Coaching

Coaching Skill: Thoughtful and Reflective Questioning

Questioning can serve two purposes:▪ Help inform the coach of the team’s

knowledge and intentions▪ Help the team clarify its thinking and

uncover possibilities and solutions

Page 23: PBIS Coaches Training Day 3. Coaches Training Day 4 Follow-up from Coaches Training Day 3 The Why? Preparing your teams for Tier 1 implementation Coaching

Coaching Skill: Thoughtful and Reflective Questioning

Using carefully chosen questions will allow the coach to:•guide teams to be reflective of their practice•support the team’s progress through the planning and improvement process •supports both short‐term and long‐term capacity building goals: •the short‐term goal of helping the team to generate a solution to the issue at hand•the long term goal of helping the team develop the skills and tools to handle similar issues in the future independently
