A PORT Elizabeth police consta-ble who was gunned down togeth-er with a colleague while on dutyin Sakuba Street, Veeplaas onMonday morning will receive afull military arranged funeralnext week Thursday.

Constable Thandiswa Bambiso(33), a mother ofthree, was gunneddown in the earlyhours of Mondaymorning while pa-trolling the streetswith ConstableMongezi Mqina(35).

Mqina was alsoshot and criticallyinjured.

After the shoot-ing a critically in-jured Mqina man-aged to drive to a satellite police sta-tion in Zwide.

He is recovering at Netcare Green-acres Hospital where he was admit-ted in a critical condition.

“A military funeral means that po-lice will be in full military uniformand in charge of the proceedings dur-ing the funeral on Thursday nextweek,” said Police SpokespersonCaptain Andre Beetge.

At the time of going to press, thedetails of the venue of the funeral orthat of the memorial service onWednesday next week was still not fi-nalised.

The news of the attack on the twopolice officers was received withshock and anger by SAPS manage-ment in Pretoria. In a statement is-

sued to the media by the acting na-tional commissioner of Police, Lt.General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi, hesaid the continuous attack on policeofficers cannot be disregarded.

“Communities need to stand reso-lutely opposed to such criminality,”said Mkwanazi, adding that the menand women in blue will remain unde-terred in their quest to ensure safetyand security.

Masixole Myosana was bur-ied from the Reformed Presby-terian Church in Chief PotoStreet in Motherwell on Satur-day.

“The youngest of the five,Avuyile Tshabalala (18) wasburied yesterday (Tuesday) af-ter a short service at his XolileStreet home in Motherwell,”said Motherwell Rugby Foot-ball Union PRO ManduleliNgqoshana.

“The funeral of Arthur Peterswill be in Grahamstown today,”said Ngqoshana, adding thatpeople who want to attend thefuneral must be at NU1 stadiumin Motherwell by 6 am.

scheduled to take place in an ar-ea known as KwaNoncampanear King Williams Town onThursday, whilst AnelisaMvulela’s funeral will be in Ch-alumna near East London, alsoon Thursday. Transport isavailable at the same place at 6am.

Easter Splash Festival startingthis Friday, April 6 to Monday,April 9.

The launch of the 22nd Festivalwith four-days of fun – a flagshipproject for Nelson Mandela Bayas a tourist attraction with itsmix of local, national and inter-national artists, including theBrazilian Fiesta Group Napal-ma, Zonke Dikana, Andile B andDj Cleo – was held at Hobie beachlast Wednesday.

“We are proud to host onceagain the largest water sportsfestival on the African continent,which reinforces our position asthe Watersport Capital of Afri-ca,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Ex-ecutive mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile.

Further more, it being an out-door event and weather depend-ant, things are at this stage alsolooking up for the weather alsoplaying along. On Monday

THE Splash Festival 2012 is not without controversythis year with most of the concern revolving aroundthe late appointment of the service provider to organ-ise the event as well as how it benefits the disadvan-taged.

Some local businessmen aired these concerns at lastweek’s launch of the Splash Festival.

The fact that there is only one week to promote andmarket this huge entertainment event on the NelsonMandela Bay calendar, which is in its 22nd year, didnot go down well with local music promoter DannyMongo.

“Themarketingof theevent isverypoor. It isnotdoingjustice to the more than R3 million spent by the Munici-pality on the festival. Nor is it fair to Go Big Events, thecompany that won the tender, to organise the event. It istoo short notice,” said Mongo of Eyethu Promotions.

Nelson Mandela Bay Events Director Seki Mandabaagreed that their appointment was on short notice but

blamed the change in the national tender regulationsas specified in the Supply Chain Management for thedelay.

“Otherwise the appointment of the service providerand the launch of the programme would have startedas early as October 2011,” said Mandaba.

Mandaba said the event went out on tender in Janu-ary. Go Big Events satisfied the adjudicators duringmeetings held from February 22 and was awarded thetender.

Local Businessman Andile Siqwepu, who repre-sents Nafcoc (National African Federated Chamber ofCommerce), said he wants to know how the festival andthe money spent on it by the municipality benefit thepreviously disadvantaged black communities. Go BigEvents Director Greg Moses said they have includedlocal artists in the event from across the metro andensured that the Community Chest – which representsabout 96 charities in the metro – is the beneficiary.

