The MADDTas Evening was a SENSATION!

Thursday night (last week) was Barrenjoey’s MADDTas evening for 2017. It was an opportunity

to display the talents of Barrenjoey’s students in the fields of Music, Art, Drama and Design &

Technology.

I remain in awe of what our students created or performed on the night. It’s worth noting that

more than 75% of our students choose HSC courses that contain a Major Work, with approx.

35% doing two or more courses. This is testament to the creativity of our students and the

physicality they bring to their HSC studies.

Quality was displayed, not just in Visual Arts and Photography but also in Music, IT –Timber

and Multimedia, Design & Technology, Drama, Hospitality and Textiles Design - work that was

the result of effort, application, vision… practice, determination and imagination over a

sustained period of time.

MADDTas is Barrenjoey’s collaboration between the CAPA (Creative & Performing Arts) and the

TAS (Technology & Applied Studies) faculties, and this year it incorporated 12 staff members,

from 10 subject areas involving more than 100 students.

Mostly… the displays, products and performances were by HSC students and therefore their

development over the years was incredibly obvious to us all. Personally, I reflected on how

special it is to see a student mature and progress. The student’s artistic and creative growth

paralleled their emotional maturity that was easily reflected in their Major Works.

Last Thursday unique artists & photographers, talented woodworkers, gifted musicians and

dramatists treated the audience to displays and performances all while sampling the delights

from the gorgeous kitchens of the Hospitality class. Furthermore, the Concert Big Band opened

the performance component of the evening, and wowed the audience with their technical

abilities and ‘tight’ sounds.

A triumphant success!

Congratulations to all the Barrenjoey staff for making MADDTas possible. And to all the

talented students for producing each individual piece, whatever its medium, and all the student

helpers who collectively created the impressive exhibition and showcase of student work. – You

continue to surprise and inspire me!

Barrenjoey’s MADDTas Night has become an event that any school community would be

incredibly proud of.

Well done to all involved!

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD

The People's Choice Award for the senior MADDTas night for Visual Arts was awarded to Mali

Hole for her exceptional sea life sculpture made from recycled plastic materials. In TAS the

Award went to a timber project by Kurtis Green for his wonderful Pittwater inspired dining room

table.

THE REWORD TOOL – A WAY TO REDUCE CYBERBULLYING

“reword has the potential to change the way people communicate online, not just here in Australia

but across the globe” (Chris Tanti, CEO of headspace). reword is an online tool that helps prevent

online abusive behaviour by identifying insulting statements being typed on social media sites in

real time.

Once installed, the tool uses Java Script technology to pick up combinations of insults. When a

combination is detected and identified as offensive the user is alerted with a red line through the

word/s. the line intuitively goes through insulting statements, interrupting impulsive behaviour and

prompting the user to reconsider using these words before being posted.

reword aims to encourage a change in the way people communicate online and give people a

chance to reword what they say before they cause hurt to others.

Find out more and install the tool for your child’s computer here http://reword.it/#/

Have a great week... Ian Bowsher

The next 3 pages showcase the Year 12 Major Works . Enjoy this display of incredible talent

here at Barrenjoey!

1. Once an insult is read the damage is done (headspace 2015)

2. Over 450,000 Australian children were victims of cyberbullying

in 2013 (National Children’s and Youth Law Centre)

3. 65% of 18-29 year olds in the USA have been harassed online

(PEW Research Centre)

4. 78% of young people bullied online are between 10-15 years old (Social Policy Research Centre, UNSW Sydney).

FORMER STUDENTS – CONGRATULATIONS

The Award is about individual challenge, variety of activity,

duration, support and team work and recognition. As every

individual is different, so too are the challenges that young

people undertake to achieve their Award. With guidance

from their Award Leader, activity Assessor or other Award

volunteers, each young person is encouraged to look at

themselves, their interests, abilities, and ambitions, then

set themselves challenges in the four different Sections of

the Award (Service, Skill, Physical Recreation and

Adventurous Journey).

Participants complete all four Sections at each level in

order to achieve either their Bronze, Silver or Gold Award.

At Gold level, Participants also complete a Residential

All outstanding payments can be paid via Parent Online Payments (POP)

If you feel there are any discrepancies please contact Felicity Hance on 9918 8811.

