Sports Day 2019

On Friday, 1st November Penola Primary School students enjoyed their annual sports day, competing for the

coveted Tanya Skeer Memorial Shield. There was a bumper crowd in attendance to support the kids who

looked splendid in their brightly coloured sports tops.

A mild to warm and slightly overcast morning provided ideal conditions for the 8oo metre and one-lap events. The tabloid events, team games, championship races and the ever-popular relays were all keenly contested throughout the day. From Foundation through to Year 7 the kids battled hard to earn every point that they could to help bolster their team’s score. The Rymill team could not contain its collective delight when it was announced as the 2019 winner of the shield, after finishing third behind Dickson and Gordon the previous year. The battle for the shield was an absorbing one throughout the day, with all 4 teams holding the lead at different stages. Going into the relays at the end of the day, Rymill held a narrow 2 point lead over Gordon, and was 10 and 16 points in front of Dickson and Woods respectively. Whilst Dickson managed to win 4 of the 5 relays, Rymill did just enough to edge out its main rival 162 points to 160. The Rymill house leaders, Emily Rowntree, Ebony Wurst, Ned Skeer and Arlie Shadbolt accepted the shield on their team’s behalf. The Gordon Bannister Cup event (tug-o-war) was full of grunts, grimaces and gut-straining, and despite Gordon’s imposing looking team, it was eventually won by a very determined Rymill outfit, comprising Emily Rowntree, Ebony Wurst, Ned Skeer, Arlie Shadbolt, Anna Copping, Toni Cadzow, Corey Shadbolt and Katherine Hunter. The Gordon team was unanimously voted as the winner of the Max Croser Team Spirit award. All house leaders demonstrated a high level of organisation, initiative, problem-solving, and attention to detail in both the lead-up to and on the day. In addition to the terrific leadership that had been on show, the tremendous enthusiasm and sportsmanship that competitors from all teams had displayed helped to create a great atmosphere and numerous proud moments. The individual competitions were also keenly fought with great sportsmanship displayed on numerous occasions. Trophy winners on the day were:

At the end of proceedings, principal, Anna Copping thanked many people including: the house leaders who

had done a terrific job both in the lead-up to and on the day; Matt Crewe for again presenting the grounds in

impeccable condition; the hardworking Parent Club and volunteers for providing lunch and refreshments

throughout the day; the Penola and Districts Little Athletics Club for the use of their equipment; Kerry Dent,

Dione McDonald and Mel Catlin for volunteering to be chief scorers; and to the staff members who put in a

great deal of time and effort to help prepare the kids for the day.

Japanese Cultural Day On Thursday 7th November 2019, the Open Access Teachers from Adelaide came to visit and held a Cultural Day in our school gym. The students created nature pictures using nature collected from outside, made Onigiri (Japanese rice balls) and played games. The students demonstrated their leadership and initiative and showed their creativity while using their Japanese knowledge. The students had an awesome time, making special memories whilst extending their Japanese learning and vocabulary.
