Twenty-Nine chapters across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognize the athletic achievements of men and women who rise to the “Hall of Fame” stature. The purpose of each chapter is to recognize individuals that have excelled in their chosen sport(s), inspired future student athletes, or contributed to sports and athletics through other inuential capacities. The West Shore Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame welcomes our 2017 inductees, their families and friends to the 33rd annual induction banquet.

Twenty-Nine chapters across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recognize the athletic achievements of men and women who rise to the “Hall of Fame” stature. The purpose of each chapter is to recognize individuals that have excelled in their chosen sport(s), inspired future student athletes, or contributed to sports and athletics through other infl uential capacities. This evening we are pleased to honor our eight inductees, the 2017 class, into the West Shore Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Our scholar-athlete recognition dinner will be held this July. This event serves to recognize male and female scholar-athletes from the twelve high schools within our chapter. We award several scholarships to deserving senior athletes who demonstrate the very best characteristics of academics, athletics, and community service. We are proud to be able to give recognition to these future leaders. We would like to thank our members who generously support this initiative through their donations.

West Shore Sports Hall of Fame - 2017

Gwen Wentz Alexander building, coaching, teaching, multi-tasking and service leadership that began right here on the West Shore. She

at Mechanicsburg High School. She served as captain for both teams and was named All-League in both sports, graduating in 1969. She later returned to teach and coach at Mechanicsburg High School for one year after college. hockey and lacrosse and was named All-Region in her senior

The National Team circumnavigated the world several times playing in: Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Great Britain, Germany, South Africa, Japan, Belgium and Hong Kong.

Although the team did not play in those games, Gwen received the honor of being named “Best in the World” for her goalkeeping skills. National Team to play in the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles, CA. After the Australians lost to the Netherlands, the U.S. team competed in a “shoot out” against Australia for the Bronze Medal. In Field Hockey, each team gets 10 shots on goal 7 yards out from the goal line. The

U.S. goalkeeper, Gwen saved so many shots against the Australians that by the 7th round the U.S. had secured the “Olympic Medal”.  ending with a ticker tape parade in New York City. In 1984 she was also awarded the prestigious Legion of Honor from the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation. Gwen has always considered her time on the National Team an honor and tried throughout those years to be a world ambassador for Field Hockey.

West Shore Sports Hall of Fame - 2017

 School and Towson State University. the legendary Harry DeFrank and his assistant Steve Bischof Jr., re-started the Girls Basketball program at Good Shepherd. Good Shepherd won the CYO League Tournament, and she was voted MVP.

Betty Lou is very thankful and appreciative that her parents raised her and her siblings in an environment where family values were the most important aspect of her life. Fortunately for Betty Lou and the Bischof family, sporting events simply served as family get-togethers.  Fame for honoring her this evening. This honor has allowed her to relive memories

West Shore Sports Hall of Fame - 2017

 Mechanicsburg, and attended Mechanicsburg schools from kindergarten through graduation in 1982. Watching her older brother run track and cross country made her eager for her chance to race some day too. Lois joined the junior high track team in 7th grade and began her career running the 400, 800 and 4x400 relay.  coach George Henry. Mr. Henry turned Lois into a miler and knew how to train her to have both speed and endurance. Having refused to race the mile the year before in junior high,

West Shore Sports Hall of Fame - 2017

High School and 1973 graduate of The Pennsylvania State

University. He majored in political science with a minor in

history. Bruce turned in his baseball glove and bat at age 12

runner. In their hometown of Greencastle, Pennsylvania they

were considered “unusual” as they both were constantly

running in town and the surrounding countryside.

win four District III titles and a PIAA cross country state

championship in 1965. In that same year (1965) Bruce would

move to Camp Hill. His high school track career would include

six trips to the PIAA state championships and six medals. In

the District III championship he would win two championships

in the mile run in 1968 and 1969 and four runner up silver

medals in cross country in the 880 yard run and the two mile

relays. His senior year he broke the existing record for PIAA

class B mile run by running a 4:20.2 mile. Scholarships from

Villanova, Maryland and Penn State arrived and Bruce chose

Penn State. Penn State teammates included Greg Fredericks

and Charlie Maguire, both NCAA champs or runner ups. He

mile best of 25:44.

McDevitt graduate from Harrisburg, PA (this year they will be

and regulations of the Commonwealth. Prior to working for

the Commonwealth Bruce sold commercial real estate, beer

and sporting-goods.

West Shore Sports Hall of Fame - 2017

 School and a 1970 graduate of Penn State University. Dick graduated with a B.A. in Accounting, which he used to begin his career in business, passing the CPA exam in 1973. After 12 years in public accounting and another 12 years with two local publicly held health care companies as CFO he started his own healthcare company, specializing in nursing home care, which he sold in 2002.  of the Track and Basketball teams. High school coaches that helped guide Dick in his career were for basketball (Sam Gruber, Hayes Girvin, John Grove) for football (Don Jonas, Berny Shalonis, Nick Piccolo). He was also blessed by the fact that the track coach was his father, LeRoy Richardson. Dick

New Zealand, Lahti Finland, Riccione Italy, and recently in Port Alegre Brazil and Lyon France. Most recently Dick

th out of 42 in the 65 to 69 age group at the World championships in Lyon France. Finally beating a Russian (Aleksandr Bykov) that he had lost to at least 10 times over 20 years. He was second in the US Senior games in Cleveland Ohio in 2013. He was ranked 15th in the world and 8th in the US at the end of 2015 in the 65 to 69 year old age group. He still holds the 50 to 55 year old PA Keystone games record.  Mt. Kilimanjaro. He reached the summit at 19,341 ft. and started thinking that this achievement may be the capstone of his athletic career. After returning home from “the mountain”, Dick was overwhelmed by support and encouragement from his family to continue his lifelong passion of competing

West Shore Sports Hall of Fame - 2017

with 12 varsity letters in football, baseball, basketball, and a

He played on a pair of

Married to Stephanie since 2012, the couple has two boys Holden (3) and Bennis (1) and lives in Mechanicsburg.