“We are not satisfied. We cannot continue to hold eventswhich only benefit a few at the expense of the poor in thetownships,” said Siqwepu.

Saturday’s highlights include the 6Point Zero Band, Transformers, Shadesof Blackness, Chapter 3, Eric & FriendsBand, Shoelace, Jay, DJ Cleo & TeddyBears, and Point 5.

There will also be a Little MissSplash pageant and a body buildingcompetition. Steff the Hypnotist willbe performing on the second stage be-fore the talent search.

Sunday takes on a carnival atmos-phere, with Brazilian Group Napalmabringing the sounds of the Rio Festival

from 9.45pm.On the main stage from noon will be

acts such as AWOCD Minstrels, Steffthe Hypnotist, Dejavu Dance Group,Faye Gatley, Charmaine Allison, CecilPeters, Afromix, Mojazz, and ErnieSmith and Band. Circus acts will thrillthe crowds at the second stage fromnoon.

Entertainment on the Monday in-cludes the Stone Band, Stuart ReeceBand, Zonke, and Bellino the Magician.

Local singers will once again be giv-en the opportunity to appear on stagein a Karaoke open mike session from aquarter to one in the afternoon. The funwill wind down on Monday fromaround 3.15pm.

Mayor Wayile emphasised thatsafety and security will be a top prior-ity. “We will be clamping down hardon drinking. The sea, crowds anddrunkenness do not mix,” he said.

NELSON Mandela BayTourism (NMBT) Chief Ex-ecutive Mandlakazi Ske-file will join top executivesin the metro in a drive tocollect shoes for needychildren on Tuesday, April10.

This will be part of the cele-bration of InternationalBarefoot Day which is an ini-tiative aimed at creatingawareness of the daily expe-riences of poor children inunderprivileged communi-ties around the world.

Skefile will be walkingbarefoot in a campaign called“One Day Without Shoes” tocollect shoes. She will bejoined by Protea Marine Ho-

tel General Manager, DanieSmit.

Skefile,whowholehearted-ly supports the initiative, be-lieves that it will give tour-ism stakeholders an opportu-nity to plough back resourcesinto the communities andschools around them.

“We would like to encour-age our members and tour-ismestablishments inNelsonMandela Bay to heed the callfor donations, so that togeth-er we can build our city. I alsoencourage companies to takeit up as part of their Corpo-rate Social Responsibility,”said Skefile.

JOY was written all over the facesof the KwaMagxaki and nearbytownships residents as NelsonMandela Bay Council Speaker Mar-ia Hermans officially opened theKwaMagxaki Customer Care Cen-tre last Friday.

The Centre, at the corner of Raloand Uitenhage Road, is the fulfilmentof a long-time dream of municipalward councillors Andile Mfunda andMbongeniBungane. It cost themunici-pality just under R6.5 million to build

and about R300 000 to furnish and is the14th Customer Care Centre built in themetro to bring services closer to thepeople.

“We (the municipality) have beentasked to provide services to the peo-ple. We understand that the citizenrymake the municipality. Without thecitizenry, there is no municipality,”said Councillor Hermans. With thisgesture, added Hermans, the ANC-ledmunicipality was building friendshipsand lasting relationships with the com-munities it was serving. Residents willno longer need bus-fare to go to the CityTreasurer in town or Cleary Park topay for municipal accounts, check ac-

counts, apply for debt relief and to ap-ply for the Assistance To The Poor Pro-gramme (ATTP). Residents fromKwaMagxaki, Veeplaas, KwaDwesi,KwaDwesi Extension, KwaNoxolo andJoe Slovo will benefit from this centreand Councillor Hermans told them to“refuse to be sent to town because offi-cials cannot assist. Hermans also urged the residents touse the centre and protect it jealouslyagainst vandalism and theft. She alsotold officials employed at the centre toprovide excellent services in the spiritof Batho Pele.

This grade 10, Westering HighSchool pupil – who is causing a stirwhenever he performs – discoveredhis love for poetry and Hip Hop whenhe was ten and started writing songsat the age of 13.

one of us. This album is my time toshine,” said Azi, who was signed forhis debut album by Koloni Musik.

His 10-track album was recordedat Zonke Bonke Studios in Mother-well and production was done byBonke Bunu and Bulelani Gxavu.

Azi aka Azz Veritazz a name takenfrom his first name Azi which meansknow; and Veritas – a Latin wordmeaning Truth; believes he is an en-tertainer more than an artist.

