The location of the first IRONMAN 70.3 in Greece, provides an ideal base from which to explore part of this glorious past. Pylos: History, Authenticity, beautiful views The summer at its best version! Pylos lies in the southern entrance of Navarino and spreads over St. Nicholas in the little “valley” between the hills, with Neokastro towering over it. This picturesque town of 2,500 residents, enchants with its beauty, both locals and visitors. Pylos is known for the famous Naval Battle of Navarino, historic castles, warm hospitality, and beautiful beaches.

Tour Itinerary Navarino Bay. Our first stop is the gorgeous bay of Navarino, where the last significant battle of wooden sailing ships in the history took place. The famous Navarino Battle! Then we head towards the picturesque town of Pylos which is protected by the island of Sphakteria.

Neokastro the invisible castle We will walk around Neokastro’s ruins, which is one of the best-preserved fortresses in Greece. It is built on the rocks, at the south entrance of the harbor, and it was constructed by the Turks in 1572. Inside the castle there are ruins of the Gothic Church of the Transfiguration, which under the Turkish rule was converted into a mosque and then again into a church. Our professional guide will share with us all the secrets and legends of the place, and we will find out how this castle had a key role in the process of the famous Battle of Navarino. The beautiful Pylos We will have some free time to enjoy a coffee, without losing sight of the beautiful crystal blue water and share more stories about this amazing place. The beauty of the quaint fishing villages, the endless olive groves and the mountain trails, are perfect for a beautiful pictures’ compilation of scenic landscape in the Western Messenia.

The way back On our way back, the bus can drop you off either at Costa Navarino or at the unique seaside Ammothines beach-bar restaurant (optional) where you can enjoy a delicious meal and relax at the beach. Built over centuries-old sand dunes and sandwiched by the white lilies of sand, Ammothines welcomes you to a unique getaway trip of smells and images. Ancient Messene: A place of significant importance Where the history of the ancient Greek civilization lies! Ancient Messene lies in a fertile valley approximately in the center of the Regional Unit of Messenia, south of Mt. Ithome. A day trip to Ancient Messene, will make your day! It possesses not only sanctuaries and public buildings but also imposing fortifications, houses and tombs. A city that has never been destroyed or covered by later settlements. This city is a spectacular archaeological site, a UNESCO monument that it is perceived as a must-visit place!

About the city The city of Ancient Messene was founded in 369 BC by the Theban General Epaminondas (after the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC, which resulted in Spartan defeat and the establishment of the Theban Hegemony). It became the capital of the free Messenian state following a long period (about four centuries) of occupation of the Messenian territory by the Spartans. The walls that surround the city are 9 km long and are used to protect the city from all directions, except from the Northeast, where Ithomi stood as a natural fortress.

Our guide will share with us all the stories of this magnificent place and we will walk through the theatre, the Arsinoe fountain, the Agora, the Vouleuterion and one of the most impressive ancient stadiums ever discovered. The restored columns of the gymnasium, the palaestra and the Heroon around the stadium set a truly unique scenery. After visiting the museum, we will enjoy a traditional lunch at a beautiful restaurant just above the site. Methoni: History, castles, winery

& wine tasting The “eyes of Venice” in the Mediterranean! Methoni lies on the south east side of Messinia, at the first leg of the Peloponnese peninsula. A little town full of history. A day trip to Methoni will travel your senses away! Tour Itinerary The town of Methoni A visit to the unique Castle of Methoni which is perceived as one of the most important and most beautiful castles in Greece. It was built by the Venetians after 1209 at a strategic location, on a rock penetrating the sea, and is separated from the land by an artificial moat.

Nestor Palace The best preserved of all Mycenaean palaces! It's described in Homer's 'Odyssey' as the court of the mythical hero Nestor, who took part in the voyage of the Argonauts and sent 90 ships to fight in the Trojan War. In the Palace there is a central building, a Throne Room and a large Hearth, the king’s and queen's quarters, the so-called "megaron", the storage rooms, the interior courtyards, an accounting and archive room, and finally the auxiliary spaces. Nestor Winery We cannot end our trip to Methoni without visiting the local vineyards. The well-known Nestor winery will please our palate with some fine wine tasting!

Ancient Olympia: The birthplace of the Olympic Games A journey in the glorious past of Greece! Ancient Olympia, a place where history of 4.500 years blends perfectly with pristine nature. An amazing mix of ancient historical sites and modern conveniences. The birthplace of the Olympic Games where Zeus, the god of the gods, was worshipped and the Games were held to honor his glory! A must-visit place which will travel you back in time!

Tour Itinerary Ancient Olympia We will walk through the Altis, also called the Sanctuary of Zeus. There, used to be a 12m. tall, gold and ivory statue of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world; the statue was destroyed in the 5th century AD, but today you can still admire the famous Hermes by Praxiteles.

The Olympic Stadium-Olympic Games The Olympic Stadium is one of the most essential archaeological sites in Greece. This is where the Olympic Games were held, dedicated to Zeus. We will go through the stadium which was built in the 5th century BC. In 2004 when Athens hosted the Modern Olympic Games, the stadium came back to life, when 1.611 years after the last Games took place there, there was a reenactment of the shot put.

Archaeological Museum of Olympia One of the principal museums of Greece! The museum houses discoveries from the surrounding area, including the site of the Ancient Olympic Games. The collection includes objects produced and used in the area from prehistory to its time under Roman rule. The principal pieces in the museum are Hermes and the Infant Dionysus (attributed to Praxiteles). The extent of its bronze collection makes it one of the most important in the world.
