The Conservancy is pleased to announce that Conservancy members now receive discounts at a growing number of local Shoal Creek businesses, including Bacon, Frank & Angies, Hut's, Shoal Creek Saloon and  Wahoo's. Show your support for the creek by becoming a member: family memberships are $50.

If you are interested in leading a mulching, trash pickup or other improvement project along the creek, National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 27 is the perfect opportunity. Austin Parks Foundation and the Texas Conservation Corps host this citywide volunteer day each year, and they make it easy and fun to organize a project. Register a project by August 29.

The Conservancy is seeking four interns for the fall semester. If you or anyone you know is passionate about Austin trails and parks and interested in learning more about the nonprofit field, this is a great opportunity.

The elderly are especially vulnerable to serious injuries from home accidents.A simple fall can become a serious, disabling injury that limits independence. Use the following checklist to help you insure a safe home:

• Emergency numbers and your address are posted by each telephone.

• The telephone can be reached from the floor or you carry a cell phone with you.

• Door handles are lever-action instead of round knobs.• The thermostat of the water heater is set at 120 degrees F

or lower to prevent accidental scalding.• Electrical overload protection is provided by circuit

breakers, fuses or GFCIs.• Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and in

working order.

KITCHEN• Gas range is equipped with pilot lights and an automatic

cut-off in the event of flame failure. • Countertop space and height is ample to keep carrying and

lifting to a minimum.• Kitchen wall cabinets are not too high to be easily reached.• Oven controls are clearly marked and easily grasped.• You use a sturdy, stable step stool rather than a chair to

reach objects in overhead cabinets.

FURNITURE• Chairs and couches are not too low or too deep to get in

and out of easily. Chairs and couches have full arms to aid in sitting or rising, and furniture that might be used for support when walking or rising is steady and does not tilt.

BEDROOM

• Flashlight, glasses, phone on table next to bed. Sturdy chair with arms in which you can sit to dress.

BATHROOMS• Grab bars installed on the walls by the bathtub and toilet.

Shower has a hand-held shower head with flexible hose. The shower, tub, and kitchen sink have a single-lever, anti-scald mixing faucet. Bathroom door opens outward.

FLOORS

• Bathroom flooring is matte-finished, textured tile or low pile commercial carpet (not throw rugs or bathmats). The bedroom has wall-to-wall, low-pile carpeting or a smooth-surface floor covering. The bathtub or shower has a nonskid mat or strips on the standing area. Room entrances do not have raised door thresholds. Electrical cords are placed along walls, not under rugs. Small, loose rugs have nonskid backing and are not placed in traffic areas. Foyer has a nonslip entrance.

STAIRWAYS

• Steps have nonskid strips or their carpeting is securely fastened and free of fraying or holes .Make sure you can see the leading edge of each stair tread while walking down stairs: Use tape of contrasting color. Sturdy handrails—securely fastened--on both sides of stairways.

LIGHTING• Light switches should be located near the door of each

room, at the top and bottom of stairways, and at both ends of long hallways. Hallways should be equipped with night-lights, and a night-light used to brighten the way to the bathroom at night.

Everyone is invited to participate in the Pemberton Neighborhood Garage Sale on Saturday, September 20.

If you’ve been collecting unused items over the course of the year (or decade) you might consider putting them out for sale in the front yard or driveway. Each participant is responsible for their own selling but the Pemberton Heights neighborhood association is paying for cooperative advertising and event promotion.

A multifamily sale generates better customer traffic than individual yard sales and the other benefit is that you can participate with with a handful of items which might not be enough to support a whole sale by themselves... you don’t have to offer a large number of things.

Participants are encouraged to put up their own signage as well and also to list significant items (if any) in a Craigslist posting.

Last year a few young entrepreneurs set up some lemonade

stands to provide refreshments to sale visitors and make a few dollars.

Hours of the sale are at the option of the seller but last year most people started at 8am and were closing up by 1pm. For more information contact: Jane Hayman, [email protected], (415) 516 1296.
