Note:For previous AB Sciex models up to and including API5000, AB would state in their manuals that Zero-Air OR Nitrogen can be used for SOURCE GAS. This meant that you could operate an API LC/MS/MS with a single nitrogen-only gas source.
For the newest AB Sciex models API5500, API4500 and the Triple TOF 5600, AB SCIEX recommend only Zero Grade Air to be used for SOURCE GAS (Gas 1/Gas 2) when operating a Nanospray Ion Source. When using UHP N2 with this ion source, there is an increased risk of corona discharge, which can damage the emitter tip. However; if customer is using the DuoSpray™ or Turbo V™ or PhotoSpray ion source, they can still use UHP N2 for Gas 1 and Gas 2.

N/A*
*NOTE: Above LECO Pegasus Modulation gas requirements are as stated in LECO’s manual. However; actual testing carried out by Peak at LECO’s Test-Lab in South Africa confirmed that:
1. Hot Jets actually do not consume more than 10 LPM each2. Additional 100 L/min of compressed air for oven cooling is not required for operation. It only
speeds up the system cool-down time between runs, but has no effect on instrument perfor-mance. The system automatically uses the Hot-Jet air/N2 flow for oven cooling when the Hot-jets are not in use. The 20 LPM as supplied by the Genius 1052 will suffice for this purpose.

Please note: some Shimadzu LCMS Instruments such as the LCMS2010EV require 110 psi input pressure for optimum operation of the instruments gas flow controllers. 100 – 116 psi range is recommended by Shimadzu as acceptable nitrogen operating pressure, but at the lower end of the scale (100 psi) the flow controls will be slower and less effective, hence the preference for 110 psi.
The Genius1022 or the NM32L can be offered for Shimadzu LC/MS; however note that NM32L will need to be con-nected to an external compressed air supply with a minimum outlet pressure of 125psi in order to increase nitrogen output pressure up to 110psi.

Typical settings, as recommended by Thermo do not exceed 25 L/min, however, at max gas settings with HESI probe, nitrogen flow requirement was measured up to 40L/min, 100 psi. Please note; Thermo state that these settings are unlikely to be used for real analysis as they are not optimum and would degrade the signal for any given sample. Verify with customer.

NOTE: When sizing a nitrogen generator to supply both Mass spec instruments as well as Evaporation equipment, please keep in mind that in some cases, with high N2 demand evaporators, it may be more efficient and cost effec-tive to offer a separate NM**L and CNMG**L generator.
If you are adding the evaporator flow rate to the NM**L capacity, also consider the added purge loss through the membranes.(Purge loss = 120 L/min per membrane)
In the majority of labs, Evaporation equipment is only used intermittently, not continuous. With a separate CNMG**L generator, the unit will only have a demand for compressed air when the evaporator is in operation, therewith preventing waste of compressed air.Furthermore, as the CNMG unit has fewer membranes than the NM**L equivalent, it has a significantly lower purge loss, and therefore places less demand on compressed air supply.Ultimately this will result in more efficient and cost effective operation of the existing compressed air system, or it may enable you to offer a smaller capacity compressor for labs with no house-air supply.

• For the Infinity 1034, it may be possible to supply more than 4 x API instruments at the same time, as long as the total curtain, source and exhaust gas requirements do not exceed the total capacity of the generator.
• Standard LCMS (ALL OTHERS) are calculated on a maximum requirement of 30L/min for each instrument.
When sizing an Infinity 50** system for a variety of instruments with different gas requirements, please add up the total gas requirement for each of the instruments.
It is recommended to leave sufficient margin when sizing the generator to make sure the generator does not continuously run at its maximum flow capacity and leave some margin for potential future additions.
• For multi-instrument set-ups including Evaporator equipment, please see comments on previous page.

GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY GENERAL APPLICATIONS NOTES:• Capillary and packed column carrier gas flow rates are variable for all GC’s, mainly depending on the column
size, the type of gas and the type of injector.
• The standard flow rates are shown below, but please note that for SPLIT/SPLITLESS INJECTORS carrier gas flow rates have to be individually calculated based on the operators’ maximum Split Flow Rate. Split Vent flow rates up to 500 cc/min are possible, therefore the hydrogen generator should be appropriately sized.
PLEASE ASK CUSTOMERS FOR MAX SPLIT FLOW RATE AND ADD 20CC TO THAT FLOW TO GET TOTAL CARRIER
GAS USE!
• When calculating total required gas flows, take into account that clients may be operating dual columns in the GC-oven, and each GC instrument can have up to three detectors.
• Hydrogen can often be used as an alternative to Helium as carrier gas in most GC’s, depending on the detec-tor and the specimen to be analyzed. For Carrier Gas, hydrogen has to be very dry, therefore the Precision Hydrogen Trace is the preferred generator model. PH range generators should only be used with an additional moisture trap in the gas stream.
• Hydrogen may react with compounds in the specimen that are in the same thermal conductivity range as hydrogen. ‘False peaks’ a.k.a. ‘ghost peaks’ will occur on the Chromatogram. Also, a chromatographer has to select the correct column stationary phase for use with hydrogen, as the gas may react with components in certain types of stationary phase, which will ‘look like’ hydrocarbon contamination.
• • Trace levels of moisture and oxygen in the carrier gas decompose the stationary phase inside the GC-column,
therefore; all GC manufacturers recommend installing Moisture, Oxygen and Hydrocarbon traps on any GC gas line, even if the source gas is already very pure. In the event of a leak occurring on the gas supply line, the traps will ensure that ambient contaminants do not enter the system.
• • > A hydrocarbon-trap does NOT remove methane from nitrogen carrier/make-up gas. For total hydrocarbon-
free nitrogen you need a catalyst to remove CH4 (Methane). The Peak Zero-Air and Zero-Nitrogen generators feature a catalyst.
• Stainless steel or copper tubing is recommended for GC gases. Do not use nylon or Teflon/PTFE tubing as they are permeable and allow impurities to enter the gas stream.
• For combination N2/Air generators; only offer ANG-range generators if clean, dry air is sufficient. For GC appli-cations that require Zero Air (Hydrocarbon-Free Air) in combination with Zero Nitrogen, please offer the Fusion 1010 model, or separate ZA + NG units, as the ANG-range does not produce zero air
• Gas purity requirements for GC vary depending on the ‘limit of detection’ the chromatographer is looking for. In the case of Trace-detection (0-1 ppm) only Ultra pure/ Research grade gases should be used (99.9995% - 99.9999%)
