Pelton Turbine Experiment

Purpose To determine the efficiency of the energy conversion in a Pelton turbine.

Design of the Experiment The efficiency of the turbine is obtained by measuring the available waterpower and the torque applied on the shaft of the turbine.

Measurement Systems Individual variables • Available head, H – pressure gage • Discharge through the turbine, Q – triangular weir • Temperature, t – thermometer • Applied torque, T – mechanical brake • Rotational speed, n - tachometer Data reduction equations and results

Measurement Procedures • For a given pressure head on system, measure the temperature of fluid (for

density determination), the head on the turbine, and the discharge through the turbine

• Gradually apply friction on the shaft of the turbine and measure rotationalspeed and the torque on the shaft

Data Analysis • Determine the fluid density • Calculate the efficiency of the turbine • Compare the obtained efficiency with reference values
