Detecting movement

The motion-detector feature of the installation centres around a visual system which has been designed and developed to an exceptionally high electronic and optical standard. The infrared beam which is radiated from moved or moving objects is directed straight at a pyroelectric sensor via the hemispherical Fresnel lens.

Automatic light control (PD4 MASTER)

FunctionThe light is switched on automatically in the operating mode “Fully Automatic” once move-ment is detected and a pre-set minimum degree of brightness (switch-on value) is not achieved, just as it is switched off automatically in the absence of movement or when a pre-set maximum degree of brightness (switch-off value) is exceeded. It is possible to program either the switch-on or the switch-off value. If it is the switch-on value which is pre-set, the detector will calculate the switch-off value automatically, and vice versa. When the system is in the operating mode “Semi-automatic”, it is always necessary to switch on the light by hand, either using the switch provided or by remote control. In so far as there is no detection of movement at the same time, the degree of brightness at any giv-en time is indicated as follows with the assistance of light-emitting diodes (LED’s) in the appliance:Appliance identifies “bright”: LED flashes at a steady rate Appliance identifies “dark”: LED does not flash at allAdditional information: In order to avoid situations where switching-on and switching-off occurs unnec-essarily, the reaction on the part of the appliance to any change in the degree of brightness is triggered on a time-delayed basis. Passing cloud, for exam-ple, would suffice to cause unnecessary switching.Time-delay “bright ⇒ dark”: 30 secondsTime-delay “dark ⇒ bright”: 5 minutesLearning processThe system features a learning process, which enables the detector to take into consideration the fact that the illuminating power of fluorescent lamps is not yet fully developed at the beginning of their service life, and likewise their illuminating power deteriorates with age. Once the switch-on value has been preset, the detector switches on the light repeatedly for periods of 5 minutes regardless as to whether it has detected any move-ments, and then switches it off again until such time as the fluorescent lamps have developed their full illuminating power. It is, however, also possi-ble to get around having to carry out this process

(see “Automatic memorizing function of the current twilight value for light control”).

Manual light control (PD4 MASTER)

Regardless of the availability of light at any given time, the light can be switched on or off manually using the remote-control facility or a contact switch located at the input “R” (impulse 0.2 to 0.5 sec.). Important: Appliance must be closed (see “Clos-ing the PD4 Master”). Switching on using remote control or switchThe light will remain switched on for as long as movements are detected in the areas of coverage. Once the last movement has been detected, the light will remain on for the duration of the follow-up time as per setting. The appliance will then return independently to the mode selected. (Fully or Semi-automatic).Where the appliance has already identified the con-dition “bright” prior to the lighting being switched on manually, the level of brightness will not be moni-tored after switching-on has taken place.Where the appliance has already identified the condition “dark” prior to the lighting being switched on manually, the level of brightness will be monitored after switching-on has taken place, and the lighting will be switched off following a delay of 5 minutes once the switch-off value has been exceeded.Switching off using remote control or switchThe light will remain switched off for as long as movements are detected in the area of cover-age. Once the last movement has been detected, the light will remain off for the duration of the follow-up time as per setting. The appliance will then return independently to the operating mode selected. (Fully or Semi-automatic).

Automatic appliance control (PD4/M)

Other consumers such as ventilation installations or alarm devices can be controlled via a volt-age-free switch-output. This relay operates strictly on the basis of reaction to movement and can be equipped, for the purpose of safety applica-tions and with enhanced protection against false alarms, with a delayed switch-on function to drive ventilation installations.

