1-1. INTRODUCTION

This ~anuai provid~s 4ifqrmation for the Operation, Installation, and Main-. tenance pro~edure,s for the WAlJiCO Locomotive Low Speed Regulation System. This

system can be applied-to the electrical controls of most .standard American m~ diesel-el_ectric lOQomoti:v~s. -System components are de:signed for single unit applications or multiple locomotive applications with minimum alteration and without: any change to the origma.J. manual controls in the loc6motive cab. Aii illustrated block diagram is showii in ~igure 1-1. . .. . '.

Two types of multiple· unit. operations can be accomplished· with·this syst~m: one type requires equipment to be moun~don every.. locomotive.in the consist, and the other type requires equipment to be mo~ted only _in the master locQmotive.

Automatic speed reglilatiQn ( supervised:by the:_engfnema.n): on a locomotive is achieved by controlling, the throttle solenoidi for coarse i>9wer. control,.: and by adjusting current through the tiattery field on t}ie main generator for fine.power con-· trol. · · - ~ · it,

This equipment is designed for on-board automatic operation and can be interfaced with the LSR-100 Cab Signal and Locomotive Speed Regulation System for tower remote control operation.

2-1. SYSTEM.DESCRIPTION

General - The Locomotive Speed Regulation equipment consists of an elec~ :tronics module,. control panel, tachometer.generator, battery ·field-amplifier, brake pressure switch,. and battery field amplifier bypas~-switch. · · ·

- .. • ;. ~:.}!'· ;' '

This equipment adjusts the throttle for coars~ power· control and regulates: , current through the battery field of the main generator for fine power control.,

. Actual locomotive speed is compared with desired speed and any speed deviation·is amplified and processed. · The locoin.otive is accelerated automatically to the de~ sired speed. , ( · ·

-!· .

This system can be applied to., and will closely regulate the speed of, all lQcomoti ves that are equipped with.an eight step throttle control system and D. C. · excitation of the main gen~.r~t?~· . .... . . . ..

2-2. SINGLE AND MULTIPLE LOCOMOTIVE OPERATIONS

The two possible arrangements of multiple locomotive operation, that illus.!. trate the proper application of speed regulation equipment, are shown in Figur~s 2-1 and 2-2. Either arrangenientcan. be interface.d·with tower rem.ote.control equipment. · · ·· i •

.. - . ..... .

The arrangement illustrated i~ Figure 2-1 shows all or"fhe speed regulation e.quipment mounted in the master locomotive.: 'rhis · speed regulatibn e~uipment provides coarse and fine power eontrol of the.master locomotive, k.nd coarse con- · trol of the remote units through throttle notching. 1 · · : ·· . · ··

. .

The throttle setting for the master and ~lave units is controlled by the electronics module in the master unit. The notching sequence will vary depending upon the position of the units; that is, if the slave units are in front or. in back of the master unit. See Table 2-1 for. throttle notching sequence:and relay sequence.

The second arrangement illustrated in Figure 2-2 is similar to the first ex..: cept that each slave locomotive has its owrl.coµtrolling battery.fieid amplifier on-· board. The signals supplied by the electronie'S module in the master unit controls the master battery field amplifier and the battery field amplifier in each slave unit _via parallel trainline connections. This provides for smoother operation and finer speed contr~l of all loco}llotives ( master and slav~s ) •

2-3 OVERSPEED OPTION.. . ..

The overspeed ·option-provides a means of applying locomotive brakes when the locomotive is; in automatic operation and exceeds a pre-set speed limit.

A,. Electronics Module ( see Figure 5-5 )

The electronics module, located in the master unit,. is the major component . fo,r automatic speed regulation. All other component~ of the system are used to sense information that is used by the electronics module or to interface the elec-tronics module with the engineman or locomotive. ·· ·

The following equipment is contained in the electro:ajc module: ·

1 •. Power Supply Pre-regulator - converts the locomotive battery voltage ( 56 to 90V) to a voltage level ( 28 to 43V) that.is free of transiep.t spikes, as required for the voltage regulator printed circuit board.

2. Voltage Regulator - provides a regulated output ( 23. 8 to 24V) when the input is 28 to 43 volts.

3. Voltage Divider - provides a highly regulated+ and - 12 volts as required by the circuits of the hump locomotive speed regulation equipment

4. EVAC II Printed Circuit Board - in conjunction with the axle generator provides speed setting, speed sensing, and speed error detection functions.

The axle generator produces a variable frequency fixed amplitude signal with frequency directly proportional to speed. This signal is detected by a threshold detector which is located on the EV AC printed circuit board.

