DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the Peer Mentor position is to assist new Multicultural Student Services first time freshmen & transfer scholarship recipients with a successful transition to the UMSL campus community; by introducing students to different events on-campus, coordinating one-on-one meetings with students, and serving as a referral agent to mentee’s. Mentors take the responsibility of assisting students by providing academic and personal peer support. Mentors are role models and have to be willing to share their academic experience and success.

    first time freshmen & transfer scholarship recipients with a successful transition to the UMSL campus community; by introducing students to different events on-campus, coordinating one-on-one meetings with students, and serving as a referral agent to mentees. Mentors take the responsibility of assisting students by providing academic and personal peer support. Mentors are role models and have to be willing to share their academic experience and success.

    Requirements: Peer Mentors will be selected based on their leadership, communication, and

    interpersonal skills, and academic success. To be eligible for employment applicants should satisfy the following requirements: Enrolled and completed at least 30 credit hours and in good academic standing. Maintain a 2.8 cumulative GPA or higher. Understand and abide by UMSL Student Conduct Policy and regulations. Initiate and maintain regular contact with Mentee(s). Coordinate one-one-one meetings with Mentee(s). Promptly and accurately complete regular contact time sheets. Demonstrate strong communication and leadership skills. Demonstrate an ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds. Commit to serving 3-5 mentees for one academic school year. Meet with mentee(s) on a bi- weekly basis (minimum). Attend all mentor staff meetings and trainings. Introduce and educate Mentee(s) about UMSL resources and cultural activities. Must be attentive to mentee(s). Strong critical thinking skills. Keep program coordinator informed on meetings with Mentees and any concerns that

    may arise.

    Hours: Flexible- Mentor is responsible for scheduling meetings with Mentee(s) Hours Per Week:

    8-15 hours per week

    Hourly Salary:

    $8/hr
