Director’s MessageTypically the Directors message talks about all the great things the Recreation Department is doing for our residents. I can assure you the department is working hard to meet the needs of our residents and I hope the programs in this brochure will help you meet your wellness goals!

This editorial will not be the classic feature you see in the brochure; I want to get a bit more personal this time! In our lives we all have certain principles that we follow. These principles are what we believe in. For many people we have our own mottos in life. For me I have a couple of mottos I like to follow, the first is “Everything happens for a reason.” We make choices every day and because of these choices we decide what happens to us, whether that be professionally or personally. Make good choices and good things will happen! The second motto is “The only things in life you regret, are the risks you didn’t take.” We all should strive to have the courage to do something that challenges us and makes us take risks! It’s through the challenges we can learn the most about ourselves.

What is a motto you live by? I challenge you to take a few minutes and determine what your motto might be. If you don’t have one, now is a great time to find one!

Finally, you will see in this brochure a new logo with our slogan “Be Active, Be Well, Enjoy Life”. The logo depicts a tree with the department’s core wellness areas as the roots. It’s these core areas on which we build our program offerings and continue to focus on building for the future. I hope you find what you’re looking for at Penfield Recreation and remember we are always here to answer any questions.

suPervisor’s Message

suPervisor’s Message

- Tony LaFountain, Penfield Town Supervisor -The weeks and months continue to fly by. Discussion around the LaFountain household is starting to include more comments about the 2013-2014 school year. We will watch our two granddaughters begin kindergarten and second grade; as you

can imagine school shopping has begun and fall schedules for after-school programs are taking shape on the calendar. On behalf of my family to all of yours, we wish all students heading back to college, high school, middle school, and elementary school all the best for a successful school year.As you look for after-school programs that offer recreation and education, please review all the great programs our Recreation Department has lined up to help you best use down-time after school, nights and weekends. You will find engaging, entertaining, and healthy programs for all age groups. I encourage early registration as our programs tend to fill up quickly due to their quality. Also consider on-line registration at www.penfieldrec.org—it is easy, and in some cases you can save on registration fees.Several years ago Penfield, along with six other towns, two villages, two cities and the Rochester Housing Authority, formed a health care consortium designed to better manage health care costs, increase access to wellness education, and design wellness programs for employees and their families. In June, I had the honor of accepting the

“2013 Wealth of Health Award” on behalf of the Finger Lakes Municipal Health Insurance Trust Consortium sponsored by Excellus BlueCross & BlueShield and the Rochester Business Journal. The Wealth of Health Award honors innovative organizations that promote workplace wellness, improving both their bottom line and the overall health of their communities. The credit for this award goes to town employees who, each and every day, look for ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I also credit Recreation Department staff members who design the programs in this brochure and actively brand Penfield as a “wellness community!” The 2014 budget is starting to take shape. The town board’s goal is to have it adopted by October 16, 2013. Many of the same challenges face us year-on-year with increased medical costs, rising pension, workers compensation, and insurance costs. The town board continues to strive for a stable tax rate for residents by implementing more quality improvement programs, greater use of technology, and improved efficiencies. While I believe local government does a good job of listening to residents, I continue to be stressed with our leaders at the state and federal levels. I will predict that if federal and state governments do not get their arms around reducing costs and cutting spending, the act of filing for bankruptcy will be the new norm for many communities rather than the practice of filing an annual budget! The Energy & Environmental Advisory Committee (EEAC) is committed to looking for ways to continue to reduce energy costs at all town facilities. Currently, we are looking

at a solar program that could significantly offset electrical costs in years to come. There continues to be grant money from NYSERDA from monthly fees charged on all RG&E bills. The EEAC, working with the town board, is looking to bring some of those fees back to Penfield for use in developing solar generation. We will keep you updated over the next several months on how this effort is progressing. The Penfield business community continues to grow and expand because of residents who shop locally. It is a wonderful circle when we choose to take our earnings and support our business neighbors. Penfield businesses, in turn, support many town, school, and service organizations that benefit our community. Also, our local farmers and farm markets continue to offer fresh produce, so let’s make sure we support them and enjoy healthy food on our tables. Please remember, investing in Penfield businesses is an investment in our community—let’s all do our part to support community businesses.I would like to recognize and thank town staff for the work they do each and every day to support all of you, our customers. This group of dedicated men and women continually look for ways to reduce costs, advance communications, and improve the quality of life for all Penfield residents. Thank you, team, for making my job fun and rewarding!

