Kalzip is an innovation and technology leader in many fields and we can already offer a large range of intelligent additional solu-tions, such as components and methods for saving and generating energy. A current example of this is the development of thermally separated fixing elements of composite materials for Kalzip pro-filed sheets to prevent thermal bridges, the use of which enables us to fulfil the stringent requirements of national and international energy-saving standards.

In addition to the use of solar power, which we have been offering for many years now, “phase changing materials” (PCM) technology is now also of great significance. We recognise that this technolo-gy has enormous potential and are continuously working with this and other developments as the fragility of our Earth’s ecosystem combined with the effects of climate change are forcing us all to be more considerate. It is true to say that erecting buildings all over the world requires significant involvement and we also see it as an opportunity to reduce our individual footprint and develop sustainably planned buildings as intelligent solutions for the generation of energy. After all it is the envelope of the building that is the surface which will enable us to secure part of our future energy supplies and Kalzip is already offering a large variety of fas-cinating and effective solutions in this area.Our ongoing development also means undertaking a critical evalu-ation of building methods past and present. As specialists in build-ing envelopes, we have recently undertaken an intensive study on flat roofing systems which has resulted in the development of a sustainable, aesthetically pleasing system offering optimum pro-tection and potentially rendering the use of membranes surplus to requirements.

We are in constant dialogue with our clients and the exchange of opinions and experiences with architects, engineers and those in the trades is an essential part of our work. This also serves in the continuous development of new products, for example, we have recently introduced a new facade system onto the market, Kalzip FC, a well designed and cost efficient system, which has since prov-en to be a valuable addition to our existing range of façade systems.

The architecture of the future will continue take on more sculp-tural forms than has been experienced before and we will be

faced with new challenges when planning and constructing build-ings. Building materials of the future will need to keep up with these developments.Long-life, light, robust materials will certainly play a big part and an important topic in the future will therefore also be nanotechnolo-gy. Sustainable building means not only that the footprint of a material plays a role, but also that building materials will be used for our very much more sophisticated architecture that will help to guarantee a long lifetime for the building.For us as architects and in the designing of free forming structures it is greatly important to speak to the specialists and manufactur-er’s advisors at an early stage in order to determine the suitability of a product as we need to understand its characteristics, limita-tions and parameters.The planning of Moscow’s Sheremetevo Airport required such col-laboration and so we together with our partners explored the pos-sible products that could achieve the roof areas of the terminal

building, which is reminiscent of a huge bird and had a require-ment to exhibit flowing transitions.After careful searching, it was only Kalzip with its formability and its reliable tightness that could achieve the design without com-promising the integrity of the system and the computer-controlled roll forming technology produced a made to measure terminal roof. We are absolutely fascinated by these technical characteris-tics and Kalzip opened up almost unlimited possibilities for us. Considering the extreme weather conditions in Moscow, with heat in the summer and cold in the winter, we are delighted to have found such a marvellously hermetic system with such a variety of creative possibilities. In fact, we could not have constructed this highly sophisticated building with any material other than Kalzip.

A key task for architects in the coming years will be to continue to develop both sustainable and energy-neutral buildings

and in order to achieve this we need products that have minimal environmental impact and that are also completely re-usable.In designing a building we always seek solutions that are both affordable and sustainable and to achieve this we rely on the assis-tance of our internationally orientated suppliers to provide us with important detailed information and their expert advice.As architects we have clear conceptions about the perfect building envelope and we do have the necessary general knowledge on a large number of widely differing building materials but it is also important that we are well-informed by the manufacturer’s experts on the latest technical developments applicable to building enve-lope technologies. A long life span, very easy maintenance and a combination of insulation, ventilation and humidity control are just as important as the aesthetics. That’s why we have frequently worked with Kalzip and have been very satisfied every time. The biggest challenge for us and Kalzip was a double-curved roof.

For us, the big advantage of this product, alongside all the others already mentioned, is its free formability. Kalzip is a favourite choice of ours, because it makes even, round forms possible in ad-dition to the beautiful shadings that result from the folds. Flowing transitions between façade and roof can be achieved with Kalzip.

The world is changing. New social structures are arising and markets are globally networked. At the same time, our resourc-

es are limited and we must concern ourselves, even more so than before, with saving energy. This equally applies to construction and in particular to the building materials industry: Maximum durability, the greatest possible ecological advantages in produc-tion and application as well as the economy are the most impor-tant aspects for the architectural materials of tomorrow.Sustainability means taking our responsibility towards resource saving construction seriously and doing everything possible to prevent further destruction of our environment. In the planning and implementation of our buildings, it is important for us to use the know-how of suppliers in such a way that we can achieve an outstanding result; aesthetically, technically and economically. For example, well-established suppliers can provide us with impor-tant information about local conditions when building abroad.Today, the skin of a building is usually still evaluated as a rather passive component, which above all has a protective character. It is important that the industry, together with architects and

engineers, is already thinking in the right direction: because these surfaces can be used for more; they are extraordinarily valuable and can provide many additional benefits. From the already widespread use of the building envelope, for the production of solar power and pollutant-absorbent surfaces to the possible absorption of CO2 or the production of hydrogen – there is still a great deal of room for innovation. We have made such enor-mous technological progress in the past 100 years – why should this remain Utopian?