We have recently disabled the Create Message button in the Parent Portal for parents to contact

teachers.

The reason is that this message does not go directly to the teacher’s email; instead it sits in an

area of the portal that is rarely visited by the teachers.

We believe that it is more expedient for parents to contact teachers through the

[email protected] email – which is attended every day – and that way we can

ensure that the teacher will receive the email in their normal email account.

Thank you for your understanding.

COMMUNICATION WITH TEACHERS

TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY 2017

PARENT, STUDENT AND TEACHER SURVEY

This Term, Barrenjoey is taking part in the Tell Them From Me Student Survey. The survey will

provide us with valuable feedback on what our students, parents and teachers think about school

life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with students.

Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them

improve. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research company, The

Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys.

Students will be asked a series of questions, however there is also a Parent Survey. The survey

asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student

wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help Barrenjoey understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their

child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff,

activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school’s support of learning and

behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

YEAR 10 END-OF-COURSE EXAM TUTORIALS

TERM 4, 2017 – Weeks 1 to 4

Year 10 students at Barrenjoey High School this year will be offered extra tuition, at very little cost, to further

advance their studies in preparation for their Year 10 course exams.

The tutorials will assist students in improving their Year 10 results and better prepare them for their studies

in Year 11. In addition they will also be important for students who leave school before undertaking their

HSC as Year 10 exam results will form part of their Record of School Achievement.

Accordingly, small groups of students with similar skill levels in English, Mathematics and Science are

offered. Tutors are either current teachers, recently retired or ex Barrenjoey High School students who

received a Band 6 and are currently studying at university in the subject. All tutors are experienced and

dedicated.

The hourly tutorials will be held in A Block from 4pm onwards once a week for four weeks.

The program provides:

• Specific focus on revision of difficult course concepts

• Preparation of examination techniques

• Consolidation and/or extension of quality responses

• Relevant skills for senior subjects.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity – it will help to:

1. Increase students’ knowledge and skills needed for the end-of-Year 10 examination

Every alternate week the Maths staff will pose a

mathematical puzzle to ponder with a syllabus reference and

degree of difficulty (1 to 5 compasses) will be supplied.

MATHS PUZZLE TO PONDER

Mr Seymour’s Weekly Science Fact!

THE SCIENCE OF CUTE: Why Do We Find Baby Animals So Adorable?

Which area is bigger?

A (blue)

or

B (red)

* Syllabus reference:

Stage 4: MA4-

13MG

Solution

Area of region A = 𝜋 × 32 + 62 = 9𝜋 + 36

Area of region B = 𝜋 × 52 − 𝜋 × 42 + 102 − 82 = 9𝜋 + 36

Thus, regions A and B have equal areas.

Cute baby creatures are adorable; lambs gambolling in a field,

fluffy ducklings in a nest or kittens playing with a ball of wool can

make even the hardest soul melt. But what makes the ‘oohs’ and

‘aahs’ escape us when cute creatures are around, but not when

we’re faced with a swarm of bees, for example?

The science behind the cutesy faces is simple: we like baby

animals because we are biologically programmed to like human

babies, and we need to like our human bambinos so that we take

care of them, ensuring the human race lives on.

There are certain features that a lot of baby mammals have in common and these are the triggers

that make us go gooey on the inside. Among others, big eyes and fuzzy, podgy bodies push our

buttons. Babies have these traits, as do puppies, along with many other things that you might not

even notice. Ever wandered past a car and thought it looked cute? Not a coincidence. The

manufacturers of the Mini Cooper have thought ahead and made the headlights large, rounded and

forward-facing to mimic a pair of large baby peepers and send our cute receptors firing all over the

place.

The reason why we love cute things is because they flood our brains with feel-good chemicals. If

you’re having a bad day, just do a swift internet search for a baby llama and you’ll feel

better in no time. Interestingly, many people will look at that llama and think it’s just so incredibly

adorable they could smoosh it up and eat it. This is called cuteness aggression and, although it

sounds a bit weird, it’s perfectly normal. Your brain senses the cute, but then tries to

overcompensate for it! As long as you don’t actually take a bite out of the little guy, you’re fine.
