A Letter from the Alumni President

I hope everyone is having a great summer, although I have to admit it is going way too fast considering the long, long winter and the spring we've had. Thanks to everyone who attended our joint meeting/pot luck with the Blue Streak Booster Club in July on Jeff and Lauralee Krabill's rooftop. It's hard to concentrate because the view is so spectacular. Dr. Sanders once again spoke to the group with updates on all the exciting things happening in Sandusky Schools and introduced our new varsity basketball coach, Colin Irish, and other administrators. Thanks to John Schumm we now have SHS alumni shirts available, embroidered, not stamped, see the enclosed flyer for ordering information, and other memorabilia that we'll be selling at the home football games. Fall Levy on the Ballot; Building Plan Modified Sandusky City Schools’ leaders have modified the school facilities plan as a result of feedback received over the summer from various constituency groups and parent organizations.

The cost and the overall design of the building program will remain the same but school leaders have decided to embed the schools within existing neighborhoods within the community. Instead of building two new elementary buildings at the site next to the high school on Hayes Avenue, the schools will now be built on the existing property at both Hancock and Ontario Elementary Schools.

The new modified school building plan will still consist of two elementary buildings; Pre--‐K--‐3 and a 4--‐6, but will be built within two very established neighborhoods. Upon successful passage of a bond issue in November, school leaders envision building a Pre--‐K--‐3 facility for all district students on the current Hancock Elementary School site. When the new Pre--‐K--‐3 building is completed, the current Hancock building will be demolished. The new plan also includes building a 4--‐6 elementary building on the current Ontario Elementary School site and district leaders indicated that once the new 4--‐6 elementary building is completed, the current Ontario building will be demolished. The 3.98 Mill bond issue will cost the average homeowner ($92,843) in Sandusky approximately $0.35 cents a day and 54% of the cost of the entire project is being covered by the Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC). The district is committed to the vision of the Transformation Plan, and the “Building Better Dreams” campaign will invest approximately 4.5 million dollars at Sandusky High School in Science laboratories for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics; and Technology labs for Video Distance Learning for Global Experiences and College and Career Readiness opportunities.

The plan also includes building an Engineering Fabrication Laboratory and modernizing space for an Arts Academy and Mathematics collaboration space at Sandusky High School.

Who Was Your Favorite Teacher – New Submissions

As you may recall, the last newsletter included a list of some of our favorite teachers as submitted to us via Facebook. Since that issue was published, we’ve received a few more submissions to take you down memory lane.

Judy Lewis Corso – (1965) – Favorite teacher – William Carver, homeroom.

He would say “Miss Lewis, are you chewing gum?” I would say “No, Mr. Carver” He would say “Then spit it out, Miss Lewis”

I chewed gum every day for four years at SHS and ate hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes and chocolate cake every day for four years – with a pizza burger on occasion.

Sue Van Dootingh Lindsey – (1973) - Georgia Lehman Machowiak. She could hold your interest the whole class and was an amazing lecturer. Jackie Collins – (1958) - Mr. William Carver – Mr. Robert Reiber

Roberta Collins – (1995) - Mrs. Vargo – She was a very caring teacher. She made going to school fun. I am just happy I was in any of her classes.

Tom Patterson – (1967) – Two teachers who have been an enormous influence on me have been Ben Schneider and Gene Kidwell. Both have supported me ever since graduation and especially since I have been a school board member.

Regina Miller – (1985) – Mrs. Newell. She was always one you could talk to and would help you through any teenage “crisis”, very involved in our education and just an all-around great lady.

Bob Stacey, (1958) – Mr. Shearer, English 4.

Mary Frederick – (1974) – Mr. John Schumm. He put up with me! He was just a great teacher.

Diana Mullens – (1972) – Benoit Schneider, who is now my neighbor, was entertaining and enlightened us in Chemistry; Gary Johnson for sharing his Peace Corps experiences and teaching us Biology and General Science; Mr. Blancke for his fatherly advice and making Geometry fun; Sam Shearer for without his “facts, examples and details”, none of us would have been able to write a worthwhile paper. RIP Sam Shearer and Mr. Blancke. You have all touched many lives.

Edward Lutz – (1956) - I have fond memories of many, but two that stand out are Harold Kaufman for choir and Ellen Lehman.

Kathie Canada Breest – (1968) - Ellen Lehman was my mom's friend and later my very good friend. When I was in college, she even wrote to me on a regular basis. What a beautiful person she was.

Brenda Reynolds – (1985) - Coach Gary Reynolds. I had my Dad for junior year Health Education for one semester. LOL. He went on to teaching 20 some more years in Richardson Texas. Ms. Benninger for Biology was my second favorite.

Denise Keaton Curtis – (1969) - Mr. Carver for History/Government

Julie Cruse - (2000) - chose (in no particular order) Ronald Albert, Kenneth McFarlan, Mr. Brattain, Pam Mellen, Mr. Cope and Mr. Sturdivent.

Lisa Wilson -(1999) - chose Ms. Mellen – she was a wonderful teacher who prepared her students for the next level of education. She challenged each of us to excel to the next level. I appreciated her hard work, dedication and genuine concern for all her students.

