Finish requirements are less stringent in this class making itless expensive than Class-1 construction. All welds areground, and all surfaces are media treated for a consistentfinish appearance. Surfaces may have slight imperfections, including pits, scratches, and small pockets. Flush end-plate

construction minimizes the possibility of material build-up.Designed for use on conveyors where sanitary requirementsare less stringent, or where product is already packaged.Available in most standard hub styles. Diameters 2" - 12".

Finish requirements are similar to the Class-2 construction, except welds are not ground and end-plates are not flush withthe end of the pulley. All surfaces are media treated for aconsistent finish appearance. Surfaces may have slightimperfections, including pits, scratches, and small pockets.Designed for conveyor applications where sanitary

requirements are not a concern. Ideal for applications thatrequire a corrosion resistant pulley made from stainlesssteel. Class-3 pulleys are the least expensive of thestainless steel pulley offerings from PCI. Available in allstandard hub styles. Diameters 2" - 12".

Lagging

Lagging increases traction. Extends life of pulley and belt in abrasive conditions. PCI can also re-lag your existing pulleys and rollers. PCI provides complete in-house lagging capabilities.

PRO CAL INC. Toll Free 800-323-0966- 38 -

Spiral Wrap Rough TopPCI pulleys are available with spiral wrapped rough top lagging. Stripsof belting are glued and riveted to the pulley core providing traction ondrive pulleys. Economical and easy to replace, spiral wrap lagging doesnot have the same bond strength as vulcanized lagging. This style oflagging is more suited to smaller package handling pulleys, whereconveyor loads are lighter and drive torques are lower. Notrecommended on pulleys over 12" in diameter.

Wing Pulley LaggingReplaceable wing lagging is available for all sizes of heavy duty andmine duty wing pulleys. Wing lagging can help extend belt and pulleylife. PCI can install wing lagging on new pulleys. Re-lagging service isavailable by returning your pulleys to our plant.

Replaceable LaggingVulcanized rubber is bonded to steel backing plates that are formed tothe pulley rim. Pads are held in place by retainers that are welded orbolted to the pulley rim. New pads can be installed on a pulley withoutremoving the pulley from the conveyor. PCI can supply this type oflagging on a new pulley, or install it in our plant on your existing pulleys.

Definitions of Rubber CharacteristicsAbrasion ResistanceA materials ability to withstand physical and mechanical action such as rubbing, scraping, or erosion that tends toprogressively remove material from its surface.

Coefficient of FrictionRatio of the tangental force required to move one surface over another to the total normal force pressing the two surfaces together. A laggingmaterial with a high or excellent coefficient of friction will result in better traction than one with a low or poor coefficient. Rough surfaces willhave a higher coefficient of friction than smooth surfaces of like materials.

DurometerMeasure of rubber hardness.

HysteresisThe measure of heat buildup caused by friction or other mechanical action when the rubber is in motion.

Maximum Service TemperatureMaximum continuous operating temperature ignoring a temperature increase caused by hysteresis.

MillableThe milling of uncured rubber in the production or processing stage before curing of the rubber compound. Generally these processing stepsare required to allow for specific molding, extrusion and curing processes.

ResiliencyAbility to return to original size and shape after deformation.

Tear StrengthMaximum load required to tear apart a prescribed size rubber sample.

Tensile StrengthThe amount of force required to stretch a prescribed sample size to the breaking point.

VulcanizationThe process of permanently changing a rubber compound to a cured state with heat and pressure and the appropriate facilitating chemicalsto initiate this chemical cross-linking process.

Pulley Failure and Shaft DiameterThe most common cause of pulley failure is end disk fatigue, whichin turn is primarily caused by undersized shafting. Therefore, the mostimportant step in selecting a pulley is to determine the proper shaftdiameter. There are two important conditions to consider: shaft deflectionand maximum shaft stress. (Refer to ANSI/CEMA B105. 1-1992,Specifications for Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys.) A shaft that is sizedper ANSI/CEMA B105.1-1992 does not have a maximum free shaftdeflection at the hub of 0.0023 inches per inch or a bending stress greaterthan 8000 psi.

A maximum free shaft deflection at the hub of 0.0023 inches per inchlimits the alternating bending stresses imposed on the end disk by theshaft bending, which could cause it to fatigue and fail. This type of failureis indicated by a crack just outside of the weld that joins the hub to theend disk (see picture at right). A bending stress of 8000 psi limits thepossibility of shaft fatigue due to the alternating bending stresses.

Substituting higher strength steel shafting does not allow the use of asmaller diameter shaft in most pulley applications. Higher strength steeldoes not have a higher modulus of elasticity, the property that controlsdeflection and is independent of the strength. However, if high torsionalloading is present, higher strength shafting may be beneficial.

Loads on a Pulley

The load on a pulley may originate from many sources, some of whichare listed below:

Resultant load caused by belt tension Increases in belt tension beyond design considerations:

• Take-ups that are tightened excessively• Excessive material on the belt• Material build up on the drum

Weight of the pulley Misalignment

Hub SelectionWhen choosing a hub and bushing system, it is important tounderstand the different design features and the effects theyhave on conveyor pulley applications. Consider a designthat minimizes end disk prestressing, grips the shaft firmly, iseasily removed, and is not adversely affected by the bendingmoments on the pulley shaft.

XT® Hubs and BushingsThe XT® Hub and Bushing system was specifically designedfor use in conveyor pulleys with two hubs.

The XT® design has a steep taper angle, 2" taper per foot, which minimizes the end disk deflection or prestressing thatoccurs when bushings are installed. The reduction in enddisk prestressing reduces the likelihood of end disk fatigue.

A steep taper angle will reduce the clamping pressure onthe shaft, but the XT® design compensates by increasing thenumber and size of the bolts used to install the bushing.

The taper angle on the XT® design is self-locking, whichalleviates bolt breakage experienced on bushings with a taperangle greater than 2" taper per foot.

The holes used to install and remove the bushing are spacedequally around the bushing split and keyway. Uponinstallation, this balances the load required at each boltlocation, which provides consistent contact pressure on theshaft. During removal, the equally spaced jack-screwseliminate the chance of bushing breakage. The steep taperangle requires less force to remove the bushing, furtherreducing the chance of bushing breakage (see picture below).

Taper-Lock®

The Taper-Lock® Hub and Bushing system was designedprimarily for use in sprockets and sheaves with one hub andhas been used in conveyor pulleys due to its availability.

The Taper-Lock® design has a taper angle of 8 degrees, or1-11/16" taper per foot, which minimizes end disk deflection. However, of all hub and bushing systems, it has the lowestability to “grip” the shaft.

When a Taper-Lock® bushing is installed, it is flush with theouter surface of the hub providing a clean appearance.

Pulley Face Configurations

Why V-Groove Pulleys?V-groove pulleys are typically specified where the conveyor length to width ratio is less than 3-1, and in other instances wherebelt tracking is difficult. V-grooves are intended to help guide V-section belting, not to assist in driving the belt. Therefore, clearances are incorporated. V-groove dimensions are approximately 1/4" wider and 1/16" deeper than V-belt dimensions.V-grooves are available for all sizes of “FC”, “Stainless Steel” and “MC” Series Pulleys.