The future decades of building will be affected considerably by the ongoing advancement and speed of exchange of informa-

tion as it is spread further and faster around the globe. This in turn will only serve to accelerate the development of all industries in-cluding architecture and construction. Today we can already freely develop a variety of forms, but the on-going future advancement of technologies and innovative build-ing materials further developments will only allow us to discover more. Improved forms of architectural expression will then be made possible and new trends and broader horizons will be of-fered to us all. Systems for building envelopes must be well-devel-oped: comprehensive, simple and reliable as it is only such a sys-tem that can satisfy the client. However, and in addition to these, a system must also provide straightforward installation and low maintenance together with the all important aesthetics desired from the design.In the early stages of planning, international building suppliers can be of great support to the entire project as they apply their experi-ence and suggestions for the use of suitable materials. We very

much welcome and value this input from the innovative building material sector as it allows us to obtain a better overall result.In the construction of the Asian Games Town Gymnasium, with its unusual and innovative structure, it rapidly became clear that par-ticularly high demands would be placed on the building envelope. Because of its complicated structure, the exact execution of this complex building was a big challenge and perfection was called for in the planning of the support structure, the selection of a suit-able roofing material and the precise planning of the drainage. During the construction period, the complicated spatial structure required exact knowledge of the material, the organisation on the building site and the installation. It was essential here to accurately coordinate the various trades with one another. Kalzip not only entirely fulfilled our high requirements, but also achieved an outstanding result within a very limited timeframe. With Kalzip we had a cooperative partner which, like us, is con-stantly striving for the highest quality. Kalzip has a very well organised structure that always extends as far as the respective building site itself and then there is naturally also the good communication with Kalzip, which helps to prevent problems arising in the first place.Kalzip was introduced onto the Chinese market over 10 years ago. Kalzip is a mature product whose further development can natu-rally only take place on the basis of what already exists. Innovations are conceivable here that offer even further creative possibilities. We can also imagine combinations with other materials here. In our view, Kalzip could actively solicit new products, so that the various results from research and development could quickly find their way into practical use.

Because of the near boundless creative possibilities, durability and aesthetic characteristics that Kalzip provided we were confident that we could fulfil our requirements and so specified Kalzip for the roof cladding material in a natural aluminium surface finish to en-hance the radiating surface of the curved roof on the Sky Dome project in the Supermall City, North Edsa in Manila. We are more than happy with the outcome which is why we have also designed the roof of the follow-up project, the Supermall Bay Arena, an eye shaped structure which will also be brought to reali-ty with Kalzip!

The development and use of new materials and technologies means that the creative process will be dictated less and less

in future by the technical restrictions that shaped architecture in the past. An example of this is the complex, free geometry of architecture that is possible today and the lack of repeatability of structural elements is no longer a problem in the implementa-tion of a building.Construction systems need to support this process of further sepa-rating the creative vocabulary of architecture and technical neces-sities and the technical development of materials and technolo-gies must be accompanied by the greatest possible consideration of sustainability and other factors such as living comfort. In our consultancy, we believe it is important that architects are support-ed in their creative work process by manufacturers through neces-sary research and the resulting new constructional and technical possibilities. Major items for further development can be jointly identified in the exchange between architect and manufacturer.It is important for us today to exploit the greatest possible freedom when designing a building and at the same time to know that the

maximum quality of a building envelope as a protective element and guarantor of the interior quality is ensured. When we select building materials for façades and roofs, it is crucial for us that they offer the possibility to create expressive surfaces and don’t merely represent the separation of the exterior from the interior. Kalzip creates the conditions required for us to develop and implement perfect building envelopes with complex geometries. We have used perforated Kalzip in order to integrate existing buildings into a new urban context and it is through this fascinating building material, we succeed in manufacturing lightness and the greatest possible formal strength of expression, whilst at the same time also coping with the most difficult geometries. We continue to work with Kalzip because of all of these advantages.

In our view, the international building industry will be shaped even more in the coming years by the different cost structures that exist

worldwide. The striving for profit represents a great danger to sustainable construction in particular, because handicraft business-es also are relying more and more on untrained and unqualified employees. Kalzip has chosen the correct method of international quality assurance with Teamkal. Architects and owners pay particu-lar attention to the maintenance costs for a building.Today and in future, building systems must represent environ-mentally-friendly, innovative products. Constant innovation protects against stagnation and imitators. For tomorrow‘s archi-tecture we need durable, flexible systems that are quick and simple to use. Our clients rightfully demand the use of sustainable building materials, but the decision is ultimately always swayed by the cost aspect. Most recently, we have mainly used Kalzip for airport projects. The airport terminals of Tripoli, Sabha and Benghaazi in Libya were equipped with it and a large number of building and hangars at the airport in Doha have also been given roofs made of Kalzip.

We are convinced by Kalzip; thanks to its flexibility it can be adapt-ed to any dimension and it is a contemporary product that is both easy to work with and extremely aesthetic. Sustainability means taking responsibility for any social, economic and ecological loads resulting from today’s lifestyles onto later generations and other countries. Today, each time we take a step, we have to consider what kind of footprint it will leave behind.The energy used in the construction, use and operation of build-ings now amounts to 50% of global energy consumption and thus represents the largest energy consumption sector. It is completely natural for us to drink our coffee, bite into a fresh apple and be pleased with our new furniture. We rarely consider

that the coffee beans come from Brazil, that the apple was hang-ing on a tree in South Africa just a few days ago and that the furniture was manufactured from Siberian wood. Modern means of transport and barrier-free communication make worldwide networked trade possible today.But it’s not only goods – we, ourselves, are able to travel all over the world and communicate with everyone everywhere. These are achievements that we accept as a matter of course today. The Aller publishing house is one of the leading publishing houses in the Nordic countries and these new headquarters

have been constructed at a prominent waterside location in Copenhagen.This plain looking building has a triangular footprint and a slightly curved façade of glass and granite, which boasts 18,000 square metres of office space and a simple yet sophisticated internal foyer area which extends up through all floors to a glazed ceiling form-ing a spacious area for visitors. Glazed surfaces allow a view of the water and surrounding areas of the port and the internal décor of white, glass and light-coloured wood, together with the sparingly used strong colour accents of the furniture and the soft pastel shades of the lights to form an airy, typically Nordic-fresh interior decoration.Designed with an equal measure of care and aesthetics the archi-tects have considered every detail, which includes a view of the building from above via a satellite photograph.