Bob Conlin – (1978) - Slammin' Sammy Shearer. The best teacher I ever had the pleasure to have. He was tough but fair and he prepared me for life after High School. His way about the class room was the best by far. R.I.P. Mr. Shearer.

Dana Couch Blumensaadt – (1983) - Mr. Verlin Eash, band director, set standards high and morals high, and he was talented musically.

All-Class Reunion Being Planned – Join the Committee

2015 marks the 160th year of Sandusky High School – which seems like a great reason to celebrate with another all-class reunion. A committee is being formed to explore the possibility. If you’re willing to get involved and help, send an email to [email protected] and she will pass the information on to the committee.

What Class . . .

The Sandusky High Class of 1947 congratulates their member, Audrey Schafer, a resident of Parkvue Community, who on June 24 received the Ben M Herbster Award with a tribute to her efforts by George Mylander. The award is presented to individuals who best exemplify the philosophy, leadership, philanthropic spirit and achievements of the late Rev. Dr. Ben M. Herbster. Parkvue Community is honored to know Audrey as a friend, a volunteer and a philanthropist.

Jim Caldwell (Class of 1948) and Pat Caldwell (Class of 1950) write “Hello from near Dayton Ohio. An update after a year of living here. We are fine and enjoying finally living around most of our children. Have found new and exciting things to do here and taking advantage of them. For those you that remember my mom – she is now 102 and doing very well and seems to be on top of most things. Give us a call if you get this way and we can have a visit.”

John Mears (Class of 1954) On the 1st of May we took off to go to San Antonio for the Reunion of the crew members of LST 854 U.S.S. Kemper County. This is the ship I was assigned to when I first got into the Navy. We have had a reunion every other year since 1996. San Antonio was a great place to have an Armed Forces type reunion because of the many Armed Forces type of facilities available in

Page 8: SHS Hometown News 2014 Aug Page 1 - scs-k12.net Hometown News 2014 August.pdfThe cost and the overall design of the building program will remain the same but school leaders have decided

the area. We visited Fort Sam Huston and the area of the V.A. Hospital which was originally mainly Army but now has facilities for all the services. San Antonio also has 3 or 4 former Missions including San Jose and of course the Alamo. We toured these and found that most have been rebuilt by the WPA in the '30s. We also went to Fredericksburg to visit the Admiral Nimitz Museum and the World War II Museum of the Pacific War (The George H.W. Bush Museum). Being a history buff I enjoyed these very much. The men and their wives that come to these reunions are from many eras of the life of the ship. She was first used in the invasion of Okinawa and then moth balled for a few years and brought again to the fleet for the Korean War. I served in 1960 to 1962 (one of the tweeners). She was then used in Vietnam because the older LSTs were shallow enough draft that they could move in the rivers. She was decommissioned in 1968 after a long and distinguished career. It is a very good group of people just like our Alumni Association.

The Sandusky High School football team of 1966 was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in May. The seniors from that year had won every football game from junior high through graduation, letting local residents bask in the “Sensational Sixties”. Those people were: Dave Agsten, Isavelt Amison, Willie Amison, Dave Bloomquist, Bruce Bravard, Tom Catlett, Jim Collins, Doug Copenhaver, Paul Cross, Bill Deming, George Garrett, Rick Griffith, Tom Jenkins, Arry Keys, Charles Lewis, Hillman Lindsey, Ed Luckett, Pete Manuguerra, Terry McNutt, Vic Malinovsky, Steve Morgan, Mike Nath, Bob Ohlemacher, Tom Pope, Jamie Rausch, Jim Reis, Hollis Shaw, Willie Shaw, Larry Taylor, Tom Wright and Jim Young.

Tom & Cindy Cronk Patterson (Class of 1967) reports that Tom currently is serving as the President of the Sandusky City Schools Board of Education. Their son, Tom Jr. (Class of 1992) is enjoying several successful years as the Head Swim Coach at SHS; daughter Julie (Class of 1994) is a special education teacher at Venice Elementary and the advisor of the SHS Swan Club; daughter Becky (Class of 1996) is a pre-school teacher at Mills School; and son Daniel (Cooter – Class of 1999) married Allison Scally on June 20 of this year. Several of their grandchildren are Sandusky City Schools’ students, so they are pretty firmly entrenched in Sandusky City Schools. They will celebrate their 44th wedding anniversary on September 19. Tom fully restored his 1969 Lyman and enjoys boating. They also still enjoy SCUBA diving especially in the Turks and Caicos.

Sue Van Dootingh Lindsley (Class of 1973) writes “although I have many friends retiring, I’m nowhere near that with three daughters in college. Kelsey is through 4 years of pharmacy school with 2 to go. My twins just finished their second year of college, so still more to go”. Husband Russ Lindsley (Class of 1974) and I are starting to travel more and really enjoying it.