Meet the Author Queen of the Breman by Marlies Adams DiFanteMeet Marlies Adams DiFante, local author of Queen of the Breman, a true account of a dramatic struggle as a five-year-old American thrown into the chaos of World War II. It is 1939 when five-year-old Marlies Adams travels with her family on a transatlantic journey from America to Germany aboard the SS Bremen. Marlies and her family have no idea that what is intended to be a three-month stay will turn into a seven-year struggle to stay alive. No one could have predicted the events that would unfold as the Bremen docks in Bremerhaven, Germany six days later. As World War II begins, Hitler comes into power, and all borders and ports are closed; the Adams family is prohibited from leaving Germany-now a Nazi-controlled country. In her compelling autobiography, Marlies chronicles a little girl’s unforgettable journey through starvation, bone-chilling cold, prejudice, bombings, abuse, homelessness, and fear instigated by an evil dictator.

History Sleuths - Women of the Civil War Part I Harriet Beecher Stowe When Harriet Beecher Stowe met President Lincoln in 1862, he is said to have exclaimed, “So you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war!” Uncle Tom’s Cabin is probably the most influential work of fiction in American history. This Christian epic turned millions of Americans against slavery, bringing the institution immeasurably closer to its destruction and “fanning the flames” of the Civil War. Rosemary Irwin will present an account of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s life as we begin a three part series on Women in the Civil War. The series will be brought to you from our History Sleuth program made up of a panel of volunteer community researchers who have been diligently uncovering fascinating details on some very interesting and controversial women of the Civil War era.

Adventures in Toyland; Bushels of Barbies, a Spot on Jay Leno, and So Much More! This humorous presentation explores a few of the surprising parts of life at The National Museum of Play at The Strong. Sometimes it involves journeying to Wisconsin in winter to pick up more than 1,500 Barbies (and all her associated accessories—from Kens to mansions). Sometimes it’s Hula Hooping on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” alongside one of the stars of “The Sopranos.” Or sometimes it means learning to bake with an Easy Bake Oven. The presentation includes demonstrations and audience interaction on favorite toy memories. Presented by Christopher Bensch, vice president for collections and chief curator at The Strong Museum of Play.

World War I: The 100 Year Mark2014 will mark the 100th anniversary of the first World War. A global conflict also known as the “war to end all wars,” World War I took place from 1914 to 1918 and resulted in 15 million deaths. The origins of the war remain somewhat controversial even after all these years, but the facts are there. Joseph Meli will lead this lecture and will take a look at the significant causes that set off the sequence of events that led to the ‘Great War.’

Honor FlightThe inaugural Honor Flight took place in May of 2005. Six small planes flew out of Springfield, Ohio taking twelve World War II veterans on a visit to the memorial in Washington, DC. In August of 2005, an ever-expanding waiting list of veterans led our transition to commercial airline carriers with the goal of accommodating as many veterans as possible. Partnering with HonorAir in Hendersonville, North Carolina, the “Honor Flight Network” was formed. Today, we continue working aggressively to expand our programs to other cities across the nation. Members of Honer Flight will share the history of this wonderful organization and share the moving stories that embody the spirit and work of its members.

The Making of Penfield’s Calvin Wooster Owen Archeologists, historians, writers, genealogists, curators all know the significance of finding personal handwritten accounts of a time gone by. The Penfield History Room was lucky enough to have such an archive, the journal of local Penfield resident Calvin Owen. This unique glimpse into Penfield’s past has been documented into a recently released book “Calvin Wooster Owen Diary of a Nineteenth- Century American.” Local Historian Kathy Kanauer and Ann H. Stevens have spent several years editing and supplementing this informative narrative. The journey to publish this memoir is just as interesting as the pages themselves. Join Kathy and Ann this day to hear about the challenges, delays and rewarding moments that went into delivering this piece of Penfield history.

