Bartender of the MonthThe hospitality industry in New Or-

leans is a vital part of our economy andbartenders are on the forefront of making avisitor’s stay memorable. This is especiallytrue of the LGBT tourist who comes to ourcity to experience our nightlife. So con-gratulations to all bartenders in our city fortaking great care of our locals and guests. One popular destination for the gay sight-seer is Oz and my bartender for the monthof June can be found there slinging cock-tails with a killer smile and upbeat persona.I am talking about Andy Evans who not onlyworks for Oz, but several other event com-panies in the hospitality industry like CarlMack Presents.

Andy is a jack of all trades, in additionto being a bartender, he is also an actor.Being behind the bar is like appearing on

stage in my opinion; one always has to beon. Armed with movie star good looks alsodoes not hurt anything either. What makesAndy a good bartender is he approacheshis job like everything else he does, profes-sionally and upbeat. Bartending can alsobe helpful to an actor with many transfer-able skills such as improvisation. You needto be fast on your feet and quick-witted towork in this industry.

But a pretty face does not a goodbartender make as we all know, there needsto be substance behind that counter. Treat-ing patrons like an audience can be veryhelpful, always give them what they want, respect, a little escapism and a worthycocktail for the price. Andy delivers on allthree. You can catch Andy’s close-up at Ozlocated at 800 Bourbon Street.

Ambush Movie Review:“Oh God!” Zilla

So very rarely am I one of those peoplewho run right out to catch a film on theweekend it is released to the public. But callme reminiscent of the days of my youth ofwatching those cheesy monster moviesfrom the past; but I could not help but go seeGodzilla this weekend. No more man in arubber suit squashing miniature studio setsof Japanese cities, Godzilla is all grown upand a special effects wonder. And after the1998 Roland Emmerich debacle, the public(myself included) were ready to see the bigguy again.

Yes, the giant lizard creature is backagain to terrorize Tokyo (and it seemsHawaii, San Francisco and Las Vegas also). The newest reincarnation of Godzilla isdirected by British Director Gareth Edwardswhose past credits include the widelypraised independent film Monsters in 2010.

So is this movie as good as all thehype, well first and foremost, you have tosuspend all belief and just enjoy the thrillride. The premise of this film is a completeset-up for the future sequels. It seems likethese creatures called MUTO (MassiveUnidentified Terrestrial Organism) havedecided to make an appearance with cata-strophic results on mankind. Enter Godzillato save the day and restore balance to theplanet. Simple, we have a good monsterand bad ones. If the movie was just left tothe creatures, then the flick may have suc-ceeded on all fronts, but alas, those peskyactors keep getting in the way.

On their behalf, the actors were obvi-ously not given much to work with for ascript, except for running, screaming andgiving great facial expressions of fear andawe. Unfortunately since most of the char-acters are pretty one dimensional, you trulydo not care if they live or die (and I includethe kid in this too). Bryan Cranston andJuliette Binoche are so underutilized, as isKen Watanabe. The lead actor AaronTaylor-Johnson is pretty wooden even inthe action scenes, and the lovely ElizabethOlsen is completely wasted.

The special effects are what drives themovie and it is spectacular. The tsunamiscene caused by the monster is breathtak-ing as is the destruction of the numerouscities. The fight sequences were meticu-lously staged as the creatures square off inSan Francisco for their final battle. TheMUTOs are these monsters that are across between a cricket and a spider, witha little Rodan thrown in for good measure. The sequences where the monsters faceeach other are the movie’s strongest parts. The battles are stunningly done down tothe smallest details. Godzilla actually hasa screen presence; and in many casesbetter than some of the actors. .

If you are a Godzilla fan (or any mon-ster fan for that matter) you will love thismovie. If not, I still fully recommend seeingthis movie in 3D anyway to get the fullexperience, and it also helps distract youfrom the film’s flaws. If you are looking foran escapist picture, Godzilla deliverswholeheartedly. Now let’s see what othermonsters are brought back for the sequels.I am hoping for Gamara.
