This month Pickleball Canada Organization would like to showcase , Bud& Pierrette Hebner who have earned 1600 tournament points each in 2013

Bud & Pierrette HebnerLittle Current, OntarioIn our youth, we played competitive

badminton in Ontario. We became a coupleand badminton was a large part of our life, playing 5-6 times a week. In the early 1970'swe were mixed champions in NorthernOntario. We married in 1974, had 3 childrenand careers moved us to small NorthernOntario towns where we introduced andcoached badminton in our communities. Itcontinued to be our way of life for ourselvesand our children but over the years, otherfamily commitments and issues drifted usaway from the sport.

We retired in a small community, LittleCurrent, Ontario on the North Shore of LakeHuron, Manitoulin Island (world's largestfresh water island). Neighbours of ours,David and Helen Hall, pickleballambassadors, were attempting to getpickleball started up in our community andinvited us to comeout andplay pickleball . Notknowing what to expect, we had a blast andbecame addicted immediately! With ourbadminton background it was an easytransition and even brought us back to ouryounger days, the only difference is that allthe players are much older. In Little Current, we play indoors in a curlingrink during spring, summer and fall before theice is set for curling. There are manychallenges playing on a curling rink becausethe floor is cement, although cool in thesummer, it is quite cold in the fall as thecommunity ice arena is next to our courts. It isnot unusual to find players actually dressed inwinters coats, vests and gloves at this time.We have 17 club members who are allregistered with the Ontario PickleballAssociation. Some players are competitiveand some are beginners but we are all in it tohave fun, socialize and get some exercisewhile we're at it. Our club has a system oftimed matches and random selection of adifferent partner for every match. Being asmall organization it is a win win situation forall as it gives all players a chance to challengeeach other. Our club welcomes visitors, families and friends. Seeing that we aresituated on the North Channel of Lake Huron,we also have a number of boaters passing

through who join us at times in thesummer. We play 3 times a week for 3hours and of course, we have varioussocials afterwards. We've never had formal coaching. Ourskills are mostly self-taught by watchingvideos, playing better players, practicingvarious drills and experiences learned attournaments. We are always looking toimprove our play any way we can.Living in Northern Ontario makes it achallenge toplay in tournamentsbecausethey are all in Southern Ontario orNorthern US states. Travelling up to 8hours three timespluseachsummer& fallis nothing out of the ordinary for us.In our first Ontario Provincial Tournamentin 2012, we lost every single game weplayed. We learned from that experienceand in our second Ontario ProvincialTournament in 2013, we surprisedourselves and actually won the GOLD inthe under 60 category and in 2014SILVER in the under 65 category.Since our retirement in 2012, we havebecome Snowbirds in Winter Haven

Florida. In searching the internet, we'vefound great places to play in CentralFlorida and have been able to connectwith upcoming tournaments. We live in asmall retirement community with only 1small pickleball/tennis court. Weintroduced the sport at Winter HavenOaks and since then, the park managersallowed us to paint pickleball lines on thetennis court once they realized thatinterest was growing in the park. We willbe working on them to get a second courtpainted up. Ontario friends in the parkthat we intoduced the game to, enjoyedthesport somuch that theybrought it backto their home town of Kingsville, Ontarioand they now have 78 members.Wepromotepickleball asmuchaswecanand belong to the Pickleball Associationof Ontario, Canadian PickleballAssociation, and United States ofAmerica Pickleball AssociationPickleball is a great way of keepinghealthy and active in our retirement andeven better yet, we are having so muchfun at it with socializing and meetingpeople from all over North America.

