Dear Kappans, Thetans, Educators Rising Members, and Friends and Supporters of PDK,

Since 1906, PDK International has been growing and connecting educators through research, leadership, and service. Building on our roots as Phi Delta Kappa Association, a prestigious fraternity for educators, we have grown into a robust social sector organization dedicated to engaging all educators and transforming classrooms, schools, and systems, so that every student thrives.

Today, PDK International is composed of seven divisions that are united by their commitment to helping educators acquire the knowledge and skills to bring about equity and excellence within their classrooms, schools, districts, and communities. We believe that educators who are dedicated to ongoing learning have the power to shape public education for the benefit of all students.

In a year when the political, social, and educational environment was at times chaotic, PDK provided platforms and resources for local communities across the country to make bold improvements to public education. Of special note, this year marked the 50th anniversary of the PDK Poll as well as the 100th anniversary of Kappan magazine – essential resources for educators committed to applying current research and practice to their work.

We invite you to read through this 2017-2018 Annual Report to learn more about our year of programmatic expansion, guided by our four core values of Social Justice, Engagement, Excellence, and Results. While our work continues to grow and evolve, what remains the same is our commitment to serving educators, transforming systems, and nurturing open dialogue among groups and individuals who are deeply committed to public education.

We look forward to embracing the work that lies ahead of us and learning more from the members and communities we serve across the country. We are deeply grateful for your active participation, continued membership, and philanthropy, which makes our work possible. Thank you for joining us on this journey.

Sincerely,

Joshua P. Starr, Ed.D. Curtis Cain, Ph.D. Sharon Robinson, Ed.D.Chief Executive Officer Chair ChairPDK International PDK Board of Directors PDK Educational Foundation

OUR CORE VALUES Building on our legacy of research, leadership, and service, we are guided by four core values:

Social Justice: We promote practices that seek to achieve social justice and equity in public schools. Educators must understand the history and context of American public education, including institutional racism and discrimination, as well as the moral imperative to ensure equity of outcomes, opportunities, and resources for the most vulnerable students.

Engagement: We partner, engage, and collaborate with other organizations that are seeking to improve public education. To solve complex problems, multiple stakeholders from different perspectives need to collaborate and be part of the problem-solving process.

Excellence: We must hold others and ourselves to the highest professional standards. We adhere to constant continuous improvement efforts within the organization and promote practices that ensure accountability for education professionals.

Results: Results matter, both for ourselves and for public schools. We hold ourselves accountable for outcomes and promote results-based practices that improve public education.

PDK International is a social sector organization for public educators who are committed to improving schools so that all students thrive. By providing professional learning opportunities, targeted networking, and relevant research, we help researchers and practitioners deepen their expertise, elevate their careers, and ultimately experience better results in their work.

We are dedicated to helping educators acquire the knowledge and skills to bring about equity and excellence within their classrooms, schools, districts, and communities. We envision an American public education system where students are supported by exceptional educators who know why they do what they do (what motivated them and what their story is), what they have done that has led to successes and failures, and the research and practices that can be applied to their current context.

WHAT WE OFFER We support more than 100,000 educators who are dedicated to ongoing learning by:

• Providing high-quality content to help educators throughout their careers, including aspiring teachers, practicing teachers, teacher leaders, administrators, and teacher educators;

• Creating physical and virtual experiences that engage educators in activities intended to improve their practice and address pressing issues and challenges;

• Deepening educators’ awareness and understanding of inequities that maintain the status quo; and

• Connecting educators with one another to learn and grow together.

“ I have discovered that my calling is undoubtedly in education. My education from this point forward is not for me, but for my students, so that upon graduating from Dartmouth College in 2022, with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Education, I will be better equipped to serve students for the duration of my career.”

– Caitlin Deerin, 2018 PDK Prosective Educator Scholarship Recipient

PDK ASSOCIATIONGrowing and connecting leaders in education VISION: To cultivate great educators for tomorrow while ensuring high-quality education for today.

PDK members continue to be the backbone of PDK International. Fiscal year 2017-2018 saw us rebuilding our dedicated Membership Team, including the hiring of a new Director of Relationships and Outreach and two new Membership Associates, as well as the addition of a Manager of Relationships and Outreach. In November 2017, we launched our “Membership and Stakeholder Survey,” to seek feedback from members on what they value about PDK membership, what they wanted to see return to PDK, and where they would like to see membership go moving forwards. As a direct result of the feedback we received from this survey, members can expect to see several new initiatives launched in early 2019, including the launch of a new Distinguished Educator level of membership and the introduction of PDK Primers. These initiatives complement existing member benefits such as Kappan magazine, scholarship opportunities, and discounted insurance through TIE.

In addition to this work, we have a revamped focus on connecting with members in both new and old ways. Many members were thrilled to receive the first edition of the Heritage Newsletter in February 2018, giving them the chance to receive a hard copy digest of news and updates from the national office. We collected valuable member stories through our “Member Profiles” survey which will be used to energize and inspire both current and potential members. We are also working on strengthening the connections between the PDK Association and our other membership types (Pi Lambda Theta and Educators Rising), building a pipeline of supports that culminate in PDK Association membership.