Asian Games Town Gymnasium, Guangzhou, China  亞運城體育館,广州,中国

The sub-tropical Chinese city of Guangzhou, neighbouring cities and surrounding regions played host to the 2010 Asian Games

held in November. A grand total of 70 different sporting facilities were available, a combination of 12 new build and 58 refurbished, to the millions of visitors, sportsmen and women that attended the event.In the planning of the Games, great importance was given to urban compatibility, traffic connections and environmental protection and the subsequent use of the venues also played a particularly large part in terms of the concept of sustainability. All four cities involved were interconnected by a metropolitan rail system allowing 80% of the sports facilities to be reached by underground railway.One of the main facilities was the Asian Games Town Gymnasium. This spectacular building is characterised by amorphous, organic forms and was erected in the south of the almost three square kilometre event site. The windows appear as if they have been cut into the metal skin of the sweeping structure and a construction arranged in the middle of the building provides central access and was given a bright red façade cladding.

With its 8,000 seat capacity this hall was capable of hosting the competitions for the sporting disciplines of artistic gymnastics, billiards and squash. This building was opened up to the public once the games ended and will continue to support both sporting facilities and other business purposes.

This stern yet smart looking administration building is character-ised by the restrained arrangement and colour of the façade.

Horizontal ribbon glazing runs in three slices along the street line but in contrast the side facing away from the street and towards the greener surroundings is more open; with its angled, oriel-like projections. Special care was taken with the façade: Windows flush with the façade and the varyingly arranged rectangular Kalzip façade ele-ments in TitanSilver above the recessed base give the building an air of calm nobility, whose surfaces produce constantly new and fascinating effects.

The Building Supervision Authority in Singapore has for many years maintained its own institute for training within the con-

struction sector; its aim to ensure the highest possible quality of construction and to continually provide training for both novices and experts alike.The BCA Academy emerged from this Institute in 2007 and this new Academy compiled the guidelines for environmentally-friend-ly and sustainable construction in Singapore. The Academy’s own certificate for ‘Green Buildings’ is intended to encourage both owners and planners to save natural resources when planning and building and to create space to enable both healthy living and productive working.The Academy required a base to work from and to provide its advisory and assessment work services, so an existing building was taken, completely refurbished and converted into a ‘Zero Energy Building’. Of course, the same demands were placed on the plan-ning and execution of the BCA Academy that the authority itself places on other buildings in the Southeast Asian city state and therefore a number of modifications were required.

The building was given a new external envelope and supplied with electricity by 1,500 square metres of photovoltaic solar panels, which have the capability of producing approximately 207,000 kilowatt/hours per year and are fastened without penetration and follow the contour of the Kalzip profiled sheets. The unglazed sections of the façades were vertically greened in order to improve the air quality and to protect against excessive exposure to the sun, hence the building owner’s claims to a ‘green building’ are fully substantiated.

This building for a molecular genetic research institute was built on the site of an old military hospital.

The fair-faced concrete base, which was partly given a coat of ochre paint, supports two further storeys that are perforated by ribbon glazing and clad with Kalzip. This structure, with its lightly rounded façade at the top, houses the offices and encloses the part of the building that contains the laboratories.Generous atria, walkways and domed rooflights flood the interior with daylight and the slight kinks in the façade placed demands on the realisation of the building envelope but Kalzip XT in a vel-vety effect AluPlusZinc finish tackled the challenge with ease to provide the research building with a noble yet solid appearance.

The museum, which was founded in the 1960s, boasts a collec-tion of 13,000 works of art. The new four-storey building

encompasses a floor area of almost 14,800 square metres on a footprint of approximately 3,550 square metres. Two basement levels supplement the available space, where storerooms, lecture theatres and conference rooms, a cafeteria and a bookshop are all accommodated in addition to the exhibition rooms for permanent and temporary exhibitions.As the compositional guiding theme of this building, the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki plays with the contrasts of straight structural elements and free-forms, which skilfully entwine with one another to shape the spaces. Functions such as stairs and lifts, or the ventilation, are accommo-dated in sharply outlined, straight volumes; the remaining space is at the disposal of the art. It is freely developed but at the same time withdrawn in its clean white colour, so as not to compete with the exhibits. Outside, too, Isozaki pursues the concept of arranging functions such as entrance and lighting on the rectangular surfaces that

develop organically out of the structure. The traditional Chinese cladding of this building sculpture with slate is reminiscent of the scales of a reptile, thus heightening the impression of an idiosyn-cratic sculpture. However, what is not visible is that the museum was provided with a building envelope made of Kalzip before being clad with the natural stone scales.

Saint Jean de Maurienne is a picturesque town not far from Mont Blanc and the Italian border. The town has been a dioce-

san town since the 6th Century and is considered to be the origin of the house of Savoyen, from which the Kings of Italy came in the 19th and 20th Centuries.France is the land of culture. The arts are nurtured even in appar-ently remote places; there is an audience for music, literature and fine arts. It is therefore no surprise that a modern hall for orchestral rehearsals was built in this small Alpine town, which will also short-ly be connected to the TGV high-speed railway network. Like a musical instrument, this unusual building is also constructed from wood and its design makes multiple references to its sur-roundings and the scenery. Its roof was clad with Kalzip AluPlus-Solar to provide both the energy needs and air tightness desires required for obvious acoustic reasons.

With over 2,000 years of history, Nanjing is one of the old cities of China and during the 14th to 17th Century it was the seat

of the Ming Dynasty created by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. The city, which is situated in a beautiful and famous landscape on the lower reaches of Yangste, offers the visitor many places of interest from many centuries. Today, the old city is surrounded by modern residential and business districts, one of which is the new Hexi District, whose centre is formed by the Nanjing Conference and Exhibition Centre. The architecture of this complex construc-tion is the result of an international competition held in 2006.Eight identical exhibition halls, each with a floor area of 100,000 square metres, were arranged along a slightly winding path. In the centre of this complex, a conference centre was built that holds a general-purpose hall with 800 seats, 27 conference rooms, and a small and a large banqueting hall. The facades of the exhibition halls were given metal claddings and this modern marketplace is characterised by wide overhanging roofs and generous glass areas, which is enlivened by slightly rising mono-pitch roofs.