Letters I Couldn’t Print A Conversation with Columnist Edith Lank Most of us know Edith Lank from her award-winning column in the Democrat and Chronicle, but she is also the author of a syndicated column, which appears weekly in more than 100 newspapers and web sites across the country. She is the author of 11 books on real estate, including the best-selling New York and New Jersey licensing textbooks, and one book on Jane Austen. Edith has appeared on CNN, CNBC, National Public Radio, Public Radio International, Minnesota Public Radio and the Financial News Network, and is heard here on WXXI. USA Today has called her “the Dear Abby of real estate” and the San Diego newspaper called her “the Dr. Ruth of real estate.” Join us for this very special presentation as Edith shares some of the funnier questions that have come in to the column over the years, how she came to write her weekly real estate column in the first place--and why she’s still doing it at the age of 87. And of course, if you have any real estate questions....answers on the spot.

Victorian Mourning Customs and the Civil WarThe Victorian mourning period began with the death of Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert in 1861. Devastated by her loss, she began a lifelong crusade to honor her husband and changed mourning customs across the globe. Americans, after seeing Victorias example and after experiencing the tremendous loss during the Civil War, began to mimic the intricate rituals to remember the dead. Clothing, art work, photography, funeral customs all reflected their enduring grief and catapulted the business of dying to an all new level.

Healing Power of Meditation Using Sound Energy Usha Shah

Sound Energy Healing focuses on creating sound vibrations that alter brain states, enabling shifts of consciousness, which can affect overall health and wellness. Sound and music can be powerful tools in the healing process.

Our body is a musical instrument. When the instrument is not tuned properly, a state of dis-ease or imbalance occurs. Come and experience how easy it is to meditate by listening to the sound of the crystal singing bowls. These sounds can dissolve blockages and release negative emotions so that one can experience greater love, abundance and joy.

The Four Agreements -Book DiscussionUsha Shah

The course will be a book discussion on “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. The book has been over seven years on the New York Times bestseller list. The Four Agreements stated in the book are very simple, yet very profound. To embrace and live each of the Four Agreements is to find yourself experiencing personal freedom--possibly as never before. We as people and as individuals are “conditioned” by our society that shapes our core belief systems. Our language that consists of words, assumptions and thoughts can always lead to misunderstanding and a break of relationship. We have the power to change our core beliefs and to view things differently. What is the dream that you hold for yourself? The course fee does not include the book. The book is available at amazon.com.

HisTorY/PHilosoPHY History SleuthsWe are gathering our next team of history sleuths as we research the War of 1812. Be a part of the team who will present their discoveries at the War of 1812 talk (see right column). If you are interested please contact Dick Freitas at 381-1911 for a research assignment.

History Sleuths Present...Women in the Civil War TalkThough American women were not given the right to vote until 1913, 48 years after the Civil War ended, the American Civil War transformed women’s identities—be they Northern, Southern, or slave. During the Civil War, women wanted to alleviate the suffering and, in the view of many, simply do their duty as the men did theirs. As nurses, managers, financiers, administrators, spies, and soldiers, American women changed the perception and reality of what women could do, and paved the way to full equality. Our summer History Sleuth team went to work and have uncovered a plethora of information on “Women in the Civil War”. From nurses and women soldiers to spies and first ladies, this three session talk will enlighten participants to perhaps investigate this topic on their own. Our first program talk will be held as part of the DEAR Thursday lecture series 10/3. This will be followed by two informal roundtable talks. See the dates and times below.

Dualism vs. Physicalism The Philosophy of the SoulDualists believe that the soul is a separate entity of the body and thus continues on after the body can no longer contain it. Physicalists believe the soul and the body are one and when the body is gone the soul goes with it. This dichotomy will be the basis for conversation and offer an opportunity for participants to voice their points of view on the subject as well as offer a comprehensive definition of both terms.

WELLNESS is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices towards, a more successful existence. The roots of wellness include:SOCIAL wellness focuses on how you choose to define and connect with your community and the people around you. PHYSICAL wellness refers to the role that you take in maintaining your body strength, vitality and energy. SPIRITUAL wellness refers to your understanding of your place and purpose, how you make meaning of what happens to you, and what your mind goes to for comfort or relief. INTELLECTUAL wellness means feeling stimulated and engaged with learning and staying open to new ideas and perspectives.