Parallel- or Master/Slave operation

The LUXOMAT® PD4 Master can operate either on its own or together with other detectors. Parallel operation involving several PD4/MAs the PD4/M occupancy detector is equipped with an ingeniously logical capacity for measuring brightness and a facility for controlling light on the basis of presence, it is not recommended that it be

operated in parallel with other Master-appliances or motion-detectors.Please always select the Master/Slave mode of operation as described in the following for the purpose of extending the area of coverage by a Master-appliance.Master/Slave mode of operationAny number of PD4 Slave’s* can be connected up to a PD4 Master for the purpose of extending the area of coverage without incurring significant expense. All that the Slave-appliances do is to pass on information on movement to the Master-appliance. The PD4 Master measures the degree of brightness and, where appropriate, switches on the light and other appliances.Additional information: When in Master/Slave mode of operation, the Master-appliance must always be installed at the location where there is least daylight.*Any 220V motion-detector (e.g. LUXOMAT® RC-plus) connected up to the slave-input of a master will serve as an acceptable alternative to using a slave-appliance. For this purpose, the motion-detector must be set at daytime/night-time operation, ensuring a follow-up time of between 2 seconds and 1 minute.

Assembly, commissioningImportant: All work on the 230V power system must be carried out by qualified personnel only! The mains’ voltage must be cleared prior to com-mencement of assembly.

Prior to mounting:Prior to mounting the unit please make sure of the following:

• LUXOMAT® PD4 has to be fixed on a solid surface

• do not connect more than 2 LUXOMAT® PD4 in parallel to avoid potential false switching.

• the connected load must not exceed the follow-ing ratings:resistive load 230VAC/10A max.inductive load 230VAC/5A max.

• the view of LUXOMAT® PD4 must not be ob-scured by objects since those will block IR-radia-tion from being detected

• LUXOMAT® PD4 is a dedicated automatic light-switch and is not intended to be used in burglar alarm and intrusion detection systems.

3. Montage Determining the location of installation

In order to guarantee flawless and satisfactory operation of the unit, the following characteristic of infrared motion sensors must be taken especially into consideration:

Motion sensors switch most sensitively if movement occurs crossways to the line of the lens segments. During frontal approach, the sensitivity and therewith the effective detection range is greatly reduced.

Installation of the LUXOMAT® PD4-SM

Disconnect mains supply! The detector must be installed on a solid and level surface. There is no need for frames.

For mounting remove lens (C) (turn anticlockwise)Fasten the mounting pod to the ceiling. After installation replace the lens and lock (turn clockwise). After an initial 60-second self-test phase, the LUXOMAT® PD4 is ready for operation.

In case the sensing area of the LUXOMAT® PD4 is too large or areas are being covered that should not be monitored, the range can be reduced or limited through use of the enclosed masking clips (e).

Installation of the LUXOMAT® PD4-FC

The detector has been designed and developed specifically for installation in suspended ceilings. For mounting remove lens (turn clockwise).A circular opening of diameter 68–70 mm must first of all be produced in the ceiling. Having con-nected up the cables in accordance with regula-tions, the detector is inserted into the opening as shown in the drawing opposite and fixed into position with the assistance of the spring clips.

Installation of the LUXOMAT® PD4-FM

The detector can be installed in conventional inlet-sockets mounted on the ceiling. The assembly plate enclosed must be stripped off prior to installation and secured to the ceiling using 4 screws and ensuring that it is not laterally transposed. Having connected up the cables in accordance with regulations, the detector can be placed in position as shown in the drawing opposite and, applying a little pressure, can then be locked into position with the assistance of the spring clips.(Please refer to the connection diagrams of the Operating Instructions when connecting up the wiring)

Commissioning the LUXOMAT® PD4 MASTER

When installation has been completed and the 230V mains’ voltage has locked on, the red LED will flash for a period of 60 seconds, indicating that the LUXOMAT® PD4 MASTER is in self-checking mode. Once this process of self-checking has been completed, the various settings

can be carried out. With regard to this procedure, please refer to the chapter “Settings without the use of remote control”.If you have the remote control LUXOMAT® IR-RC, which is available as an extra, please read the chap-ter on the next page “Settings using remote control”.

