2 A Word from Our Pastor

Dear FBCP Faith Family, October is the time of the year when we renew our com-mitment to the D&D Challenge and enlist new participants. This stewardship campaign began in October of 2015 as a way to in-tentionally reduce our church indebtedness and at the same time strategically raise disciples. Since its inception three years ago, more than $1,000,000 has been given to the D&D Challenge, which remember is above and beyond the giving of our tithes and offerings for the overall budget of the church! Thank you for your consistent generosity! The D&D Challenge donation is divided using the 80/20 principle – 80% of the money given goes to remove debt and 20% of the contribution goes to raise disciples. When the 80% ($802,806.82) is added to the mortgage payment financed through the church budget, plus other direct contributions made to remove debt given throughout the year by various individuals, the end result is that our indebtedness has been reduced by nearly $2 million in three years! We began with a debt of $7.3 million and we now have a debt of $5.4! To God be the Glory. In addition, over that same three year period we have given $200,701 to missions. Last year alone the missions committee helped us identify 12 mission partners that we were able to help fund and this year we will see nearly 400 people on the mission field participating in one of our short-term mission trips! On October 28 you will have the opportunity to renew your commitment or perhaps enlist for the very first time. During the morning worship services we will place those commit-ments before the LORD in a wooden chest. In the weeks leading up to October 28 you will hear me share a report card for the D&D Challenge from this past year. A commitment card will be found in the bulletin during those weeks. Consistently over the last three years, you have given approximately $25,000/month ($20,000 to reduce debt and $5,000 to raise disciples). My chal-lenge for us is to increase the number of participants to 100% of our faith family. If that were to occur then $25,000/month might become $35,000/month or $50,000/month. The more people who give, the more opportunity we have to make an impact, and the faster we see our debt de-crease and our disciple-making increase for the glory of God. Please pray with me regarding your level of commitment this upcoming year. It is not a question of should you give but how much should you give, and it’s something you and Jesus need to decide. Perhaps the LORD has blessed you so that you can give an additional one time gift or increase your monthly contribu-tion. As always, thank you for your generosity and faithful stewardship to the LORD. I love you! Your Pastor and Friend,Daven

unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” Guard your mouth so that disagreements do not turn into personal insults, raised voices or mocking tones. Focus on the problem and not the person.

James 1:19-20 reminds us that “everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.” Rather than focusing on getting our point across, we should be listening to the other. Before responding, use reflective listening where you repeat back to the other what you believe they said. Then you have opportunity to share

Conflict is inevitable and at some point in our life we will all find ourselves in a situation with another person that is difficult to resolve. Conflict may be a normal everyday occurrence for some but for others conflict may only occur occasionally. Working through conflict requires skills that not all individuals possess. The use of conflict resolution skills can make a tremendous difference in the quality of a relationship.

There are many skills to resolving conflict but here are just a few. The scriptures provide suggestions on how to overcome conflict. Taking that knowledge as the foundation for resolving conflict is the first step to resolution. Ephesians 4:29 tells us “Let no

your side. This back and forth exchange offers equality and the opportunity for all individuals to feel heard.

Use “I” statements as opposed to “you” statements. “You” statements can put anyone on the defensive, so immediately conflict results. “I” statements reflect how you are feeling and that you are taking responsibility for your own emotions rather than placing blame on the other.

Finally, get in the habit of using a “24 hour” time out rule. If you cannot discuss the problem without it escalating into a crisis, call a time out. Both partners agree to table the discussion but come back together within 24 hours when cooler heads prevail.

While working at a shoe store in downtown Truro, Nova Scotia, I noticed a little boy standing on the hot-air register outside the bakery shop next door in his bare feet, trying to keep warm. I was unsure whether to invite the boy into the store, or

just what to do with him, when a woman came by. After a few words with the barefoot boy, she brought him into the shoe store. She bought him new shoes and heavy woolen socks, for which he tried awkwardly to thank her. “Are you God’s wife?” he asked his benefactor.

Taken aback by the question, she took some time before reply-ing, “No, son, I’m just one of his children.” “Well, I knew you must be some kin to him,” he said as he thanked her again and ran out the door. -Zelda Cornish

Are you God’s wife?

5 Activities/Outreach MinistriesAre you willing to sponsor a child to play basketball? We have had several families needing financial help to be able to play basketball this year. The cost for a child to play is $75. If you are willing and able, we would be so grateful to be able to offer these families a scholarship to allow their children to play. Any amount you are able to give would help these families.

Will you commit to pray for 100 days? We are seeking 100 people to pray for Upward for 100 days. The prayer time commitment ends on February 3rd- the day of our Awards Ceremony. We will present the gospel and are praying for a great harvest. You can pick up a prayer guide from the Welcome Center.

Also, if you are interested in serving on the Upward Ministry Team, we still need concessions workers, coaches, assistant coaches, referees, clock operators, scorebook keepers, and greeters. Contact Donnie if you are interested.

You can still register for the 2018-2019 Upward Basketball/Cheerleading season by going online to http://registration.upward.org/UPW66910 or by picking up a paper registration packet from the church offices. The price is $85. Evaluations are October 1, 2, and 4 from 6 until 8:30. We will begin practices on November 5th. The first game will be December 1st and our end of season awards night will be Sunday, February 3, 2019. -Donnie Sisk

Operation Christmas ChildRemember to pick up your OCC boxes at the desk in the Gathering Area. Our Missions Committee has furnished these boxes, making it even easier than ever for us to par-ticipate in the shoe box ministry. Fill your boxes with the suggested items on the brochure at the desk and remember to add the $9.00 for mailing. You may place the mon-ey directly into the boxes or make your donation online. If you choose to do it online, you will be able to track your boxes and know where it/they went. How exciting!
