Depression
a darkness observed
The signs of approaching melancholy are… anguish and distress, dejections, silence, animosity… sometimes a desire to live and at other times a longing for death, suspicion on the part of the patient that a plot is being hatched against him…Caelius Aurelianus (Fifth century A.D.)

Depression
a darkness observed
My brain had begun to endure its familiar siege: panic and dislocation, and a sense that my thought processes were being engulfed by a toxic and unnameable tide that obliterated any enjoyable response to the living world.
I was feeling in my mind a sensation close but indescribably different from actual pain.

Depression

For sighing comes to me instead of food; my groans pour out like water.
What I feared has come upon me; what I dread has happened to me.
I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil.
Job 3.24-26

Depression

The Medical and psychological view
For mild depression:
• sleep and anxiety management
• watchful waiting for patients who do not want an intervention or, in the opinion of the healthcare professional, may recover with no intervention, a further assessment should be arranged, normally within 2 weeks
• exercise

The Medical and psychological view
For moderate to severe depression:
• psychological treatments
• antidepressants
• a combination of antidepressants and individual CBT should be considered as the combination is more cost-effective than either treatment on its own

Drawing the threads
Depression is common and increasing.
One of the most common mental health problems is depression. One in 6 people in the UK will suffer from depression at some point in their life [8], and it is most prevalent among people aged 25-44. According to the 2003 WHO fact sheet on mental health in Europe, 33.4 million people in the region suffer from depression in any given year, and more than 30 million people in the world have now been prescribed the anti-depressant Prozac [9].

Drawing the threads
All of which is an opportunity for the church:• we value everyone as an individual
• we are interested in the whole person
• we can provide a therapeutic social and relational setting
• we take the long term view
• we have hope

Many are asking, "Who can show us any good?"
Let the light of your face shine upon us, O LORD.
You have filled my heart with greater joy
than when their grain and new wine abound.
I will lie down and sleep in peace,
for you alone, O LORD,
make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4
Is there light at the end?
