Inclusive Boccia Project Walford and North Shropshire College created a project to develop participants maths, English and ICT skills through the participation and involvement of Boccia sessions and competitions.

Objectives:

To host a series of taster sessions to develop knowledge and rules of the sport To host an event planning workshop to explain the structure of Boccia competition including health and safety, risk assessment, equipment, scoring systems and recording tools To effectively organise and manage Boccia competition including organising fixtures, refereeing, measuring and recording results, taking photos and analysing performance through observations before discussing findings and viewpoints To use the relevant data and results to develop maths, English and ICT skills of learners through additional tasks and scenarios

Inclusive Boccia continued..

Outcomes of the Boccia sessions:

Teamwork – participants worked together to safely organise the room to create a suitable environment to host their boccia competition.

The learners all participated in the boccia competition, which was competitive, good fun and educational.

Leadership - The learners took turns to referee the games, develop their self-awareness and application of the rules.

Embedding Maths & English - The referee’s had to measure the boccia balls as a way of scoring the game. This often took precise and specific measurements to work out the winner of each game.

Through observational analysis, the learners took notes which were later used to analyse performance. This process helped develop the learner’s tactical awareness and understanding of the sport.

Embedding ICT - Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint were used to record and present the results and league tables.

Many thanks to Benji Evans from North Shropshire College for providing this information.

Shropshire Launch Year of Physical

Activity

“Everybody Active Everyday” The UK is 20% less active than it was in 1961, and if current trends continue, we will be 35% less active by 2030. To address physical inactivity as a major health risk, Shropshire’s Health and Wellbeing Board has made 2015 the 'Year of Physical Activity ‘.

A launch event was held at the Trinity centre on 28th April. Organisations were asked to assess their current and potential future contribution to the physical activity agenda to create a shared physical activity strategy.

Everybody Active Everyday provides the evidence base for actions necessary to create a culture shift to embed physical activity in the fabric of society so being active is ‘the norm’. This involves all sectors of society (professionals , providers, commissioners, health, social care, business, education, sports and leisure, transport, housing, planning).

Click here for the Everybody Active Everyday recommendations

Children and young people need to engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day to stay healthy click here

Sedentary behaviour (time spent sitting) is a separate health risk to inactivity. Sitting for more than 4 hours each day doubles the risk of heart disease and is linked to a range of health issues sendentary behaviour

This is a one off event that will be held at Shrewsbury Town Football Club on the 28th May at 6:30pm. We have invited a very talented speaker to travel to Shropshire to share experiences about ‘Growing Your Club’. Svend Elkjear has helped develop hundreds of clubs across the country and has helped clubs to attract new members, retain existing members, grow revenue, increase the social life of the club, increase media coverage and introduce new revenue streams. This is a great opportunity for clubs to learn from experience and embed some of the ideas into your own club. It will also be a chance to understand what other local opportunities are available to you This workshop is being provided by Energize for just £10 per person. Book your place here.

Working with Parents

Do you work with parents to raise the issue of physical activity? The BHFNC has developed a new webpage to help support practitioners working with parents and carers to raise awareness of the importance of their children being active from birth. We have brought together resources designed for parents with children under five, that are available from other organisations all in one place. Early years practitioners can use these resources as a starting point for discussions with parents and carers around physical activity and provide them with practical tips and ideas to promote physical activity at home. The leaflets included contain information on tummy time, play and active travel. For more information visit www.bhfactive.org.uk/workingwithparents

Reducing sitting time in primary school students

The National Institute for Health Research Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care East Midlands healthy schools project was set up to work with schools to develop, implement and evaluate a ‘toolbox’ of strategies for teachers to use to break-up or reduce the sitting time of primary school students in the classroom.

The BHFNC will be contributing to this project by assisting in the recruitment of school stakeholders to the project research network, the development of the evidence-based teacher ‘toolbox’, and the training and professional development of teachers implementing the ‘toolbox’.

The first phase of this project is using stakeholder participation (i.e. focus groups/interviews) and involvement (i.e. members of advisory groups) to develop 'toolbox' resources to be piloted in East Midlands primary schools in the 2015/16 academic year.

For further information or to register interest in your school becoming involved in the research project please contact Dr

Ash Routen at: [email protected]

National Partner Statement on ‘Coaches in Schools’

Several National Partners have collaborated to release a statement relating to the use of ‘Coaches in Schools’. Sports coach UK, Youth Sport Trust, County Sport Partnerships and COMPASS state their belief that investment in PE and school sport should ensure a long term change in the quality of teaching and learning. Investment should also maximise the contribution of PE and school sport to whole school standards.

The National Partners believe that coaches should play a supportive role to enhance PE and sport provision by improving teachers' skills and confidence to teach and delivering additional clubs during and beyond the school day.

Two-thirds of primary school children below recommended fitness level

A new report has found that two-thirds of primary school-age children are falling below the recommended levels of fitness for their age group. The report, entitled Challenging Inactivity, found that just over a third (36%) of 5 to 7-year-olds were at an adequate level of fitness, falling to 32% and 33% for 8-9 and 10-11-year-olds. The youngsters were assessed by carrying out the Activity Challenge - a series of tests created to assess various factors of fitness including stamina, agility, co-ordination and cardiovascular endurance, to give a good indication of fitness and physical literacy. Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that children spend 60 minutes a day being physically active - yet only 21% of boys and 16% of girls achieve this.