PI LAMBDA THETARecognizing outstanding preservice and practicing educators VISION: Teaching is recognized as a challenging and rewarding profession that attracts knowledgeable, innovative leaders who provide an excellent education for all students.

Pi Lambda Theta is one of the nation’s most prestigious honor societies for educators. Established in 1910, Pi Lambda Theta recognizes outstanding students who intend to pursue careers in education. To date, more than 54,000 people have been inducted into Pi Lambda Theta.

This year, we updated our eligibility criteria to allow prospective educators to apply for membership in their junior year, widening access to scholarship opportunities offered by Pi Lambda Theta. In fact, during this fiscal year, we were able to award 50 Student Support Scholarships to future educators. Additionally, with the addition of our new Relationships and Outreach Manager, we were able to offer an even greater level of support to both new and legacy members, deepening their level of engagement with Pi Lambda Theta and PDK International as a whole.

“ As my first year of teaching comes to a close, I am even more eager to continue to make a difference in the lives of my students and the community. As an Elementary School General Music, Chorus, and Drumline teacher, I am truly living my passion and my dream. Many of my students struggle with various social, emotional, developmental, and behavioral challenges, and this scholarship will enable me to pursue a Master’s in Music Therapy from Immaculata University. Once completed, I will be a licensed music therapist and counselor and able to help my students in a more effective way.”

PDK POLLExamining the public’s attitudes toward public schools VISION: As the most trusted, independent source for public opinion about K-12 education, the PDK Poll of the Public’s Attitudes Toward the Public Schools ensures that the voices of Americans are included in conversations about the future of U.S. schools.

2018 marks the 50th year of the PDK Poll, which began in 1969. Over the past 50 years, PDK has asked nearly 70,000 American adults more than one thousand questions about the public schools. This year’s poll was no exception; we asked 1,042 adults 45 questions and shared all the results at pdkpoll.org and through a supplement to Kappan magazine.

EDUCATION PARTNERSHIPSPartnering with system-level leaders for school district transformation and excellence

VISION: Every school system leader demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and mindsets needed to lead change and leverage opportunities through a social justice lens so that all students thrive.

Education Partnerships, a PDK division that launched in fall 2016, works with school system leaders to navigate the complexity of school district transformation and improve teaching and learning through an equity and social justice lens. Our aim is to partner with system-level leaders to help them create exceptional school systems and cultivate an organizational culture of excellence for students, staff, families, and local stakeholders within their respective communities. We seek to support system leaders by helping them engage those most affected in the definition of challenges.

We believe that the planning and designing of solutions must include those most impacted by change. Additionally, we believe that continuous improvement and solutions should be implemented through an adaptive approach that develops mindsets to sustain the work. Our approach to change management engages system-level leaders around six design principles: values, governance, content, talent, resources, and culture. Our goals and actions are based on PDK’s core values: Social Justice, Engagement, Excellence, and Results.

2017-2018 HIGHLIGHTS:

• After 10 years as Kappan’s Editor-in-Chief, Joan Richardson retired from the position, handing the reins over to Rafael Heller

• Teresa Preston became Kappan’s new Managing Editor for content

• Kappan has greatly expanded its efforts to connect with readers through social media; as a result, page views of our website nearly tripled in the past year, from 9,500 in July 2017 to almost 27,000 in June 2018

PDK EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATIONSupporting teaching, learning, and public education VISION: To ensure PDK International is a vibrant and sustainable social sector organization for educators.

For more than 50 years, the PDK Educational Foundation has supported the philanthropic programs and services of PDK International, including but not limited to the annual PDK Poll and our Prospective Educator, Pi Lambda Theta Student Support, and Advanced Degree Scholarship Programs.

This year, we once again saw an increase in philanthropic giving from our generous donors and organizational supporters, enabling us to continue to grow our programmatic offerings. In particular, we saw tremendous growth in our scholarship program. We received 485 applications across the three programs – almost double the number of total applications we received in 2017. Thanks to the support we receive from our donors, we were able to award 119 scholarships this year, totaling $168,950. Most applicants (76%) were members of Educators Rising, and nearly 50% of that population expressed financial need.

Support from volunteers, members, and donors is critical to a robust and competitive annual scholarship program. As the demonstrated need continues to grow, we count on you to help us invest in the future of education and provide support to aspiring educators across the country.

“ As a Child of Deaf Adults (CODA), I am taking every chance I have to share my story. This year, I can proudly say that I founded the first American Sign Language (ASL) Club at my high school where I teach lessons on how to sign and the importance of the deaf community. As an homage to my parents, I am enrolling in the special education program at Illinois State University, with the goal of teaching deaf kids.”

“ The California State University program I direct, and my current doctoral research seek to make meaningful contributions that will help increase the number of students who complete their college degree.  My current research includes examining the overrepresentation of Latinos in mathematics remediation and exploring the ways we can increase support for our students so that more can complete their degrees in a timely fashion.”

“ In struggling with dyslexia, school was extremely difficult. But through my teachers and tutors who helped me along the way, I was able to become who I am today. This selfless attitude has inspired me to become a teacher: to help students with dyslexia just as I was helped.”

– Ted Molkentin, 2018 PDK Prosective Educator Scholarship Recipient