He said he sings in the school choirand that he is a messenger of thetruth. The young star, whose otherpastime is football, features his fa-ther Nceba and little sister Zipho onhis album.

BARRY Levin Investments contacted acouple of the schools in the Port Elizabetharea recently to see what their needs wereand where they could be of assistance.Thandi Gcakasi of Elumanyanweni PublicSchool, situated in Zwide was the onlyprincipal who responded, requesting helpwith the replacement of their photocopierand fax machine, and was rewarded withmore than he asked for.

According toCindyRobson,manager ofBar-ry Levin Investments, they paid a visit to theschool.

“We found that their needs were far greaterthan just a photocopier and fax machine. Noneof their ablutions were in working order andthe 300 odd students were having to use buck-ets for toilets,” said Robson.

According to her the situation was desper-ate, both from a hygienic and humanitarianpoint of view.

“The principal also mentioned that childrenwere leaving the school becauseof theablutionsituation. The problem had arisen from van-dals breaking into the school atnight and steal-

ing the pipes and fittings rendering the ablu-tions useless.”

Robson said the school grounds were terri-bly over-grown and unfortunately someonehadbeenusing the school grounds for dumpingrubbish.

Barry Levin Investments contacted a localgarden service who cleaned out the rubbishand neatened up the grounds and CurriePlumbers were appointed to reinstate 4 of theablution blocks consisting of 16 toilets. Securi-ty gates were installed on all of the ablutiondoors to ensure vandals could not gain accessagain.

“Recently our staffwent to the school tohandover the ablutions. We were welcomed withmuch aplomb. Angie Jones of the Departmentof Education was there and there were signsup at the entrance to the school welcoming Bar-ry Levin and thanking us for our assistance,”said Robson.

According toher the children sang songsandmany of the parents were also there for thehand over. “We were made to feel very wel-come.” There was a small ceremony where wealso handed over a couple of bales of toilet pa-per and tried to stress the point of using thisas opposed to newspaper in the toilets.

“We found that their needs were far greaterthan just a photocopier and fax machine. Noneof their ablutions were in working order andthe 300 odd students were having to use buck-ets for toilets,” said Robson.

According to her the situation was desper-ate, both from a hygienic and humanitarianpoint of view.

“Theprincipal alsomentioned that childrenwere leaving the school because of the ablu-tion situation. The problem had arisen fromvandals breaking into the school at night andstealing the pipes and fittings rendering theablutions useless.”

Robson said the school grounds were terri-bly over-grown and unfortunately someonehad been using the school grounds for dump-ing rubbish.

Plumbers were appointed to reinstate 4 of theablution blocks consisting of 16 toilets. Securi-ty gates were installed on all of the ablutiondoors to ensure vandals could not gain accessagain.

“Recently our staff went to the school tohand over the ablutions. We were welcomedwith much aplomb. Angie Jones of the Depart-ment of Education was there and there weresigns up at the entrance to the school welcom-ing Barry Levin and thanking us for our as-sistance,” said Robson.

According to her the children sang songsand many of the parents were also there forthe hand over. “We were made to feel very wel-come.” There was a small ceremony where wealso handed over a couple of bails of toilet pa-per and tried to stress the point of using thisas opposed to newspaper in the toilets.

They introduced a competition for the chil-dren to enter by colouring in a picture aboutkeeping the ablutions clean and the winnersof each grade will receive a prize.

“We were encouraged by the reaction to ouroffer of help. As this project will be on-going,we would like to extend an invite to all our ten-ants who feel they would like to get involvedto offer their assistance. The school needs helpwith big projects like, glazing, office equip-ment, more burglar proofing, JoJo containersfor the garden, help with starting a veggie gar-den and much more,” said Robson.

ACCORDING to the World Health Organisa-tion, 60 000 women and children in South Afri-ca are victims of domestic violence everymonth.

The country has the highest incidence ofdomestic violence in the world – and those arejust the cases that are reported.

“I believe the statistics could be as high as100 000 per month,” said Lindsay Ziehl, seniorsupervisor of Yokhuselo Haven in Port Eliza-beth, which provides safety and shelter forabused women and their children. “So manypeople don’t report domestic violence.”