Together we are stronger – this was the motto for the planning of a ‘health park‘ in Dordrecht in the Netherlands. The area

around the existing hospital (which is to be extended) is being de-veloped as a new district with the emphasis on health care through a joint venture involving the city, the hospital and a private property company. The largest covered sports facility in the Netherlands, with over 40,000 square metres of floor space, was created through the building of the new sports centre. The ‘sports boulevard’ offers enthusiasts, of both professional and popular sports, an ice rink with 800 seats for spectators, a swimming complex with several pools, a multi-purpose hall with 500 seats for spectators and a fully equipped gymnasium. The sports complex is accessed via a central entrance hall, from where the conference and association rooms can also be reached, along with the catering facilities and the multi-storey car park with 160 parking spaces. The architects succeeded in planning a com-pact structure whose various functions are recognisable from the outside. The ice rink with its curved façade and rounded ends,

the large swimming pool with its transparency and curved exterior and the clear architecture of the sports halls form a harmonious structure thanks to the clear organisation of the access routes and the common entrance hall.

The view of the Catalan city of Barcelona as you are coming in to land already puts you in the mood for the vivacious and

lively city: the Mediterranean, a sea of houses and the majestic mountains are fascinating. The airport comes into view – with its new terminal. A slim fuselage with lightly swept-back wings – an enormous Concorde – seems to have already ‘landed’. It is the new terminal designed by the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill. On the site of Spain’s second largest airport, after Madrid-Barajas, he designed a new terminal building for 30 to 55 million travellers per year. A further 12,000 parking spaces, 168 check-in desks and shops are now situated on an area the size of 80 football pitches. These, together with the 50 boarding bridges of the new terminal, have doubled the previous capacity.Once on the ground, the visitor notices the large, gently sweeping aluminium roof areas, which appear to undulate gently like the nearby Mediterranean. They were installed with over 700 solar modules for the generation of energy for the airport.From a sustainability point of view, the architect’s objective was to illuminate the airport (which is situated directly on the coast) with

as much natural light as possible and create high transparency in the interior of the building. Passengers can gaze out over the taxiway, over the sea and over the Catalan landscape.

events centre offers facilities for every kind of event.Due to the venue’s continued success, this extension was con-structed and designed by the British architect Sir Nicholas Grim-shaw who selected the Kalzip TF800R profile for the façades: a product which creates a unique looking surface finish that leads to an unmistakable architecture where the mixture of light and shade though the day’s course of the sun are constantly produc-ing new forms.With such a huge building it is important that visitors do not have to search for the entrance and the porches accentuated in bright yellow project out of the glazed façade clearly pointing the way inside to visitors.Hathaway Roofing Ltd., a member of the team of international Kalzip installation companies (Teamkal), received awards for the ‘Best Product Application’ and for the ‘Best Overall Performing Project’ on account of their outstanding work in the manufacture of the façade.

Shenzen, which borders Hong Kong to the north, has been an especially dynamic economic zone since 1980 and many man-

ufacturers from the electro-technical and telecommunications industries are based here. As you would expect, the city is growing at breathtaking speed and as a result Shenzen is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. Typically, the public of Shenzen use buses for long-distance trans-portation and in order to continue to service this requirement the Futian Transportation Center, a six-storey, traffic junction has been built which also provides connection to an underground railway line. A glazed hall serves as the access route to the bus platforms where arriving and departing buses drive into and leave the bus station over ramps. From here they leave the building in all direc-tions, even as far as Russia. The architectural goal was to create an efficient building that also offered a high standard of facilities. Kalzip was used in the applica-tion of the outer skin of the building, which also utilised a number of perforated profiles to provide the high translucency required in some areas.

This new sports hall with 4,334 seats for spectators was built on the outskirts of Gdyn as the result of an architectural compe-

tition held by the city. The striking feature of this unusual architec-ture is the supporting structure, which swings centrally over the longitudinal axis of the hall and at the same time marks the main illumination zone. The two halves of the gable roof cover the sports hall. The func-tion rooms are arranged around this central hall by a ‘grassed’ ring that is interrupted by several entrances. From the outside the building resembles a shell-like construction made from a combi-nation of delicate supporting structures and a green base, a roof area made from Kalzip and a visible transparent glazed area in the main elevation. The ‘greened’ zone of the structure makes the overall building appear smaller than it actually is as it merges into the surroundings, which are dominated by grassy areas near the edge of a forest.

Curtain up – for the visitors! The world-famous architect must have thought that or something similar when he designed the

façade of the new Grand Canal Theatre.The multiple-kinked and seemingly folded glass entrance façade actually does remind you of a theatre curtain. The new theatre building, with a floor area of 13,500 square metres, was built as the centrepiece of a new district, whose buildings have all been designed by Libeskind. The theatre rises up over the square in a wedge-like shape, revealing the carefully designed Kalzip roof cladding.The concept of turning the theatre itself into a topic is reflected not only by the design of the glazed curtain – the square in front of the theatre, the foyer and the theatre lobby situated on the first floor of the theatre are also stages: stages of self-production, stages of congregation. Large red rods, which light up at night, point the way from the canal over the piazza into the theatre and in this way connect the exterior and interior as a subtle reference to the colour scheme of the auditorium. Having arrived here, you can take your place in a

room where the architecture, although continued, clearly comes to rest. Now it only remains to wait until the curtain opens and the play begins.

Luxury meets sustainable building when you look at this extra-ordinary hotel in the ‘Bonner Curve’ which sits directly on the

banks of the River Rhine.The Kameha Grand Hotel has impressed architects, interior design-ers and its guests in equal measure with its sumptuous styling and colourful furnishings combined with the modern architecture, characterised by metal and glass. The soft ellipse of its silhouette blends perfectly into the natural scenery and the fully-glazed hall of the hotel, with a height of up to 21 metres, is truly spectacular. The two lateral wings of the hotel house the 190 guest rooms and 62 suites. This exceptional building more than meets the requirements of sustainable building. Geothermal energy is used for the heating and cooling of the building as is the concrete core activation for the coverage of the basic load. Floor convectors with a fresh air supply cover the additional requirements.