'l;'he output signal from the threshold detector is converted to a DC voltage proportional to speed. This signal is amplified and compared to the selected· speed sig:hal by an e.rror amplifier. Its output voltage is the difference between set speed and actual speed.

5. Pulse Width Generator Printed Circuit Board - translates the DC error signal from the EVAC board into a pulse width modulated signal. This signal iEJ amplified and is coupled to the battery field amplifier. The operation of the battery field amplifier is described in another part of this manual.

6. Throttle Logic Printed Circuit Board - translates the DC error signal from the EVAC board into a level or levels that sequence ( through the relay ·driver) relays KA, KB, and KC to provide throttle notching. . . . .

7. Relay Driver - with a +12V input applies O volts to energize the corresponding relay to notch the throttle for a speed change. ·

8. Kl Relay - energized whenever the locomotive has been conditioned for automatic operation. This requires the mode switch to be in automatic, the throttle in the idle detent, and either tower auto or on-board auto pushbutton to have been actuated.

5907, p. 7

Page 10: PDF Viewing archiving 300 dpi - Hitachi Rail · 2015-06-08 · SECTION I 1-1. INTRODUCTION This ~anuai provid~s 4ifqrmation for the Operation, Installation, and Main-. tenance pro~edure,s

. ·wABCD ~

9. K5 Rel~Y. - used to distinguish;between on~boarcf'a.utomatic and remote aut.oniatic operation. This relay. is used to interfac~ betwee~ ,Hump Locomotive Sp·eed Control system atid Tower Remote :Cont:r;ol Eq~ppient. K5 is energized when the hti:nip locomotive speed cQntrol is condit~gtied for tower remote automatic operation. · · . , . ,-:- .

10. K3 Relay - energized whenever Kl is energized and the brakes are released'~ Deenergizes when brakes are applied or when Kl is deenergized.

B. · Optional Overspeed Printed' Circuit Boards ,· ;

1. Voltage Regulator Board - Converts the voltage. outpµt of the Power Supply Pre-Regulator (.28-43VDC) to 28VDC, the voltage required to operate the overspeed equipment.

2. Shapert Limiter and_V=O Board - shapes the input signal from the axle generator and applies it to the Speed Filter board, and p_rovides a signal output when the train is stopped to prevent brakes fre>m being applied.

3. Speed Filter Board - Adjusted to the speed which is not to be exceeded. When this speed is approached, the amplitude of the output signal is . decreased. · " · · · ·

4. Level Detector and Relay Driver Board - Senses when the output of the speed filter board decreases below a pre-set level which would be the overspeed point. An oscillator is interrupted and this causes a relay to de.,.energize. This. relay interfaces witll the .br3:ke system and provides brake application.

C. Battery Field Amplifier - High Power ( Figure 2- 3) · Low Power ( Figure 2- 4)

The function of the battery field amplifier is to serve as l:!,Il interface between the electronics module and the electric drive of die locomotive (it adjusts excitation of the main generator field in response to the pulse width modulated signal produced by the electronics module) and to provide fine speed control of the locomotive.

The battery field amplifier is supplied- with a modulated DC voltage in the a_utomatic mode and with 72 volts DC in the manual mode ( this insures normal locomotive operatioi;t).

D. Control Panel f'igure 2-5)

The controi panel enables the engineman to initiate automatic speed regulation, to select the desired speed, to select remote automatic operation, and to return to normal manual operation.

The control panel contains the following equipment:

Auto/Manual selector switch - conditions the locomotive for automatic or manual operation.

On-Board pushbutton - sets up on-board automatic operation. Blue light is on and amber light is off.

Speed Selector switch - permits the engineer, when operating in the on-board automatic mode, to select speeds of 0, 1. 0, 1. 25, 1. 50, 1. 75, 2. O, 2. 25, 2. 5, 3. O, 3. 5, 4. 0, and 5. O mph.

Tower Auto Pushbutton - flashing amber whenever the tower requests remote automatic operation. The engineman acknowledges this request by pressing the pushbutton. The amber and the blue lights will be on steady when the system recognizes the acknowledgement.

Speedometer - indicates the speed ( 0 to 5 mph) of the locomotive in manual or automatic operation.

On-Board Auto pushbutton - cancels remote or tower automatic operation. and insures that on-board automatic operation is retained if the throttle is in the idle position.

Bypasses the battery field amplifier in the event of a malfunction and per~its manual control of the lo~omotive. The bypa:ss switch should be closed wheneve:ri the locomotive is started and when the locomotive is ~eing inspected or repaired.

