PENTECOST SUNDAY – June 4, 2017
Where does the Eucharist have its roots?
People often struggle with the belief of the True Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, but did you know that it has roots in the Old Testament? When the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt, God sent a series of plagues on the Egyptians to try to get Pharaoh to release them. When he would not, God finally promised to send an angel who would kill all of the firstborn sons of Israel. In order for the Israelite boys to be spared, the Israelites had to follow very specific instructions. They had to take male lamb without blemish (meaning it couldn’t have any defects) and kill it. After they had killed it, they had to spread its blood on their doorposts as a sign. The most important factor, however, was that they had to eat the lamb. (An easy way to remember these three commands – “Kill it, spill it, and eat your fill of it.”) Now, what if the Israelites hadn’t wanted to eat the lamb (what if they were vegetarian)? Could they eat a cookie cutout of the lamb and still be saved? No. The important factor here was that they had to eat what died in their place. Now let’s look at Jesus’ story. One of Jesus’ most common titles is the Lamb of God, and He too is an unblemished male, unblemished by the defects of sin since He was without sin. He was killed and His blood was also spilled on a crossbeam very similar looking to the mantle of a doorway. Finally – and here’s the pivotal connection – we now have to eat what died in our place. We can’t eat a symbol of this Lamb and be saved; through the Eucharist, we eat the One who died in our place and thus God spares us from the punishment for our sins. Pretty cool, right?

PENTECOST SUNDAY – June 4, 2017
Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions’ Story
One of 22 Ugandan martyrs, Charles Lwanga is the patron of youth and Catholic action in most of tropical Africa. He protected his fellow pages, aged 13 to 30, from immoral acts demanded of the Bagandan ruler, Mwanga, and encouraged and instructed them in the Catholic faith during their imprisonment for refusing the ruler’s demands.
Charles first learned of Christ’s teachings from two retainers in the court of Chief Mawulugungu. While a catechumen, he entered the royal household as assistant to Joseph Mukaso, head of the court pages.
On the night of Mukaso’s martyrdom for encouraging the African youths to resist Mwanga, Charles requested and received baptism. Imprisoned with his friends, Charles’s courage and belief in God inspired them to remain chaste and faithful.
For his own unwillingness to submit to the immoral acts and his efforts to safeguard the faith of his friends, Charles was burned to death at Namugongo on June 3, 1886, by Mwanga’s order.
When Pope Paul VI canonized these 22 martyrs on October 18, 1964, he also made reference to the Anglican pages martyred for the same reason.
Reflection Like Charles Lwanga, we are all teachers and witnesses to Christian living by the examples of our own lives. We are all called upon to spread the word of God, whether by word or
deed. By remaining courageous and unshakable in our faith during times of great moral and physical temptation, we live as Christ lived.
MIDNIGHT RUN
A special note of thanks to all who supported our Midnight Run. We are grateful to all those who sorted clothes, made sandwiches, drove the vans and distributed food. We were also overwhelmed by the outpouring of food, clothing, time and financial resources that helped make the evening a tremendous success. Thanks to your support, our Midnight Run Team was able to feed and clothe approximately 80 people on May 19th. It was inspiring to see the face of Jesus in the many people we met. Your kindness was a tremendous expression of the love that makes St. John the Evangelist a truly great Parish. We are planning another Outreach for the Fall, please look for information in the bulletin!

PENTECOST SUNDAY – June 4, 2017
Sunday – The Lord’s Day Clothes say something about what we think, what we value. They also influence how we behave and feel. That our culture has become so casual about everything says something about us. I cannot exactly articulate it but it seems to say, “nothing is really all that important.” But that is not true. Going to God’s house IS important. Being ministered to by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords is astounding. Casual attire in these circumstances is simply inappropriate if we really think about what we are doing, where we are going and who it is we will meet. It does not necessarily follow that we must wear tuxedos and formal gowns. But decent semi-formal attire seems wholly appropriate. Sunday is special, God’s House is special. Somethings really ARE important and our clothing and demeanor ought to reflect this truth.

Welcome to our St. John’s Family
Cremation When cremation takes place before the Funeral Mass, and the diocesan bishop permits the presence of cremated remains at the Funeral Mass, the Appendix provides adapted texts for the Sprinkling with Holy Water, the Dismissal for use at the Funeral Mass (or the Funeral Liturgy outside Mass), and the Committal of Cremated Remains. The introduction provides further specific details about how the funeral rites are adapted. The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, and the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains on the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the Church requires. Making End-of-Life Decisions As an Informed Catholic
“In many places, quality of life is primarily related to economic means, to “well-being,’ to the beauty and enjoyment of physical life, forgetting the other, more profound, interpersonal, spiritual, and religious dimensions of existence. In fact, in the light of faith and right reason, human life is always sacred and always has ‘quality.’ As there is no human life that is more sacred than another: every human life is sacred!” (Pope Francis, speech to the Italian Physicians Association, November 15, 2014) “Euthanasia and assisted suicide are never acceptable acts of Mercy. They always gravely exploit the suffering and desperate, extinguishing life in the name of the ‘quality of life’ itself.” (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Living the Gospel of Life) “What a sick person need, besides medical care, is love, the human and supernatural warmth with which the sick person can and ought to be surrounded by all those close to him or her, parents and children, doctors and nurses.” (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Declaration on Euthanasia) Death can be the gateway into eternal life. It can be a time of great hope and consolation, as well as sadness and loss. Our Church community is there to help us, and we can always draw on the Graces God bestows through the Sacraments (especially the Eucharist and the Anointing of the Sick), and in the answer to our prayers and the prayers of those who love us. If you want information, the NY State Catholic Conference has a new website and video to inform Catholics of our teachings about the end of life: http://www.CatholicEndofLife.org. Also visit the Archdiocese of New York website: http://www.archny.org/assisted -suicide.

PENTECOST SUNDAY – June 4, 2017
PENTECOST SUNDAY
“Brothers and sisters ‘No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit. There are
different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit. There are different forms of service,
but the same Lord. There are different workings but the same God who produces all of
them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some
benefit.”
On this great day we recall a new life given to the apostles and the church, we see the signs of
tongues of fire, hear the noise and feel the wind which accompanied the Spirit. That same Spirit
has directed the church through twenty centuries with great blessings, trying difficulties, but
always manifesting an abiding presence. How true that is for us today.
I ask what are the gifts present and needed by the church today. I wonder about the service
which the church can provide to our needy world. I look to observe the Spirit at work among us.
Yes, the words of Paul are manifest today.
But I also must ask what am I doing to use the gifts I have received, or what service can I
provide, or what work needs to be done, and If I don’t do it, it will always remain undone. I ask
that the Spirit of Pentecost will awaken me.

LUEGO DE UNA AUSENCIA DE BODAS EN ESPAÑOL EN MAHOPAC POR CUATRO AÑOS, YA VIENE (CON NUESTROS REZOS)
LA SEGUNDA DEL 2.017. + ALELUYA +

Appearance to the Disciples. On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear
of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. [Jesus] said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”
“Peace be with you.”
