From the Director of Accreditation: This past December, ACOTE experienced a major change with the departure from AOTA of Heather Stagliano, DHSc, OTR who was serving as the Director of Accreditation. During her tenure at AOTA, Heather worked to improve processes and provide additional resources to academic programs. We are currently in the process of recruiting a new director and in the meantime I will be the Interim Director of Accreditation. At its December 2017 meeting, the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE®) adopted the third draft of the ACOTE Accreditation Standards. Feedback on the draft Standards will determine whether the revised Standards are adopted by ACOTE in August 2018. If adopted at the August 2018 meeting, the Standards would become effective July 1, 2020. The Draft 3 Standards are available on the ACOTE Accreditation section of the AOTA website: Draft III. The Council is currently collecting feedback through an online survey. ACOTE is presently working on developing policies, procedures, and educational resources to assist the transition of OTM programs to the OTD level of education. Page 3 of this newsletter provides a link to a new policy: ACOTE Policy IV.B.4. Transitioning to the Doctoral Level. This policy will guide OTM programs preparing to transition to the OTD level of education and includes a number of transition rules. Please join us in Salt Lake City for 2018 AOTA Annual Conference and Expo. At the December 2017 meeting, ACOTE reviewed the feedback on the draft Standards and revisions provided by the Educational Standards Review Committee (ESRC). The Council felt that there were enough changes to the Standards to merit Draft III of the ACOTE Accreditation Standards for a Doctoral-Degree-Level Educational Program for the Occupational Therapist, Accreditation Standards for a Master’s-Degree-Level Educational Program for the Occupational Therapist, Accreditation Standards for a Baccalaureate-Degree-Level Educational Program for the Occupational Therapy Assistant, and the Accreditation Standards for an Associate-Degree-Level Educational Program for the Occupational Therapy Assistant. These changes will be presented to the Academic Leadership Council (ALC) at their meeting on April 17-18, 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah. On April 19, there will be an Open Hearing at the 2018 AOTA Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. Following the Open Hearing, the ESRC will meet in person at AOTA on May 31-June 1, 2018 to review results of the Call for Comment survey which is currently posted as well as feedback from the ALC and Open Hearing. The draft standards and link to the feedback survey can be found thorough the following link: Draft Standards

INTERPRETIVE CHANGES An interpretation for Standard C.1.14 has been added to clarify that the program must ensure that the fieldwork supervisor meets the requirements of Standard C.1.14 prior to the start of a student’s fieldwork experience. (NOTE THAT THIS INTERPRETATION HAS BEEN UPDATED FROM THAT ORIGINALLY DISSEMINATED IN THIS NEWSLETER). Standard C.1.14. Qualified Level II FW Supervisors: Ensure that the student is supervised by a currently licensed or otherwise regulated occupational therapist / or [for OTA programs] occupational therapy assistant (under the supervision of an occupational therapist) who has a minimum of 1 year full-time (or its equivalent) of practice experience subsequent to initial certification and who is adequately prepared to serve as a fieldwork educator. The supervising therapist may be engaged by the fieldwork site or by the educational program. Added Interpretive Language: VERIFICATION THAT THE FIELDWORK SUPERVISOR MEETS ALL REQUIREMENTS OF STANDARD C.1.14 MUST OCCUR PRIOR TO THE ARRIVAL OF THE STUDENT AT THE FIELDWORK EXPERIENCE. The latest version of the ACOTE Standards and Interpretive Guide can be found here December 2017 Standards Interpretive Guide. Please remember to use the most recent Standards and Interpretive Guide as the interpretations, found in the grayed areas of the document, can and do change. The current document is the December 2017 Interpretive Guide Version.

Multiple questions have arisen regarding the research requirement and capstone project in the doctoral Standards. We are using Glassick’s criteria to provide clarification. See highlighted sections below. (Glassick, C. E. (2000) Boyer’s Expanded Definitions of Scholarship, the Standards for Assessing Scholarship, and the Elusiveness of the Scholarship of Teaching. Academic Medicain, vol 75:9, P877-880)

SCHOLARSHIP: Standard B.6.1:

Critique quantitative and qualitative research in order to analyze and evaluate scholarly activities, which contribute to the development of a body of knowledge. This includes the:

o Level of evidence

o Validity of research studies

o Strength of the methodology

o Relevance to the profession of occupational therapy

Locate, select, analyze, and evaluate scholarly literature to make evidence-based decisions.