F. Tachometer Generator._JService Mat111al 5856) · . . ; . ~ ! ·. , . :

· The tachometer generator is-mounted on alt axl~ of t}le master locomotive and provides pulses at a frequency~proportional to the aptltal speed of the locomotive. These pulses ar~ suppl~ed.t(j the co;ntro.l circuits in the electronics module.

The brake pressure switch interrupts automatic operation whenever the brakes are applied. Enables automatic oper.ation ( if 'the automatic mode is sele~ted and the throttle is at idle) when the brakes are released.

SECTION IU

3-1. GENERAL SYSTEM OPER_A !'{ON ( Figure 3-:1)

The engineman controls th~ rap.ge· of. powet available from the diesel engin~, not equipped with an automatic;_1:1pe~d regulati.on system, with the throttle which controls the governor to maintain eight d~_scr:ete engine speeds. The diesel engine drives a de generator which provides power to the propulsion motors.

Automatic operation is achieved, with the ·automatic speed regulation system interfaced with the electrical controls of the locomotive, by controlling signals oh the throttle solenoid trainline for coarse power control, and by adjusting current through the battery field on the main generator for fine power control. The speed can be set by manipulating the. speed selector on the control panel for on-board control, or by means of remote cont1'."ol .

.. NOTE

Remote control of the system is intended only to supplement the crew's operating instructions, and to provide direct control of locomotive speed when necessary. Full responsibility for safe. operation of the locomotive will be retained by the engineman in both manual and automatic control modes •..

Figure 3-1 illustrates the syste~- as applied to the master and slave units. I .

2. Mode selector swjtch ( control panel l 41 the automatic position.

3. Depress On-Board Auto button.

4. Position speed selector for desired speed.

5. 'Independent brake handle in the release position.

Interlocks will interrupt automatic operation ( deenergize Kl) if the throttle is moved from the idle position. The throttle will have to be returned to idle and the On-Board Auto pushbutton pressed to resume automatic operation ( reenergize Kl). .

B. Remote Control Operation

The locomotive can be remotely controlled when remote control equipment is interfaced with the on-board speed· regulatiqn equip:rµent •.

: ' . ~ .

An amber light on the control panel will flash when remote speed control is requested. The engineman will place the manual controls as he would for on-board automatic operation 3.D:d acknowledge the request by depressing the Tower Auto pushbutton. The amber light will come on steady when remote operation has started (blue light will also be on). The engineman will have to release the brakes and reacknowledge the request by depressing the Tower Auto pushbutton if the amber light continues to flash.

C. Control Operating Functions· :-:,.

The interlock checking circuit senses the position of the manual throttle control, brake control, and th'e mode switch on the control pan.et The engineman places the throttle in the idle position, nioves tJie mode selector switch to the automatic position, depresses the on-board auto pushbutton, Selects desired speed, and releases the brakes. Relays Kl, KlP, and K3 will energize. These relays place the system in automatic operation and connect the required trainlines for desired throttle solenoid operation. K5 is energized when operating in the remote automatic mode and Tower Auto has been selected.

Air pressure is sensed by a pressure switch when the eng_ineman applies independent locomotive brakes. The K3 relay deenergizes and intefrupts the auto~atic speed regulation by removi~ voltage from the throttle solenoids, interrupts GP.

5-i. SYSTEM MAINTENANCE

· General - this sectiob. provides inf~r~ation and p~ocedures covering · matnte:nance · of the overall _ E)>pfie<:} regula~ion system. and parts list. The procedures

will aid maintenance personnel to restore operatio_n ot:.a faulty system. Additional illfotlnatioh is provided. to aici in developing a preventive maintenance program to avoid possible system fa.ilur~.

. Visual Checks - an eff.ective visual inspection wili sometimes indicate a p9tential source of failure. This same procedure may also be Used When a failure does occur. Listed below are a series of inspectiQns that may be performed When a faUu.te occurs, or at inte_rvals suited to the convenience of the purchaser •

. Maintenance - involves the replacement of faulty components, PC boards

and (lj relays for example, _whicll should b~ returned to WABCO Signal and Co:tn.mU:_hications Division for repair and adjustment. The procedure for logic circuit trou.bleshdbting is to replace suspectec( printed circuit boards with those known to be operating properly. . . ' . . .

5-2. SYSTEM TROUBLESH.<;)OTING

troubleshooting - isolation of malfunctions is most easily a~complished when a logical troubleshpoting seqqence is followed. Perform the following preliminary tests in sequenc·e before any further· troubleshooting:

The locomotive should be in the manual mode and should be running at idle speed.

Preliminary Tests:

A. Check connectors, cables; fuses, and indicator·lamps for defects.

B. Insure that all plug-in Pc boards are properly inserted.
