Program of Studies Guide
1--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Peabody High School 2020--2021 Program of Studies Guide
The Program of Studies Guide is intended to give parents and
students a brief description of the courses and learning opportunities
offered at Peabody High School. The selection of courses is very
important. It can determine the college or university students will
attend, the type of career graduates will have, and students’ overall
enjoyment of high school. We encourage everyone to take a great deal of
time to plan academic schedules.
Availability of classes is determined by need as students
register in the spring semester for the following year’s courses. Please
use this resource throughout the year as a reference regarding
graduation requirements, curriculum offerings, various policies and
expectations and requirements of the course. NOTE: Courses may not
be offered due to budget constraints, lack of student interest, or
unavailability of teachers due to the overall schedule demand.
If you have any questions about your son’s or daughter’s
schedule for next year, graduation requirements, or college admission
requirements, please contact me. I also ask that you share your
opinions about our course offerings and overall educational program with
us. We welcome the opportunity to talk with you about Peabody High
School.
Sincerely,
Sunni Cooksey
School Counselor

2020-2021 REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS
As a student enrolled in Peabody High School, you are given the opportunity to select coursework each
spring for the following year. It is important to involve your parents in the course selection process, that
you make certain you meet the prerequisites, and that you keep high school graduation requirements
and career objectives in mind.
This guide is designed to aid in making appropriate choices by providing brief program and course
descriptions, prerequisites, and other information related to this process. In order to complete
registration successfully, you are urged to follow the steps identified below:
1. READ the Program of Studies Guide carefully.
2. REVIEW the list of graduation requirements and determine which requirements have been met
and which courses need to be taken next year. Consider which need to be repeated because
of lost credit.
3. TALK to your parents and teachers about course selections and appropriate academic levels
(standard, honors, or advanced studies) as determined by classroom teachers.
Standard: These courses are designed for in-depth instruction that challenges, but is
suitable, for all students.
Honors: These courses are designed for self-motivated students who wish to pursue a more
challenging curriculum while in high school.
Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit: These college-level courses are designed for highly motivated
students who wish to pursue potential college credit in high school through Dyersburg
State Community College, the University of Tennessee at Martin, as well as TCAT.
4. SELECT courses that will correspond to or complement your goals for the future.
Course selection represents a commitment on the part of the student and parent to complete the
schedule of classes chosen; however, requests for schedule changes will be considered for the
following reasons:
Scheduling error (Ex: request English IV and receive English III);
Incorrect course sequence;
Failure to complete a prerequisite course or requirement;
Graduation or college requirement omitted from schedule;
Duplicate course;
Credit already received for course/course completed during the summer;
Blank period on schedule
As you choose your course selections, make sure you meet the prerequisites for all selected courses and get all
parent contracts signed, if needed.
If a Course Request Form is not returned with all the necessary requirements completed, the counselor will make
selections for you based on class availability.

2019-2020 Peabody High School CTE Electives
6--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Peabody High School 2020--2021 Program of Studies Guide
ADVANCED COURSES
Honors, Local Dual Credit, Dual Enrollment, and Advanced Placement Credit:
The administration and faculty of Peabody High School feel a student’s academic success is directly
related to correct placement in courses. Incorrect course placement may result in poor performance
and frustration for all parties. Peabody High School has developed a contract of course expectations
for Honors, Local Dual Credit, Dual Enrollment, and Advanced Placement (AP) Courses and we require
a teacher’s signature of recommendation for these courses. Additionally, students and their parents will
sign off that they understand by registering for these courses, the student is committing to a rigorous
educational experience and is willing to put forth the effort necessary to succeed in the class. The
contract indicated that students will not be allowed to drop the course, even if the course adversely
affects their GPA. Contracts will be provided to parents after students indicate they wish to enroll in
these courses.
Advanced Placement This is a nationally recognized program by the
College Board. Excellent study habits and a strong
foundation in specific disciplines are necessary for
success in AP courses. AP courses will provide college
level instruction in several areas that help prepare
students for the rigorous coursework encountered in
college. Each May, students will take the
corresponding AP exam that is written, administered
and graded by the College Board. The score on this
exam will not affect a student’s grade in the course. AP exams are $94 each that is required to be paid
for by the date of the exam. Students who are on free or reduced lunch are eligible for a fee waiver to
test at the cost of $23. We do work with families to split the AP Exam cost into payments. Students who
do not pay for and/or take the AP exam, will not have quality points added to their semester averages.
Students with a significant financial need may be eligible for an exam fee reduction. Students can talk
with the counselor for more information.
During the 2020-2021 school year, Peabody High School will be offering AP Human Geography for
freshmen. Successful completion of AP Human Geography will satisfy a student’s World History
graduation requirement. We will also be offering AP Psychology to 10th-12th grades.
