The Power of “The Alliance”

Peers Helping Peers: More than a Motto Local history organizations formed “The Alliance” in 1991 to work together to raise the level of professionalism in the field and advocate for local history issues in Minnesota.

Your membership helps The Alliance work for you and more than 500 other local history organizations in the state. Our combined voices bring attention to our work and help fund our missions. See a few examples of our accomplishments below.

Join us today! You’ll connect with your colleagues and learn how to tackle your latest pro-ject. You’ll save money on supplies through our collective bargaining power. And you will stay informed about opportunities and legislation that affects our field. We have a member-ship level that meets your needs. See Membership structure on the opposite page.

CMS and WEB HOSTING PROJECT

NETWORKING and MUTUAL AID

LEGACY STRATEGIC AGENDA

For years, many local history groups have talked about find-ing a cloud-based Collections Management System (CMS) that could be customized to fit Minnesota’s needs.

MALHM took the lead in finding a solution and won a Legacy grant to find a shared system. By working to-gether, MALHM members will save costs on webhosting, training, and updates. The new software will also allow for future expansion and data sharing capabilities. The project is currently being tested by a pilot group.

Taking the lead on a software solution Taking action for the local history field How can history groups meet the needs of schools? What are some ways history museums can tell the stories of new immigrants and other minority groups? How can the Legacy grant programs continue to have transparency, operational excellence, and enduring value?

Any of these issues would be too much for one muse-um to take on, but Legacy Strategic Action teams will examine each of these issues and come up with re-sources and ideas that can be used by anyone in the state. With a Partnership grant with MNHS, MALHM is administering the program and hired consultant Pat Koppa to coordinate the work.

ADVOCATES FOR LOCAL HISTORY

MALHM began with the mission of advocating for small and local histo-ry groups and we have stayed true to our roots. Not only do MALHM Board Members serve on state-wide committees affecting history policy (HRAC, Minnesota History Co-alition, LSA), but MALHM also monitors legislation, updating its members and advocating for the local history community with letters and phone calls to elected officials. We also participate in History Matters Day at the State Capitol.

If you work for a local history organization in Minnesota, chances are you work alone or are among volunteers. With a MALHM membership, however, you can tap the knowledge of colleagues at more than 500 local history groups statewide.

Learn from your peers at workshops and the annual conference. Join the Curator or House Museum Affin-ity Group. Meet others in the field and know that ad-vice is just a phone call or email away.

Organization memberships ($25 for all-volunteer organizations, $50 for organizations with paid staff) get the same great benefits as individuals, plus a public listing on our website and a significant savings on Gaylord Archival products. Organizations also save big money on conferences and workshops, getting the member rate for each person registered un-der their email and payment! Send your whole team to the conference or a workshop and multiply your savings.

NEW this year! We also added a Business membership ($100 annual dues) for those companies who do business with local history organiza-tions and want to stay informed about the field with our newsletter.
