  • Pellet Boilers

  • Pellet stovesExtra;ame are an Italian company that have been making pellet stoves since

1996, and there are now over three hundred and :fty thousand Extra;ame

pellet stoves installed across Europe. Some of the models are designed to be

installed inside the house and have a glass window so you can see the

;ames. Other models are designed to be installed in a utility room or

    external boiler/plant room.

Wood pellets are made from untreated sawdust. A pellet mill forces the

sawdust through a series of holes. The sawdust gets very hot as a result and

this melts a substance in the wood called lignin. It is the lignin which binds

the pellet together and gives the outer layer a slightly shiny :nish.

Wood pellets are clean, take up less space than logs, are easier to transport

and their quality is more reliable.

The pellets are held in a hopper which is part of, or near, the stove. An auger

moves the pellets from the hopper to a combustion crucible where they are

burnt in a highly controlled manner. The feed rate of the pellets is controlled

by an on board computer and a fan blows air directly into the crucible which

means that the pellets are burnt hard and fast with a very good supply of

oxygen. This is the best way to burn wood and this, coupled with the fact

that wood pellets are very dry, means that these pellet stoves burn at very

    high e9ciencies, often over 90%.

The boiler models then pass the hot gasses up and down through a series of

tubes inside the boiler, which transfers nearly all of that heat into the water.

The non-boiler models have a fan which actively blows hot air into the room.

Unlike a woodburning stove a pellet stove is automated. The stove turns

itself on and o8 and you can program it just like your normal oil or gas boiler.

Various safety features and cut outs are, of course, built in as standard. On

the boiler models these include pressure sensors and temperature sensors.

There is even a remote control.

  • Pellet supplyYou can choose to buy pellets by the bag, the pallet or have a hopper

that is :lled by blowing the pellets in from a truck through a large

    hose.

Wood pellet supply is now well established in the UK and you should

be able to arrange a secure long-term contract with your supplier.

Whilst it is easy to connect a pellet boiler stove directly to an existing

heating and hot water system, they are also ideal in combination with

an accumulator tank or heat store. This provides a place to store heat,

allows the stove to run e9ciently at full output, lets you make use of

other renewable energy sources such as solar thermal and allows you

to connect up to under;oor heating.

Solar thermal hot water is the ideal partner for a wood pellet heating

system because the solar panels or tubes provide your hot water for

washing and bathing in the summer, and your pellet boiler stove

supplies your heating and hot water in the winter when the solar

output is lower. The boiler models are designed to give little heat to

the room and so are a viable option for all

year round operation and for use in

    highly insulated houses.

System design and installationPellet stoves are a straightforward and simple

replacement for oil or gas boilers. Unlike other forms

of biomass, they provide low carbon heating that is

as easy to use for the householder as a conventional

boiler. This is the reason that pellets are the wood

    heating of the future.

The pellet stove would be ?tted by one of our

recommended installers who have completed our

pellet stove training. The installer will also be able to

provide the yearly maintenance. Please check with

us for an installer in your area.

The supply and installation of a wood pellet boiler

stove only attracts a 5% VAT rate, meaning that you

save 15% on materials and labour. Government

grants are also available for the MCS registered

    models.

INFOBOX LigninTrees have two transport systems; the xylem and the phloem,

and in a sense they play the same role as our system of veins

and arteries. The phloem carries sugars produced in the

leaves through photosynthesis, to feed the cells in the rest of

the tree. The xylem takes water from the roots upwards to

higher parts of the tree. Lignin is what makes the xylem

    waterproof.

INFOBOX Solar accumulator tanksThis Akvaterm accumulator tank is highly insulated and so loses very little heat. The tank provides space

heating for your house as well as domestic hot water for washing and bathing, all from the one tank. This

domestic hot water is supplied at mains pressure throughout the house via high recovery heat exchange

    coils in the tank.