Fully/Semi-automaticThe Master-appliances leave our factory set for operating mode “Fully automatic” (see “Automatic light control PD4 Master”). When commissioning has been completed and the 60-second period in self-checking mode is up, the system can, if required, be switched over to operating mode “Semi-automatic”, using the LUXOMAT® IR-PD The following is the procedure required:

1. Open appliance ⇒ Acknowledge- ment via connected lighting

2. Switch from operating mode “Fully automatic” to “Semi-automatic” or vice versa using the key “Light ON/OFF” ⇒ Acknowledgement only via the red LED on the appliance as per the following: Semi-automatic: Rapid flashing of the LED for a period of approx. 3 seconds Fully automatic: LED lights up for a period of approx. 1.5 seconds

3. Close appliance ⇒ Acknowledge- ment via connected lighting

Commissioning the LUXOMAT® PD4 SLAVE

When installation has been completed and the 230V mains’ voltage has locked on, the green LED will flash for a period of 60 seconds, indicat-ing that the LUXOMAT® PD4 SLAVE is in self-check-ing mode. The detector is ready for service immediately after the process of self-checking has been completed. It is not possible to carry out settings on the PD4 SLAVE.

used for the purpose of light control, the follow-up time should be set at 16 minutes as otherwise the switching of the relay, which can be heard, could prove annoying.

Twilight-switch for light control (relay 1)

The switch-on value for the light can be set at between 40 and 2000 Lux. The switch-off value is calculated automatically.Symbol : Night-time operationSymbol : Daytime/Night-time

This procedure is re-peated until the fluorescent lamps have developed their full illuminating power, thus enabling the switch-off value to be calculated conclusively.

Follow-up time for appliance-control (relay 2)

The time can be set infinitely var-iably at between 5 minutes and 120 minutes. There is a period of delay prior to switch-on of between 5-10 minutes for times set in excess of 15 minutes.

Symbol : Impulse = 2 sec. (see Page 30 “Ad-ditional information on the Impulse function”)Symbol A: Alarm impulse = 1 sec. (Enhanced protection against false alarms: The detec-tor will not engage unless at least 3 movements have been registered within a period of 10 seconds).Additional information: If the relay is not being used for the purpose of appliance-control, the follow-up time should be set at 120 minutes as otherwise the switching of the relay, which can be heard, could prove annoying.

Mode of procedure of follow-up times

As soon as a movement is detected inside the area of coverage, the Master initiates the inte-grated timer. The consumers which have been connected up either become illuminated or run for the duration of the pre-set period of time. If further movements are detected within this period of time, the timer will be reset each time.

Settings carried out using remote control (for the PD4 Master only) Remote control LUXOMAT IR-PD

The infrared remote-control facility enables the LUXOMAT® PD4-Master occupancy detector to be used to considerably greater effect when compared with more traditional ap-plications.

Important information on commissioning

Additional information: Before leaving the factory, Potentiom-eter 1 has been set at “TEST” and Potentiometer 2 at “SUN”. All values which have been programmed using the remote control will be deleted in the event of power failure in this position, i.e. before carrying out programming using the remote

control, it is imperative that Potentiometer 2 be switched over to “MOON” or any other value.Acknowledgement of receiptEvery signal which is validly received by the LUXOMAT® PD4/M is acknowledged in the form of 2-second-long illumination of the red LED and is indi-cated by the connected lighting flashing. Commands which have not been accepted are indicated by illumination of the red LED of 0.5 seconds’ duration.UnblockingEvery time connecting-up to the mains takes place, the PD4/M is blocked. This status makes it impos-sible to carry out settings using the remote control. In order to permit programming to be carried out, the occupancy detector has to be unblocked with the assistance of the remote control (see “Opening the PD4 MASTER”)

EEPROM (Memory)All of the values which have been set on the Master using the control knobs are overwritten by the remote control and stored in the EEPROM. In this way, the pre-set values remain preserved even in the event of a power failure.Additional information: When the 230V mains’ volt-age has locked on, the red LED will flash for a pe-riod of 60 seconds, indicating self-checking mode.Flashing at intervals of one second = EEPROM emptyRapid flashing = EEPROM contains information

BatteryThe remote control is supplied complete with battery. Where teleadjustment is not possible, first of all check whether the battery has been correctly polarized (open battery compartment by press-ing the plastic springs together and removing the battery-holder). If this does not solve the problem, the battery must be replaced.

