sink so if you have one that you could donate please contact the school or P&C.

NEXT MEETING AGENDA FOCUS: Vote on Sports Uniform Redesign
Canteen
Things that are happening in the P&C
As you are all aware there is a proposal to update the current sports uniform at HPS. The aim of this proposal is part practicality, to take advantage of new fabric technology ie UV protection, ease of laundering and comfort. But it is also about upgrading, modernizing and ensuring that our uniform reflects the standards of our school and our sporting achievements. You may have noticed that over the past week samples of the proposed sports shirt, shorts and cap have been displayed at the canteen for you all to view. If you haven’t seen the samples, please pop by and have a look. A survey is available for you to give us your feedback. This can be accessed via the school website, www.helensburgh-ps.com, and we would encourage you to please take part. The new uniform will not be compulsory until 2018, except for students representing the school at PSSA, zone or higher levels. We are also working on cool weather options for the sports uniform as well as upgrading and reconciling all the current uniform options….. Watch this space. A vote will be held at the next P & C meeting on Tuesday 8
th
September 2015 at 7pm as to whether the school community would like to proceed with implementing the new sports uniform. Everyone is welcome, please come along and get involved
Finance report
The burning question – how do we decide where to spend the money raised by the P&C? It’s simple, really. Financial members of the P&C are able to vote on purchases. To become a financial member, it cost $1 which is your membership for a year. There are some costs which are necessary and therefore not voted on but are monitored by the P&C. As a P&C, we are required to be a member of the P&C Federation and they have insurance to cover P&C events. We also run the canteen so we need to be able to
purchase all the goods for sale as well as paying the employees of the canteen and stocking the uniform shop.
The school often has a “wish list” and we purchase items from this list. Generally they are big ticket items which are not covered by the government budget or by grants. They tend to be items which benefit a large number of our students. Such as our contribution to the oval, smartboards and home readers. We have allocated funds to the school for sports equipment, maths and literacy resources and library books.
Then comes the fun stuff. Things like the playground equipment. While it may be fun, play is a serious business (but don’t tell the kids that!) Outdoor play encourages the development of physical, emotional and cognitive skills. It helps the children with the development of language, reasoning, problem solving, behaviour management and autonomous thinking. Using their arms, core muscles, imagination and sense of fun helps the kids grow both physically and emotionally.
But it costs lots of money! The infants’ equipment cost almost $30000 and we are looking at around $65000 for the primary equipment. The big kids need a place to climb and play but it needs to challenge them to keep their interest. When we put together the funds we currently have allocated we get to about $50000 depending on grants. This includes money already allocated, walk-a-thon money, Comedy for a Cause profits and grants. So we need to fill the short fall with extra fundraising. Please let us know if there are any fundraisers you think would work well. It’s for our kids