A double-skin construction was used on 4,860 square metres of Kalzip to act as a weatherproof and watertight lower layer for the cladding of the roof and sections of the facade. A sub-structure was then non-penetratively mounted onto this lower Kalzip layer, to which profiled sheets were subsequently fastened and it was these aluminium composite sheets, some of which were up to 6 metres long, which achieved the smooth, harmonious surface desired by the architect.The project has also received two architectural awards shortly after its opening: the ‘Architecture and Design Award’ presented by the international property trade fair MIPIM and the ‘International Property Award 2010’ where it was chosen as the ‘Hotel of the Year 2011’ by a German hotel trade and restaurant magazine.

Karlovy Vary, located in the ‘heartland of Europe’ in Bohemia, has been one of the world’s most famous health resorts since

the 18th Century. The small city welcomed guests in search of a cure from all over the world, including crowned heads of state and famous authors. In times gone by, those travelling to Karlovy Vary usually stayed for weeks and the journey was often difficult and long. Today, the modern health resort clientele travels to the spa town by air. The architect Petr Parolek developed an unusual terminal building for the city’s airport, which he himself described as a ‘flying projec-tile, a spaceship or a submarine’. Thanks to the conversion of existing older buildings and the new building, around half a mil-lion passengers can now use this airport annually. The building envelope of the elliptical, round new building struc-ture consists entirely of aluminium and invokes associations with aircraft construction.On entering the building the initial impact is the brightness of the interior which appears deceptively dark from the outside. inhabitants, of whom 80,000 are students. A city steeped in tradi-tion, it was founded at the beginning of the 17th Century and is situated in a region where significant oil deposits have been discovered and are today being extracted. The city is also known as a centre of software development.The sports facilities are gradually being renewed and extended for the city’s sports enthusiasts. There are more than 1,200 sports facil-ities, 443 sports halls, 19 stadiums and 17 public swimming pools in the Tomsk region. A new multi-function sports hall with an elon-gated, half-round structure was built at the ‘Kedr’ sports facility.Inside, 100 people can play 30 different sports at the same time on an area as big as a football pitch. During the planning, particular attention was paid to the needs of people with restricted mobility. There are seats for 500 spectators in the grandstand of the multi-purpose hall, which can also be converted quickly for concerts.Large window areas in the facade, which is clad with yellow Kalzip profiled sheets, provide daylight to the 14 metre high hall. Children typically take notice of architecture if it exhibits child-like criteria, but the architecture of kindergartens does not

have to be colourful and wild, and the planners of this new snail shell-shaped building have clear proof of that. This building is rela-tively reserved with its white-silver colour scheme and smoothly plastered surfaces but has been convincingly translated into an elegant, curving piece of architecture.Both the roof landscape created by the dome and the roofs of the conservatory were clad with Kalzip AluPlusSolar in order to mi-nimise energy consumption. The high dome, which is not visible from the outside, surprises you with a generous amount of space on the inside and the angle of the circular roof is ideal for utilising the sun throughout the day.Only in one place does this simple and sophisticated building provide you with any indication of its purpose: Perforated, stylised figures of children decorate the façade above the entrance area. The world-famous Italian design is characterised by the phrase – less is more – this cannot be conveyed early enough.

Parents naturally look for kindergartens close to their place of work if one isn’t already provided by their employer.

Here in St.Georges de Montaigu, two locally-based neighbouring com panies joined forces to create a concept for the planning and running of a joint kindergarten for their employees offering places for 60 children.Great importance was given to environmental-friendliness and sustainability of the construction and it was therefore considered important that all naturally available resources were utilised; such as geothermal energy, rain water and solar power. The photo-voltaic elements used were laminated onto the Kalzip profiled sheets on the gently curving roof, which generates the building’s electricity and hot water supply.The floor plan provides all the typical needs of a kindergarten, with the group rooms opening widely onto the south towards the gar-den areas. The function rooms are housed on the north side and an atrium in the centre of the building provides access to the two

group rooms on each side. Glass, wood, metal and plastered sur-faces create a beautifully rhythmic facade with colourful accents and the equally merry and elegant building appears to wish both children and parents a nice day.

Geometrical terms are typically used to describe buildings, but the Climate House, which was opened in 2009 defies such

concepts with its free-forming design and structure. During the development of this touristic expansion area between the Weser, the old and new ports; a collection of new construc-tions including the Climate House 8° East, a shopping centre and a multi-storey hotel was built. It is beyond question today that the climatic change has been caused by mankind which is now presenting him with a set of new political and social challenges. And with the focus on the causes and the subsequent consequences, The Climate House has opened up a world of experience for visitors of all ages through the appealing, educational and practical presentation of this im-portant subject. The Climate House, which invites its visitors to a journey around the world along the 8th degree of longitude, forms the centre of these new buildings, which has an outer skin made of glass and Kalzip. The steelwork of the façade support structure picks up on shipbuilding motifs and encloses the building.

Handball has a long tradition in Croatia and is one of the coun-try’s main national sports. The world championships took

place here in 2009 in a new multi-purpose hall that was built in theSouth Croatian port of Zadar. The shell-shaped structure of the hall, which bears the name of the most successful Croatian handball player and Olympic champion, was quickly dubbed the ‘Peka’ by the people.A peka is a dome shaped piece of iron cookware which is used to prepare meat and vegetables under hot ashes. As the city’s landmark, the ‘Peka’ can hold anything between 10,000 and 24,000 spectators, depending on the configuration of the internal space.Numerous additional function rooms are available and are at the disposal of guests and the sportsmen and women alike. The roof area of the dome structure is clad with a total of 13,800 square metres of Kalzip profiled sheets.

