Once again, the Zoo and Zoo Society’s staffs are faced with the difficult task of finding words to convey our gratitude for the generous support that we continue to receive from you, our loyal members, friends and donors. Last year, the Zoo Society enjoyed a banner year, netting more than $10,000,000 in donations for the Zoo.

This total reminds us, yet again, of how much we, and the Zoo, depend on you to keep the Zoo’s exhibits fresh, its animals healthy, its visitors learning and its conservation programs successful. Your gifts ensure that the Zoo and the wildlife it cares for will remain safe and secure well into the future.

The Zoo Society received a remarkable $4 million gift from the estate of Addison G. Mangum, M.D. This donation is the largest single gift received by the Society to date. Three other estate gifts—$1.3 million from Juanita Spalding and $500,000 from both Catherine B. Harley and Dorothy K. Sudderth—brought an additional $2.3 million to the Society.

Several significant gifts supported specific Zoo programs. BB&T granted $250,000 to the Society’s capital campaign, Project: Polar Bears, becoming the signature sponsor of the new Polar Bear exhibit’s main viewing building. Another major gift, $210,000, arrived from loyal friends Bob and Bonnie Meeker, to underwrite significant improvements to the Marsh exhibit including a new sculpture, Murmurations. Another major art gift, a life-size bronze, Bear and Shaman, was given to the Zoo Society by the Family of Stephen A. Wainwright in memory of Ruth Palmer Wainwright.

During the year, Zoo Society memberships brought in $1,804,768. Our gift shops netted $756,485 and Zoo To Do, the Society’s annual fundraiser, spon-sored by Randolph Telephone and hosted by the Randolph Friends of the Zoo, earned $103,262.

These generous gifts empowered the Zoo Society to turn over $3,242,981 to the Zoo, including $2,023,478 for general operating support and $1,219,503 for capital projects and other Zoo programs. The Society transferred $285,076 to Sylvan Heights Bird Park, the Zoo’s and Zoo Society’s conservation and exhibition partner in Scotland Neck.

In the end, 2012 stood out as one of the most remarkable years in the Zoo Society’s history—an achievement that arose solely from the goodwill and generosity you have shown the Zoo and Zoo Society.