Since opening its doors 22 years ago, the ha-ven has assisted thousands of women andchildren. It is a fitting tribute that they areonce again the beneficiary of the SPAR Wom-en’s 10km Challenge in Nelson Mandela Bayon Saturday, May 5, an event last year sup-ported by 11 000 participants.

SPAR Eastern Cape marketing manager,Martin Webber, said a race mainly supportedby women and children benefiting a haventhat supported abused women and childrenwas “the right fit” for this community-fo-cused event.

“We feel the haven provides the right carefor these women and children.

“As abuse is generally kept under wraps,an event the size of ours allows the haven tobe made known to those who may be in needand not know where to turn.”

Yokhuselo Haven runs two homes – Pros-pect Hill Crisis Centre in Central, where vic-tims stay on a short-term basis, usually justa night, and a safe house at a secure address,sheltering families who are in danger.

The crisis centre is often the first port ofcall for survivors of domestic violence. “Weare open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Wenever, ever close,” said Ziehl.

Along with providing a safe environment,which includes food, clothing, a bath and abed, the crisis centre supervisor will arrangefor statements to be taken, and for counsel-ling and evaluation by a social worker, whomay recommend that the family be relocatedto the safe house. There they are providedwith accommodation, food and clothing, andalso receive assistance with protection or-ders, ongoing counselling and help in findingemployment. Women often stay at the safehouse for up to three months at no charge.

“It’s so important to us, knowing that thecommunity and a retail giant like SPAR sup-port non-violence against women and chil-dren. Each time SPAR puts on this race, I amsure it makes an impact in all communities,”said Ziehl.

“It’s also heart-warming to see schools in-volved in the race – and understanding whatthe day is about. The fight against domesticviolence starts with our children.”

Ziehl said the race provided an “informingplatform” for the haven. In the five years thatit has been a beneficiary, women from allcommunities have approached the organisa-tion directly after the event to give talks ondomestic violence.

“This information needs to be out there, itneeds to be said,” said Ziehl.

IF anybody knows what it takes toget to the top in sport it is SouthAfrican Protea netballer ZaneleMdodana from New Brighton.

Having reached the highest levelof participation in netball, Mdodanadecided to share her expertise andexperience with her local communi-ty.

This inspiration gave birth to theVision Girls Netball Academy,which at present is a group of 25 as-pirant netballers from various loca-tions in the Nelson Mandela Metrowho are currently receiving compre-hensive training in basketball, fit-ness and life skills.

Mdodana believes that some ofthese girls have provincial and evennational capabilities.

Mdodana’s passion for netball andher plans for a netball academy cameto the attention of the Corporate So-cial Investment arm of The Board-walk Casino and EntertainmentWorld and they have enthusiastical-ly supported Vision Girls since it be-gan in early January 2011 by supply-ing kit, as well as playing and firstaid equipment.

NELSON Mandela Bay has in-cluded 20 more boxers whograduated from amateurs toprofessionals at SoqhayisaHigh School in Motherwell atthe weekend.

The 20 were part of the 42boxers that came up for thesparring session and gradua-tion test led by Boxing SouthAfrica (BSA)Director ofOpera-tions Loyiso Mtya and BSA Lo-cal Service Provider MthunziMapitiza.

“We are so excited becausethere were a few more whiteboxers that passed includingtwo heavyweights,” Mapitizasaid, adding that with the three

heavyweights already in theirbooks, the division is going tobe much more exciting.

“We saw a lot of raw talent.Natural talent with ability, butwe could not find schooled box-ers,” said Mtya. Explaining,Mtya said he has yet to see box-ers who fight according to thebasics of the game - boxers whoknow the ABC of boxing, whocan stand, throw a jab, one-twoand use the parameters of thering to defend themselves.

“That, unfortunately we didnot see. We saw boxers who arenot well-schooled to fight ac-cording to Olympic style inwhich computers are used toscore fights. I think, we needboxing specialists back in ourgyms,” said Mtya.

Mtya however agreed withMapitiza about the hype andexcitement brought by whiteboxers, especially heavy-weights inSouthAfrican rings.

“Historically, white boxersbring crowds to the fight ven-ues. They bring unity and addan excitement to the game,”said Mtya, adding that in Gau-teng there is a visible growth inwhite boxing fans numbers“because many white boxersare coming back to the game.”

Mapitiza reminded the 20graduating boxers includingthose who want to renew theirlicences to take the annualHepatitis B and HIV tests in or-der to register with BSA as ac-tive boxers from 1 April.
