Kirkcudbright, the Artists’ town is full of hidden talent. Always an excellent tourist destination, there is no better time to visit than during the popular Art and Crafts Trail.

Now in its tenth year, the trail has gone from strength to strength, with many more venues and quirky things to see and do. You might need the full four days to see it all!

To help you enjoy all aspects of the trail there is the free bus, which runs daily, taking you to venues further away from the old town section of Kirkcud-bright. They are all well worth a visit. A timetable will be available on line or you can see it at venue 1.

Enjoy visiting the artists’ homes, studios and sheds, look at wonderful gardens, and ‘have a go’ yourself. A number of venues will be giving demonstrations and workshops for you to enjoy and get involved in. Most importantly, bring your camera for all those photo opportunities you’ll find round the trail.

At some venues on the trail you’ll find music and refreshments, with some mouth-watering home bak-ing, for when you want to take a moment and relax.

We believe our ‘trail’ has something for everyone, so come and soak up the friendly atmosphere and help us celebrate our tenth anniversary. You will have a grand day out.

It is with great anticipation that we announce the return of Trail Team to Kirkcudbright this summer. Following their preliminary dig the advanced search will centre around the Harbour Square area and the Mote Brae.Recent archaeological digs in the UK have resulted in two notable car park finds, and the emergence of an interesting historical lead in the town has resulted in the Trail Team’s eagerness to continue the dig. The team will produce the DXA results from their initial findings, be sure to come and see the action.

Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Rangers will have practical workshops in paper making and artists charcoal making. We will also be using these materials together to create some great art with everyone’s help. We want to show how natural materials can be used within art and crafts, particularly going right back to the start of mark making on paper. We will be using the artists charcoal to draw and colour with, hopefully on our handcrafted paper. We will recycle old paper to make a paper pulp and combine it with flowers, ferns and other plants to create small sheets of unique paper or other paper products.

While you’re waiting for your paper to dry, why not come inside and see what the Stewartry Museum has to offer. On monday you can get your face painted ‘Bug Style’ by our own artist. Monday 5th August, 11am-3pm, Venue 50.

When we moved here six years ago this 1.25 acre garden was mainly lawn, a few mature trees and some shrubs. After much blood, sweat and tears there is now a large rock garden, gravel garden, mixed perennial and shrub borders and two woodland areas. A large fruit and vegetable area keeps the family almost self-sufficient. The greenhouse is used for

propagating and protecting tender plants in winter, and tomatoes are grown in summer. We like to play around with shape, texture and colour in the garden, always experimenting, always changing things from year to year. A digital camera is our most valuable garden tool – it records successes and mistakes and allows us to remember what each border looked like so that we can make changes each autumn or spring. Kirkcudbright 2000’s Summer Art Exhibition, Kirkcudbright Town Hall, 29 June to 26 August 2013

Designed by Ian and Claire Cameron-Smith, the overall effect of the exhibition will be stunning. The thirty works - some very large - have all been carefully selected to illustrate the key verses in the narrative poem from beginning to end.

Written by Burns in 1790, ‘Tam O’ Shanter’ recounts the experience of a drunken farmer returning home late at night on his pony, Meg. Passing the haunted Alloway Kirk, he witnesses a satanical ceremony in progress. Delighted by the sight of one comely young witch, he foolishly shouts out an acclaim, bringing the proceedings to an abrupt halt. Pursued by the young witch he only just manages to escape by crossing the River Doon at Alloway Brig, but the witch just manages to grab and pull off poor Meg’s tail. Some say that Burns was inspired by a Galloway tale about one Adam Forster, who was also pursued by witches. That story is set around Dalry Kirk, Kirkcudbrightshire, rather than Alloway.

“Tam o’ Shanter in Kirkcudbright” is an exhibition expected to attract the interest of both previous visitors, who have enjoyed the quality of earlier exhibitions, along with those with an interest in the works of Robert Burns.

Tam o’Shanter in Kirkcudbright is the 13th exhibition to be mounted in Kirkcudbright Town Hall. Unlike previous exhibitions at the Town Hall, the paintings in this show are all by one artist inspired by one theme. The artist, Alexander (‘Sandy’) Goudie, has been described as one of Scotland’s leading figurative painters. Born in Paisley in 1933, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art, and went on to teach there before devoting his time entirely to his studio. As a portrait painter his subjects have included H.M. The Queen and Billy Connolly. Inspired by the poetry of Robert Burns, his last major project was to illustrate the poem ‘Tam o’Shanter’ with a series of 54 paintings. The bulk of this collection is now held at Rozelle House in Ayr, under the care of South Ayrshire Council. Kirkcudbright 2000 is very grateful to South Ayrshire Council for the loan of thirty of these paintings to form this exhibition, one not to be missed by anyone interested in the best of Scottish art and literature!

Vote of Thanks We are proud to say that our trail is ten years old, while putting this booklet together we have often wondered how it got to be where it is today. Our unique event has grown steadily over the years from a small two day trail to a four day, something for everyone, grand occasion. It has grown because so many kind townsfolk have had faith in us and give generously of their time and skills, we really value their help, we could not run the trail without them, they are worthy of our thanks.Thanks also to you, the trailers, without you there would be no trail. So many of you come back year after year, we appreciate your comments and ideas. Keep coming, there will be more to see and do in 2014 Best Wishes