The pictures were shown all around the world and the building became the epitome of rescue from the forces of nature, when

hurricane Katrina swept across the southeast of the USA as a devastating natural catastrophe in 2005. The city of New Orleans was particularly badly hit and 30,000 citizens took refuge inside the Superdome, the city’s largest building, in order to survive the raging storm outside.The Superdome, which still today is the largest permanently in-stalled dome construction in the world, only suffered minor dam-age to its outer skin. The refurbishment of which has seen an area of 34,000 square metres clad with the innovative Kalzip FC facade system that had just been launched onto the market.A main characteristic of this system is its non-penetrative and flexible installation. Individual panels can be installed indepen-dently without the need to remove surrounding panels, a feature of this system which is highly regarded and valued by architects and clients alike.

During the renovation work, the flat, aesthetic looks and quick in-stallation of the panels were equally as convincing as their storm-proof anchorage. With this new skin the Superdome will be able to survive the next hurricane safely – but it would be better if ‘Katrina’ never happened again.

A new multi-functional sports hall with a floor area of 48 x 24 metres was built in the municipality in East Flanders. The con-

cept of the structure was based on gaining optimum use of the regions natural resources. The sports hall itself is orientated to the north. Above it is a semi-arched roof with two large roofs that extend over the entire length of the hall and ensure glare-free lighting and simple ventilation to the hall.The roof line of the surface, which is installed with Kalzip AluPlus-Solar photovoltaic sheets, runs out towards the south. The roof, which is supported by a laminated timber construction, covers the changing rooms and washroom facilities.During the planning of the sports hall, the focus was on energy-saving construction using natural resources. The compact struc-ture and the intensive thermal insulation go a long way in support-ing this requirement, as does the use of solar energy by means of the Kalzip AluPlusSolar profiles, whose photovoltaic film provides the building with a striped pattern on the roof and an additional characteristic feature.

Singapore – the name comes from Sanskrit and means ‘city of the lion’. One of its biggest problems results from the tight

borders on the peninsula, which prevent the expansion of the city. Hence, the buildings grow increasingly higher and use the scarce resource of land intensively. Situated by a park in a key location the 19-storey office block erected by the Mapletree real estate company also accommodates two cark parking levels in the basement, which are accessed from the south side of the building. The ramp was designed to the spiral shape of the project and in turn set into a transparent triangular structure. Kalzip supplied the translucent, 30% perforated profiles for the cladding of the ramp. When constructing new buildings the building authorities in Sin-gapore are always keen to achieve the best possible results with regards to sustainability and environmental friendliness. An appro-priate certification was also issued for the Mapletree Anson.

This new building was erected on the site of the existing Marne college, in order to offer the school community extend-

ed facilities for sport, tuition, workshops and a refectory. The compact building, with a floor area of approximately 4,300 square metres, has a wide open, glazed, suspended façade to the southwest. The lateral façade surfaces were clad with wood. A roof cladding made of Kalzip profiled sheets lies like a blanket over the entire building and gives it a characteristic ribbed surface that extends down to the ground on the northwest and southeast sides.The sports hall, with a floor area of 1,100 square metres, can be used, not only, as a double hall but can also be quickly converted for the purposes of teaching or events. There are workshops in the basement where pupils are trained in close cooperation with companies. The canteen and additional classrooms are situated in spacious areas on the ground and first floors around a centrally arranged core with function rooms. The aim was to bring the outer grounds, where people congre-

A central theme of the design was to create an atmosphere of both curiosity and social control through encounters and visual contact. The transparency of the building in the yard underpins the aspiration of an open house.

A geometrical illusion in the expanse of the Dutch plain. No matter which angle the building is viewed from, the im-

pact is quite incredible as each façade is designed differently giving the structure its own very unique statement. And yet the architects have also succeeded in creating an astonishingly har-monious, powerful and self-contained building. From one side you see a largely invisible, glazed, three-storey base-ment area with reception rooms, which is protected under a more imposing cuboid structure, home to a series of spacious office ar-eas. The widely overhanging metal-clad building, which is curved in the roof area, lies over the varyingly shaped structure beneath like a protective hand. Viewed from the metal front the three gently rounded basement storeys on this side appear to have been created like a gateway opening. The very specific and economical use of colour, glazed surfaces and metal facades, with a few plastered surfaces, result in new and interesting compositions from every perspective.

The new stadium in the north of Peking was built for the 2008 Olympic Games and is situated directly adjacent to the world-

famous Olympic Stadium. The large circle of the arena and the smaller circle of the auxiliary hall were united under a large, curved Kalzip roof.The lightness and rhythm of sport are reflected in the large structure where freely shaped columns mark the main entrance on the east side of the building.The visitor reaches the entrance of the main arena via wide open stairways. The circular shaped arena itself is enveloped by a fully glazed outer shape, similar in form to an oval solitaire. The rhythm, dynamics and the momentum of the sporting competitions are encapsulated in the design and form of the arena. Steeply rising grandstands and their close proximity to the competition areas create a sense of increasing tension between the spectators and the sportsmen and women. Extensive glazed facades mean the different functional areas are both visible and highly recognisable to the outside world.

The railway station in Newport, South Wales, was originally built in 1850 and largely extended in 1928. Situated in the heart

of the town, the station tracks divided the district into two halves which, over the years, developed very differently: a lively business centre on one side and a quiet residential area on the other.However the station posed challenges to those travelling by train with long distances between platforms and ticket offices and the absence of access assistance for people with restricted mobility. The solution was the need for a new station.The new building connects the two districts of the town by a bridge and two new concourses, improving the comfort for arriv-ing and departing passengers. The northern platform, facing the residential area, was designed for the purposes of commuters whilst the southern platform, facing the business centre, is focussed more towards visitors to the town, passengers changing trains and excursion traffic. The travellers are quickly directed to the platforms by the guidance system passing the station’s amenities en route.

The entire building was erected as a steel structure, prefabricated in parts and installed in its final position by cranes. The use of alu-minium for the cladding of the components madedelicate support structures possible. The curved, rounded forms of the bridge and the two terminals placed great demands on the building envelope. Each profiled sheet was uniquely manufactured for its individual position – economically and quickly – using the Kalzip XT technology.