Setting the functions

Opening the PD4 MASTER The PD4 MASTER is opened using this key and can then be programmed for the respec-tive function using the remaining keys.Important: Must be actuated following every occurrence of a power failure, otherwise settings cannot be changed.

Closing the PD4 MASTER The detector is protected against occur-rences of inadvertent manipulation. When in this state, the only functions which can be actuated are “RESET”, “Light On/Light Off” and “TEST”. We must distinguish between this state and “Per-manent protection against sabotage” (see also Page 30)

Twilight-value for light control (relay 1) It is possible, on the basis of the stand-

ard values indicated, to set a specific switch-value for brightness. In the case of rooms which have access to daylight, the recommended setting is 300 Lux as opposed to a setting of 1000 Lux for rooms with no dayight. Any switch-value can be stored for brightness using the “Automatic input function”, which is described in the following.

Automatic input function of the current twilight-value for light control (relay 1)Any value for brightness (approx. 5-2000 Lux) can be read as the switch-value for the lighting using this function.Important: The appliance distinguishes between the following two methods of approach. We rec-ommend: “Inputting with lighting switched on “.Additional information: Values which are too bright and too dark cannot be input (red LED flashes extremely quickly).

Inputting with lighting switched on (recommended method)Having pressed the key, the current value for brightness is pre-set as the switch-off value. The switch-on value is calculated automatically.Method of approach: with the lighting switched on, wait for the exact point in time in the morning as of which artificial lighting is no longer required and then actuate the input-key.

Inputting with lighting switched off Having pressed the key, the current value for brightness is pre-set as the switch-on value. The switch-off value is calculated automatically.Method of approach: wait for the desired degree of twilight in the evening and then actuate the input-key.Additional information in connection with fluores-cent lamps: As soon as the pre-set switch-on value has been reached, the detector will switch on the light for a period of 5 minutes regardless as to whether or not movements have been detected, then switching it off again. This procedure is re-peated until the fluorescent lamps have developed their full illuminating power. The learning phase can be shortened by inputting when the lamps have warmed up. No learning phase is required with the method “Inputting with lighting switched on” in so far as the fluorescent lamps have al-ready developed their full illuminating power.

Gong-program for light control (relay 1) The follow-up time is less than 1 second in this mode (impulse program). This program facili-tates, for example, the triggering of any automatic stairwell-lighting systems or gongs. Each impulse is followed by idle time of 9 seconds’ duration, dur-ing which period no movements are registered.Additional information with regard to the Impulse function: Please note when activating the Impulse function that the regular clicking of the relay could prove annoying depending on the application and location of installation of the appliance.

Follow-up time for light control (relay 1) The requested follow-up time for the light- ing connected can be programmed to the very second by pressing the appro- priate key.

Follow-up time for appliance control (relay 2) The requested follow-up time for the appli- ances connected can be programmed to the very second by pressing the appropri- ate key.

30 31

Additional information: switch-on is automatically delayed by 5-10 minutes in the case of follow-up times in excess of 15 minutes (red ring), i.e. venti-lation installations, for example, can be engaged with a time delay if movements are detected over a period of at least 5 minutes.

Impulse program for appliance control (relay 2)The voltage-free contact is closed for a period of 2 seconds. This is followed by a period of idle time of 8 seconds’ duration. This facilitates, for example, the triggering of external alarm devices.

Alarm impulse program for appliance control (relay 2)Is suitable wherever faulty switching is to be avoid-ed at all costs. The relay will not close until at least three movements have been registered over a period of 10 seconds (impulse = 1 second).