Julie Cruse (Class of 2000) – After earning my master’s in Media, Arts and Sciences, I moved back to the North Coast from Arizona (unlike Heidi Roth Henry (Class of 2001) and David Henry (Class of 2000), who moved from Ohio to Arizona that same year) and took up a position founding and directing the Oberlin College Media Center in January of 2013. In collaboration with my classmate Tiffany Chapman, I founded the Sandusky High School Ronald Albert and Kenneth McFarlan Arts Impact Award in 2010, the same year as the retirement of those named, in celebration of the teaching spirit embodied by Ron and Ken, to encourage lifelong excellence and community enrichment through arts and creativity. We accept donations at [email protected].

SHS Athletic Department Update

This spring began play on the new baseball field. Phase 1 of the project has been completed and home games took place towards the end of this spring. The field looks and plays great. Phase 2 of project will begin late this summer. Phase 2 includes: installation of windscreen, electronic scoreboard, and construction of team dugouts. Come by and see how things look. If you’re lucky you might even see some of our young Blue Streaks playing summer baseball. Thanks once again to all of people and organizations who made it possible.

Please come by this fall and see our freshly painted main gym or stop by the relocated Athletic Department office. The Athletic Office is located at the rear of the building in what was once the supplemental center. Please follow us on Twitter @gobluestreaks or see our schedule of events on the Sandusky City Schools website. www.sandusky-city.k12.oh.us

What Was Your Favorite Activity in High School? Deborah Springstead Brown - Definitely ACappella Choir (1972-75) and Keynotes (1973-75) Class of 1975.

Diane Springstead Cole - Band, ACappella Choir and Keynotes! I was in band all 4 years (1973-77) and really loved marching all the half time shows! It was always fun riding the bus to the away games! I was in girls’ glee my sophomore year (74-75) and then made ACappella and got my robe from my sister, Deborah Springstead Brown, and was in it for 2 years (75-77). Loved the tradition of the robing ceremony, the Christmas concerts and the musicals! Class of 1977.

Debbi Ostheimer Mitchel - Band and Orchestra definitely! Only social life I had in high school and loved it!! Class of 1984.

Sandy Baker Zech - BAND!!!! We had the most fun going to home and away games playing together and made AWESOME LIFETIME Friends...♥ Class of 1982.

Mike Hartman - Besides football, I would say choir & Keynotes, Enjoyed being involved with such a prestigious organization and incredibly talented people. Class of 1969.

Sally Fultz Carter - How about Keynotes? Fancy dresses, special engagements and the musical each year. Let's not forget those hot guys in the wide, velvet lapels and ruffled shirts. Ha! Class of 1974.

David Volz – Dramatics Club. It had a high female/mail ratio. Class of 1973.

Cindy Cronk Patterson – Swan Club – My “big sisters” Carol (1954) and Judy (1956) were in Swan Club when it started. I was part of the scenery in 1956. Competition was intense to “make the club”. I met my husband, Tom Patterson (1967) our senior year when he accompanied one of the soloists (not me). My daughters Julie (1994), Becky (1996) and even ours sons were members. Now my daughter is the advisor and my granddaughters are junior swans. By far my best memory. Class of 1967.

Jackie Collins – I enjoyed being in the Pep Club. Class of 1968.

Kathy Theisen Failor - Drama Club – gave you a chance to stretch yourself and try new things – especially for someone who was very shy, like I was. Class of 1973.

Judy Lewis Corso –– Pep Club, Class of 1965

Julie Cruse – Choir, Keynotes and Bel Choir, Triple Trio, Marching Band. Class of 2000.

Lisa Wilson – Swan Club. I loved being a swan! We had a lot of fun practicing in the freezing, cold water for hours, so we could put on a beautiful show. I have many memories of the shows and the under/overs we did to perfect our dolphin routines. Class of 1999.

Dan Thomas Swimming Award Recipients

David Linden and Samantha Smith, both seniors, were the 2014 recipients of the Dan Thomas Award for Swimming. The award is named in honor of a member of the Class of 1950 that was killed in Viet Nam.

Welcome to New Members

Welcome to our newest members of the Sandusky High School Alumni Association – Diane Sloan Byington and Dennis R. Byington, both of the Class of 1958.

The money from our membership dues is very important to the work of the Alumni Association – not only does it help support our annual scholarships to two graduating seniors, it also lets us do special projects for the schools such as the plantings around the high school.

Although your membership does get you the great “perk” of receiving this newsletter twice per year, the real reason to join or renew is to show support for the community and school that started you on the path to adulthood and what you are now.

So, if you are currently a life member – great! But, maybe you could recruit one fellow alumni to join by sharing the membership application on the outside cover of this newsletter.

If you are an “annual member”, please check your newsletter address label to see if it’s time to renew and give some consideration to becoming a lifetime member so you’ll never have to keep track again.

And, if you’re reading a courtesy copy of the newsletter, you’ll want to sign up now to stay in touch with your alma mater.

Annual dues are just $10 for a single membership and $15 for a couple. A lifetime membership is $75 for a single and $100 for a couple. All membership dues, donations and NEWS should be sent to the Alumni Association at PO Box 2401, Sandusky 44871. You can also email news to [email protected].