Travelling by train offers many advantages – none more so than the fact that stations are generally situated right in the

centre of your chosen destination, as is the case with Orleans, the city on the Loire. Each year 2.6 million travellers use the city’s railway station, which has an eventful history. The first building from 1843 was demolished in 1902 to make way for a larger building. The destruction caused during the Second World War resulted in the erection of a new building in 1965, which was extended in 1986 by a shopping centre. Construction of the new station concourse began in 2005; it sym-bolises the ‘undulant’ stream of traffic in the city in the form of a double wave. Although the chosen materials of steel and glass make reference to the famous railway station architecture from the heyday of the railways in the 19th Century, the light and transpar-ent building is perceived as a contemporary, high-quality building due to the shape and use of aluminium. Kalzip was the obvious and perfect solution for the curved forms of the roof. Offices and the passengers’ waiting room are situated in the interior of the hall in a cube made of metal, glass and wood.

Families change and so too do their requirements for living space. With this in mind, modern day family homes are planned

with foresight. Flexibility of use requires flexible, adaptable floor plans, such as those implemented (in exemplary fashion) in the planning of a detached house in Paderborn.The structure of the house can be determined from the outside: two separate wings under monopitch roofs – one used by the parents and the other by the children – that are connected by a clearly defined joint which houses the entranceway and the stairs. The facade was plastered to a large extent and clad with wood at the attic level. Clear, structural statements are set by the Falzinc cassette claddings at the roof line, corner areas and ceiling levels. The cellar and ground floor were built using a solid construction method, while the partially overhanging upper floor was built with timber. Maximum energy efficiency is achieved by the use of an air-water heating pump with solar assistance and controlled, forced ventila-tion with heat recovery.

In 2010, in the district of Brigittenau, the Rivergate office and busi-ness centre was completed adjoining the landmark Millennium

Tower which was built in 1999. The name ‘Rivergate’ refers to the riverbank location and to the form of the building ensemble: two structures open onto the water through an ever widening atrium. Characteristic of the two office blocks, which differ in height, are the freeform building envelopes, which are rounded in each case at the top. With generously glazed facades all areas were provided with differ-ent facilities for protection against the sun and glare, depending on their position in relation to the sunlight and the roof surfaces were clad with Kalzip. A comprehensive energy, ventilation and climatic concept created the required conditions for the Rivergate to achieve its high stan-dards of sustainable architecture and to receive the ‘Green Build-ing’ award from the European Green Building Programme as well as the Gold standard LEED Certificate, the worldwide recognised certificate from the US Green Building Council.

Lifelong learning is on the curriculum for the young people of Bristol attending the impressive and futuristic looking South

Bristol Skills Academy.The design was inspired by the sites former use as an airport which inspired the architects to design a building reminiscent of an air-craft hangar. This new building forms the gateway and entrance building to a site currently undergoing an urban redevelopment master plan where a new hospital, leisure facilities, offices and houses will also be constructed.The four-storey Academy building consists of two sections that are linked by a large spacious central atrium and bridges on each floor connect the two steel framework constructions. Due to the com-plexity of the building envelope design, which required the sheets to curve in two directions, only an individually adapted envelope solution would ensure a successful outcome.This made-to-measure production requirement could only be accomplished by using Kalzip XT and a total 441 individually man-ufactured XT free-form profiles were produced using this roll form-ing technology. Glazed areas appear to have been cut into the

façade, and there are both narrow, rectangular, vertical strip win-dows and round or spandrel-shaped openings for the illumination of the compact structure.The implementation of this complex building envelope required the application of the greatest skills and experience from the engi-neering and installation specialists involved with the project. At Kalzip it also required the collaboration of colleagues from vari-ous countries to work closely with one another to draw on special-ist skills and know-how in order to achieve what was required. Lifelong learning is also the top priority at Kalzip!

A new international airport was built on the site of the original Sheremetyevo military airbase for the 1980 Summer Olympics.

The continual growth of air traffic in the years that followed made extensions necessary. Planning began in 2004 for a third terminal, which went into operation in 2009.The curved roof of this new terminal building is visible from afar. It stretches over the check-in hall and the multi-storey car park (with a fly-over) as a double curved, arched support structure with trussed beams, four-chord girders, glass facades and lenticular trusses.Kalzip was selected for the roof areas of this dynamic structure because it is light and malleable offering the ideal characteristics for a long-life, low maintenance construction.

The owners of the spice factory only turned their hobby into an occupation and established a company for the manufacture

and sales of spices in 2005. By 2010 its huge success had made it necessary for them to construct a new building, which houses rooms for production, administration and also an apartment.The open side of the elongated structure (in a recumbent U-shape) faces to the north and west overlooking a nature conser-vation area whilst the south side, which is clad with Kalzip profiles, backs onto a ‘mixed use’ industrial estate.The roof and wall surfaces merge into one another through the building’s shape and design.The standing seams and the AluPlusPatina finish give the building a characteristic surface that conveys quality and durability. The build-ing, which was conceived as a ‘passive’ house, is equipped with a geothermal system, solar hot water production, controlled forced ventilation and a 600 square metre photovoltaic plant making it as independent of external energy supplies as possible. The Kalzip profiled sheets enable the non-penetrative installation of the solar modules.

For the external façade, the architects chose the new Kalzip FC facade system. Characteristic of this system are the large panels, which provide the facade with a calm and highly aesthetic surface.