Merrie LeeI was born and raised in Georgetown, British Guiananow known as Guyana.I have loved sports for as long as I can remember. InHigh School I played Netball, Field Hockey, LawnTennis andTable Tennis. In university I learnt to playBadminton and now I have added Pickleball. My athletic efforts have earned me a few rewards. Ihad the honour of being named Sportswoman of theyear in my Freshman year at university. Starting in2003 to the present I have competed in the Ontarioand Canada Senior Games playing badminton withmuch success including representing Canada at theUS Senior Nationals in Houston.Toronto Canada became home in 1974. Raising myfamily did not leavemuch time for sport. However, astime passed I began playing badminton again. Oneevening whilst playing badminton at a CommunityCentre a fellow player came in and said, ' Merrie, I

have found a new gamewhich you will absolutely love'. We lowered one of the Badminton nets andhe proceeded to teach us the rudiments of the games. That wasmy introduction to Pickleball. ThankYou Dennis Carter. There are not many places in Toronto to play Pickleball in the evening so for the first 2 yearsmy playtime was limited to 1 day a week . As an independent IT consultant I had the privilege of arrangingmy work schedule to accommodate play time. Retirement in 2013 and being able to play during theday opened the door for me to play more often and with the help and support of many wonderfulpeople I have been able to improve my game to where I am today.Pickleball was included in the Ontario Senior Games in the summer of 2010. That was the start ofmore Pickleball tournaments in Toronto and surrounding areas. I try to play in asmany tournamentsas possible for the joy of learning from others. This year I ventured further afield and it was mypleasure to be a part of the Nationals in Abbotsford.I enjoy helping to teach Pickleball and promote the game to anyone who will listen. I have beeninvited into schools to teach students the game, aman ambassador for North York and currently amon the board of Pickleball Canada. I encourage others to play the gamewhether it be for recreationor competition.I hope to continueplayingsport formanyyears to comeandmost importantly, wish to thankmy familyand friends for always supporting me. Submitted by Merrie Lee

At publication time we have just learned that Merrie Lee will be the Tournament Director for the 2015Pickleball Canada National Eastern Open Championship..

Sodium Intake in Canada & How toReduce Sodium IntakeCanadianseatabout3400mgof sodiumeachday. This is more than double the amount weneed! Although sodium is an essentialnutrient, our bodies need only a small amountto be healthy. Too much can lead to a varietyof health conditions, including: high blood pressure (hypertension) Vascular and cardiac cell damage Heart disease and stroke Kidney disease Detrimental effects of calcium and bonemetabolism Severity of asthmaBenefits of ReductionHigh sodium intake has been shown tosignificantly increase the risk of cardio-vascular disease and stroke. Dietary sodium

reduction is an efficient way to reduce therisks. In Canada, it has been estimated that ifthe average sodium intake is decreased by1840mg a day, high blood pressureprevalence would decrease by 30%. Thiswould result in approximately one millionfewer Canadians with high blood pressureandannual cost savingsof $430milliondue tofewer physician visits, laboratory tests andmedication. This reduction would alsoprevent an estimated 23,500 cardiovasculardisease events per year in Canada—adecrease 13% over current numbers, with anadditional $949 million annually in savings. How to Reduce Sodium in your Diet Cook with herbs, spices, fruit juices andvinegars for flavor Remove table salt from the kitchenRead thenutrient labels at thegrocery storeand opt for low-sodium options Avoid canned soups and vegetables, usefresh or frozenAvoidprocessed foods, delimeats andhighsodium condiments When eating out, ask for your food to beprepared with little or no salt. Question: Is it a fault if I amaccidentally hitby the ball or if Icatch the ball if Ithink it's going out ofbounds? It is a fault if the ballin play strikes aplayer or anything

the player is wearing or carrying. There isoneexception to this rule: if the ball strikesthe player's paddle hand below the wrist, the ball is still in play. If the ball strikes aplayer standing out of bounds before afault has occurred, that player loses therally. In doubles, if the serve strikes thereceiver's partner, it is a point for theserving team, providing it is not a let serveor a fault serve. This rule also includesballs that appear to be hit out of bounds:during play, if you catch the ball or try tostop it from heading out of bounds, youlose the rally.
