AUGUST “Special Days”

The Bodcau Dam and Reservoir is operated and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a flood control, natural resource management, environmental stewardship and recreational multiple-use project. It extends 30 miles from the Lake Erling Dam in Arkansas to the Bodcau Dam at Bellevue with 33,500 acres of land open to the public for recreational purposes.

The area contains a wide range of wildlife habitat ranging from cypress swamps to upland pine and hardwood forests interspersed with grasslands and open fields. There are numerous seasonally flooded sloughs, beaver ponds, and large areas of flatland, bottomland and hardwood forests. Wildlife watching is a very popular year round activity on the Bodcau Wildlife Management Area. Non-game species such as great blue herons, several species of hawks, and barred horned and screech owls are common. Yellow, black and white, yellow-throated, magnolia, prairie and yellow-rumped warblers are regularly seen on the area. Numerous species of reptiles, amphibians and insects can also be seen.

Fishing opportunities include bass and bream fishing in addition to crawfishing during certain times. White-tailed deer, squirrel, rabbit, dove, quail, turkey, and waterfowl hunting opportunities exist on the Bodcau Wildlife Management Area during seasons.

BCOS members have enjoyed hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and camping at the Tom Merrill Recreation Area at Bodcau for many years. Some of us have participated in the annual orienteering event held in the spring. We have long participated in the National Hunting and Fishing Festival held in September with canoe and kayak instruction for visitors.

Once again it is time for y’all to put up with my ramblings. Activities for the month have been well attended and good times were had by those attending. The little misunderstanding at the meeting last month has been satisfactorily resolved and we are once again a small but cohesive unit. By the time you read this, we will have cleaned the duck ponds, floated the Sabine, and been safety boats for one practice and one race. We will also have had a fantastic time on the Jeems Bayou Float.

Our group is and will be saddened by the departure of John and Cathy Joyce who are in the process of moving to Arkansas. Prior to leaving they were kind enough to give the Chapter three life vests. I’m sure we will make good use of them.

On the 19th and 20th the Louisiana Wildlife Federation will hold a meeting at the Red River Refuge. Everyone is invited to attend an Open House Reception on the 19th from 6:00 - 9:00 PM welcoming LWF Board Members and local dignitaries. There will be food, a cash bar and silent auction. The public is invited.

On the 20th and 21st there is a Triathlon at Lake DeGray in AR. Safety Boats would be welcome.

The month of September will see a float on the Dorcheat on the 10th and the Bodcau Wildlife Fest on the 24th. Much help will be needed for that day.

I need everyone to be thinking about how they can help the Bayou Chapter in the coming year. We will need a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary. Please consider volunteering for one of the positions.

Hope to see everyone at the August monthly meeting on Tuesday the 16th.

Bayou Chapter of the Ozark Society - July 19, 2016 minutesMeeting was called to order at 6:40 p.m. by Chairman Dick Maxwell. Our guests Jesse Heflin and David Greer were introduced and welcomed. Dick then introduced Gary Hackman, who stated tonight’s speakers are all of us, because we all sent in pictures for a slide presentation of various National Parks. Gary started with some basic information:

……………400 different sites are part of the park system……………Hot Springs was the first site……………Yellowstone was the first national park……………Devil’s Tower was the first national monument

The slides were grouped by national park, monument, cemeteries, etc. Not all states (nor Alaska and Hawaii) were represented by pictures; but MANY different states’ national parks were. This was a really gorgeous slide show presentation. Thank you, Gary, for putting so much time into it! Business meeting: After a brief break, the meeting was called to order at 7:37 p.m. Secretary: The June minutes were published in the July newsletter. Sandy Roerig moved that the minutes be accepted as published in the newsletter, and Ann Gibson seconded. Motion carried. Treasurer: No report Committee reports Newsletter: Great job, Marian, Sandy & Roy!Conservation: Sandy Roerig reported on fracking in Louisiana. There are 600 wells in the Gulf of Mexico, with billions of gallons of waste water going in to the gulf. More than half of the gas produced in the USA is done with fracking. Past Outings Triathlon safety boats for the Sunrise Swim club: John Joyce thanked those who came out. Colorado Ozark Society trip: Dee Jaye Teutsche and Kenneth Holdings reported how much fun they had. They did a lot of hiking, along with Barbie Halbert. Old Business Dick reminded us that BCOS members can rent a kayak with paddle and PFD for $10. If being used for service (triathlon safety boat), then there is no charge.

For those of you who were not able to make it to breakfast at Strawn’s on Kings Highway, or to the Duck Pond on East Kings Highway on Saturday, July 23,2016, allow me to confirm your thought that it is summertime in Shreveport, Louisiana.  As such, the temperature, and humidity, is something to be dealt with. In fact, it has been rumored that one participant suggested that they not be invited to another DPCU in July.   With all the above considered, you still missed what all BCOS events turn out to be – an opportunity to visit friends with like interests and have some fun!   The early bunch who met at Strawn’s around 7 A.M. consisted of John and Cathy Joyce, Dick Maxwell and Roy O’Neal.  We not only had a great visit, but can attest to the fact that Strawn’s continues to serve a very good breakfast.  The biscuits on this morning were so big that they were serving only one instead of the normal two with an order.  Cathy’s omelet was enormous too, and provided the breakfast for her on Sunday.  Sorry the rest of you missed it.   The other BCOSers who were waiting at the parking lot, or showed up a little later, were Marian Howard, Sandy Roerig, Roger and Melinda West, Ann Gibson, and Gary, Jenny & Wheezy Hackman. No, it was not Wheezy’s first DPCU experience.  Some of you will certainly remember the first.  Strangely enough, Gary and Jenny did not bring their tandem canoe this time.  Wonder why?   Sandy brought her canoe, which she and Marian used to collect plenty of very interesting debris from the pond.  Roget West had his kayak, and Melanie brought her “brand new to her” Old Town Rush kayak, which she was paddling for the first time.  (When she revealed how much she had paid her friend for the boat, yours truly suggested she must have been wearing a mask when she made the deal.)  Melanie hit the water like a real trouper and got back to the launch site after collecting her share of prizes.   At this point I want to commend all those who manned their boats because the strange growth that is in the ponds now certainly create a daunting challenge for the paddlers.  Good job folks. Everyone did a great job, and even though we collected only 14 bags of trash between the growth along the banks, and that previously mentioned in the water, those bags were tough to come by.   A little side note – the duck pond area was a “hot spot” for Pokemon Go and there were a large number of people walking about with their eyes focused on their phones, searching for that little dude.  I offered to capture him with my grabbers if I saw one, but somehow felt they did not think I was capable.  Know what?  They were right.   Thanks to everyone who came out and got soaked with sweat that Saturday. I am committed to assuring that the next DPCU will not be as “H&H”.