Bucharest is the lively capital of Romania – its streets are character-ised by dense traffic and constant traffic jams making accessibility

of a shopping centre by public transport all the more important. Sun Plaza, the shopping centre in the south of the capital city, is situated between two main roads and has a direct connection to the underground railway network. The strikingly designed building canvasses visitors with inviting aesthetics: two roofs extend far out over the main entrance to the shopping mall inviting people to visit the array of shops, restaurants and cinemas inside. Built on 80,000 square metres of rentable space, the ‘Sun Plaza’ offers visi-tors three distinct options: shops for convenience goods, numer-ous international fashion stores and a comprehensive range of entertainment and leisure facilities. 130 shops, numerous cafes and a food court with 1,200 seats in-vite visitors to stay a while. As a special highlight, social and com-munity facilities such as a kindergarten, sports hall, playground and a concert area were integrated into the Sun Plaza. Entertainment is provided by a cinema, a bowling and billiard club and a casino. Both the ‘invisible’ part of the structure and

the striking projections, which are supported by steel columns and can be seen from quite a distance, are formed by a weather-proof roof cladding made from Kalzip aluminium profiled sheets in Titancolour.

Da Lat, situated in the south of Vietnam, is a popular destination for both domestic and foreign tourists due to its mild climate,

lovely scenery and the colourful flora and fauna. The townscape of Da Lat is shaped by the French architecture of the colonial age. The friendly city, also known as the ‘City of Love’, welcomes its 21st Century visitors with an equally friendly and trend-setting new air-port, which was built approximately 30 kilometres away. Nature played an intrinsic role in the design of the building with its ‘happy’ yellow exterior immediately catching the eye of those arriving by bus or car – a reflection of the sunflower that domi-nates the highlands of southern central Vietnam. The architects also considered nature for the design of the facade. A species of pine, typical to the surrounding region, was the model for the mullion and transom structure of the generously glazed facades. The planners were inspired by the silhouette of a dove for the curved form of the roof. For all of its relationships to nature, however, the materials and form of the airport building clearly show it to be a contemporary building, whose yellow roof represents an elegant and zestful

welcoming gesture. The ‘delicate’ support structure of the terminal remains visible from the inside – giving the building a feeling of lightness and transparency. The facades are kept simple and aus-tere; their extensive glazing creates a bright, friendly atmosphere in the terminal building and allows delightful views of the scenery and the hills of Central Vietnam.

Belgium is a federal state that encompasses three autonomous communities, three regions and four language areas. The three

communities are: the Flemish community, the Frenchcommunity and – as the smallest member of the state – the Ger-man-speaking community who live in the east of Belgium, on the borders with Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The Triangle Cultural Centre was built on the site of a former rail-way station in St. Vith, a town of some 10,000 inhabitants situated where the Eifel meets the Ardennes. With more than 600 seats and up to 1,900 standing places, the large hall is the heart of the centre and is complemented by a small events hall, a two storey foyer and a café. Due to the high flexibility of the rooms and their technical equip-ment, concerts of all kinds, conferences, theatre productions, trade fairs or banquets can be held here.Significant to the design of the building is the number three (a ref-erence to the three official languages of Belgium and the location of St. Vith within the triborder region) which is reflected in the ar-chitecture of the centre.

Triangles and trapezoidal surfaces create ‘lively’ facades, which consist of quarry stone masonry, feature wood and glass with Falz-inc, Kalzip’s foldable aluminium with a preweathered zinc surface, forming an ingenious supplement to the roof landscape.

In the city of Chicoutimi, amidst the wonderful scenery of the Canadian region of Saguenay, lies the University of the State of

Quebec. This university has acquired a good reputation thanks to its offerings for science and research, tutors and students – and due to a building stock that fully meets the requirements of the users.The newest building is a sports hall, which was designed and built in a sweeping structure of wood and aluminium. This choice of materials is closely connected to the location where trees grow in great numbers in the huge forests of Quebec – and aluminium represents a key area of research for the Faculty of Metallurgy at the university.Approximately 10,000 square metres of Kalzip profiled sheets were used for the roof of the sports hall, which is used mainly for ice hockey. For sports like soccer or football that are played on the sports field directly adjacent to the hall, stands can be moved in front of the widely open façade to accommodate supporters and spectators.

Copenhagen hosted the 2009 UN Climate Conference, which ended with a minimal consensus. Within the context of this

conference, the roof windows manufacturer Velux presented the Zero Emission House – directly in front of the conference centre.The house, which consists of three modules, was presented as a demonstration to show just how large a potential saving there is in houses: private households currently account for 40% of energy consumption. The house was constructed and developed as a superstructure to be placed on the top of a high-rise residential building whose roofs need to be renovated. A sustainable solution was chosen for the roof of the Velux house: with their standing seams, Kalzip profiled sheets provide the characteristic appearance of the simple, carefully planned house, reflecting the combined commitment of the manufacturers to innovation and to the protection of the climate. tion could not be any harder. For the start of the 5 Oceans, Velux shipped the neutral-energy concept house from Copenhagen to La Rochelle and rebuilt it at the harbour. Information on the single-handed yacht race will be constantly available at the house throughout the duration of the sporting event along with other in-formative events on climate change and CO2 neutral construction.

World exhibitions are always a show of strength. The host countries and cities in particular are called upon to give their

best. Immeasurable effort is usually expended in order to create the framework and tools for the rest of the world. Recently there has been increasing demand to produce sustainable world exhibi-tions, which means also developing clear concepts for the event itself and also for the regeneration or use of the venue after the event has finished.In Shanghai great importance was therefore attached to the devel-opment of post event usage concepts, for the new buildings in particular. Expo 2010 claims to be the first ‘green’ world exhibition. The city, which is fighting large-scale environmental problems, has coined a slogan: ‘Better city, better life’. Trees, bushes and hedges have been planted throughout the entire city. The Expo buildings use state-of-the-art environmental technology: less consumption of energy and water and the use of solar and wind power are the objectives. Part of this planning is also the sea-shell-shaped World Expo 2010 Art and Performance Centre, which

is reminiscent of a UFO and was built on a 126,000 square metre area by the Huangpu river.The most important part of the centre is the central stage, which is surrounded by 18,000 seats. Following the Expo, the building will serve as the ‘Shanghai International Cultural Exchange Centre’. In addition to the large event hall, the building contains areas for clubs, restaurants and bars, and smaller stages for theatre productions.