Evaluate, design, and implement a scholarly study that aligns with current research priorities and advances knowledge translation, professional practice, service delivery, or professional issues (e.g., Scholarship of Integration, Scholarship of Application, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning).

Clarification: To meet this requirement the student(s) must complete a scholarly study that may be completed as an individual or group. The scholarly project MUST, at a minimum, address the following criteria: Clear Goals: Does the scholar state the basic purpose of his or her work clearly? Does the scholar define

objectives that are realistic and achievable? Does the scholar identify important questions in the field? Adequate Preparation: Does the scholar show an understanding of existing scholarship in the field? Does

the scholar bring the necessary skills to his or her work? Does the scholar bring together the resources necessary to move the project forward?

Appropriate Methods: Does the scholar use methods appropriate to the goals? Does the scholar apply effectively the methods selected? Does the scholar modify procedures in response to changing circumstances?

Significant Results: Does the scholar achieve the goals? Does the scholar’s work add consequentially to the field? Does the scholar’s work open additional areas for further exploration?

Effective Presentation: Does the scholar use a suitable style and effective organization to present his or her work? Does the scholar use appropriate forums for communicating the work to its intended audiences? Does the scholar present his or her message with clarity and integrity?

Reflective Critique: Does the scholar critically evaluate his or her own work? Does the scholar bring an appropriate breadth of evidence to his or her critique? Does the scholar use evaluation to improve the quality of future work?

Post-Professional Programs

AOTA maintains a list of post-professional programs on the Find A School page on AOTA’s Web site. Effective March 1, 2018, we will continue to list the post-professional program’s contact information, degree offered, website link, and institutional accreditor, but will no longer include detailed information about the program, e.g., Major Area(s) of Study, Area(s) of Concentration, Distance Learning Options, Admission Requirements, Special Features, or Financial Aid. If you currently have a post-professional listing and have any changes to the post-professional program’s contact information, degree offered, website link, or institutional accreditor, please email changes to [email protected].

Winter 2018

ACOTE has approved a new policy, IV.B.4. Transitioning to the Doctoral Level to guide OTM programs preparing to transition to the OTD level of education. Revisions have been made to policy IV.B.1 . Additions and Changes. These revisions address minor changes and when they will be processed. ACOTE Policy IV.E.3. Interim Reports to ACOTE was revised to be consistent with new ACOTE Policy IV.B.4. Transitioning to the Doctoral Level.

Policy Changes

CAPSTONE PROJECT: Standard D.1.0: The individual capstone project allows the student to demonstrate synthesis and application of knowledge gained during the 14-week capstone experience. Standard D.1.8: Ensure completion and dissemination of an individual doctoral capstone that demonstrates synthesis of in-depth knowledge in the focused area of study. Clarification: The capstone project must be completed on an individual basis. The capstone project must “demonstrate synthesis of in-depth knowledge in the focused area of study,” but does NOT need to be a research project. Examples would include, but are not limited to, community development project (e.g., design of accessible public space), development of an educational program, advocacy initiative, etc.

Notes for Program Directors

Every accredited program is required to submit an Annual Report every year, even if the program has a Self-Study or Interim Report due that same year. The 2018 Annual Report is available for completion in ACOTE Online (https://acote.aota.org) and is due no later than February 15, 2018. The Annual Report provides data that ACOTE is required to collect every year regarding program trends. Aggregate information will then be presented at AOTA’s Annual Conference in Salt Lake City and provides the basis for the Academic Programs Annual Data Report.

Annual Reports

Annual fees are due each year, including the year in which an on-site evaluation is scheduled. For new pro-grams, the annual fee becomes effective with the first full academic year for which the program has accredi-tation status. See the current Fee Schedule. Invoices for the 2018 annual fees will be e-mailed to program directors by July 2, 2018 and payment is due no later than October 15, 2018. For accredited programs and all accredited program locations, the 2018/2019 annual fee is $4,065. For programs with a status of Accredi-tation-Inactive, the 2018/2019 annual fee is $2,030. The AOTA Accreditation Department should be notified if early notification is required to facilitate processing of a purchase order for payment. Transitioning Programs and Inactive Fees: Programs must pay the annual reaccreditation fee for each ac-credited program. Once a program transitions degree levels, the newly accredited program will be charged the annual reaccreditation fee. Annual Inactive Fees will be charged for programs transitioning from the OT master’s-degree level to the OT doctoral-degree level or for programs transitioning from the OTA associate-degree level to the OTA baccalaureate-degree level until the transitional program applies for and receives voluntary withdrawal of accreditation.