Test mode The area being monitored can be paced out regardless of the level of ambient brightness. Each movement switches the light on for 1 second, then switching it off for a period of 2 seconds.

Permanent protection against sabotage This function blocks the LUXOMAT® PD4 MASTER permanently (green LED is illuminated). This operating mode can only be activated during the period of 5 seconds following closure of the detector. This status will only permit actuating the function “Light on/Light off”.The procedure for leaving this mode is as follows:1. Switch off the current2. Apply current for 30 - 60 seconds 3. Switch of the current again4. Apply current 5. Open detector (see “Opening the PD4”)

Fully/Semi-automatic Light on/Light off when open

When commissioning has been com-pleted and the 60-second period in self-check-ing mode is up, the system can, if required, be switched from operating mode “Fully automatic” to “Semi-automatic” or vice versa, using the “Light ON/OFF” key (see “Fully/Semi-auto-matic”).

Light on/Light off when closed The light can be switched off and on at any time using the remote control. The appli-ance will then return independently to the mode selected. (Fully/Semi-automatic).

Light on The light will remain switched on for as long as movements are detected in the areas of coverage. Once the last movement has been detected, the light will remain on for the duration of the follow-up time as per setting. The appli-ance will then return independently to the mode selected. (Fully or Semi-automatic).Where the appliance has identified the condition “bright” prior to the lighting being switched on manually, the level of brightness will not be moni-tored after switching-on has taken place.Where the appliance has identified the condition “dark” prior to the lighting being switched on manually, the level of brightness will be moni-tored after switching-on has taken place, and the lighting will be switched off following a delay of 5 minutes once the switch-off value has been exceeded.

Light off The light will remain switched off for as long as movements are detected in the area of coverage. Once the last movement has been detected, the light will remain off for the duration of the follow-up time as per setting. The appliance will then return independently to the operating mode selected. (Fully or Semi-automatic).

Resetting when open All values which have been programmed using the remote control IR-PD are deleted, and those values in the PD4/M which have been set by potentiometer are activated. Additional information: The switch-off threshold requires to be re-learned or input.

Resetting when closed Both the relay for the lighting and the relay for the appliances are switched off, i.e. opened and the follow-up times reset.

• Fluorescent lamps are connected up. The detector is going through a learning phase.

• This ceases to occur once the learning phase has been completed (approx. 10x on/off)

• Using the remote control, this learning phase can be shortened or even avoided

The function “Light on/Light off“ is not working

• The relay for the light control is set at Impulse function

• Select follow-up time for light control of between 15 seconds and 30 minutes (Please note: could destroy other appliances which are connected, e.g. automatic stairwell-lighting systems)

Despite perfect functioning of the PD4, a relay is heard switching constantly

• R1 or R2 on Impulse function• Appliance output R2 is not

being used, but is set at a short follow-up time

• Light output R1 is not being used, but is set at a short follow-up time

• If possible, select continuous contact• Set follow-up time for appliance-control R2 at 120

minutes• Set follow-up time for light control at 30 minutes

Other forms of mal-function during pro-gramming with IR-RC

• Open appliance and then actuate RESET key and re-program

MASTER MASTER/SLAVE-MODE

R 2

Master/Slave-operation, i.e. masters operate as slaves but with additional push button function to switch the light manu-ally. The preset values will not get lost. The master is the only unit to read in the levels and to switch the connected loads. The slave units will react on motion only, independently of the lux levels, by sending an impulse via the dry contact.

Standard operation Standard operation, manual switching pos-sible (NO-contact to be pressed for approx. 1 sec.) The potentiometers not to be set on “Test“ or “Sun“ otherwise the preadjusted values will get lost during this manual operation.

Master/Slave-operation with one master and several slaves. The master is the only unit to read in the lux levels and to switch the con-nected loads. The slave units will react on motion only, independently of the lux levels, by sending an impulse via the dry contact.

The parallel-operation is not allowed for master units !
