Prayer to the Holy Spirit By Saint Augustine of Hippo

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit,

that my thoughts may all be holy.

Act in me, O Holy Spirit,

that my work, too, may be holy.

Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit,

that I love but what is holy.

Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit,

to defend all that is holy.

Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit,

that I always may be holy. Amen.

Fathers Day envelopes: Please fill out

your Fathers’ Day envelopes and return

them to the Parish Office via the collection

basket, mail or online by 12 June to be in-

cluded in the bulletin. Please be sure to

provide the name of those you wish to

honor and whether they are living or de-

ceased.

Please continue to mail or use

the online format for your

offertory donations. The ad-

dress for envelopes is 105

Queen Street, Charleston, SC

29401. The link for online donations is

for your generosity!

Beware of Phishing Emails:

Please be careful with online phishing scams solicit-

ing funds from the diocese and parish. Make sure to

recognize the proper email address. The parish and

diocese do not solicit for funds apart from the nor-

mal, established avenues: special collections at the

parish level, online at our diocesan website, and

through the Bishop's Annual Appeal. We appreciate

the generosity of those who are actively seeking ways

to support the diocese and our parishes.

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Pentecost Sunday

From the Desk of Msgr. Brovey; E-Newsletter 22 May 2020

Dear Parishioners:

As I mentioned last week, after almost two months we have now officially begun celebrating public Masses at the Cathedral.

As we gradually resume the Mass schedule, I wanted to review how to receive Holy Communion and what you can do if the chapel has already reached its capacity of 35 people:

Our parish Mass schedule: 5:30pm Vigil Mass (Saturday) 9am Sunday Mass 11:15am Solemn Mass Daily Mass: 9am Monday-Thursday

We are limited to 35 people at Mass due to current social distancing requirements and, therefore, the three weekend Masses will be streamed live. I also want to make sure that everyone who wants to receive Holy Communion is able to do so. The Holy Eucharist will be distributed at the end of Mass: those in the chapel will receive first and then those who may be outside. Weather permitting, I do encourage you to consider viewing the weekend Masses on your smart phones from the parking lot… or sitting on the front steps… or bring a lawn chair or blanket and sit on the Cathe-dral lawn while maintaining all the current social distancing norms is one important way we can do so. We did have people with lawn chairs and blankets the other weekend … give it a try!

A few notes to remember:

Social Distancing:

Couples and families are welcome to sit together.

Please be sure to keep the “6 feet rule” when seated in the chapel, when lining up to receive Holy Communion and when gathered outside on the lawn. There are yellow arrows the floor of the main aisle: please use them as a guide to space yourself from the person ahead of you.

It is recommended that people receive in the hand. If you receive in the hand please make sure you do not crumple your fingers and touch the hand of the priest …hold your left hand “flat as a pancake” allowing the priest to lay the Host on your palm and then pick up the Host with your right hand.

“Traffic Signs”: Please be observant of the “yellow traffic arrows” directing how you enter/leave the building, enter the pews and line up to receive Holy Communion.

The arrows will direct you to enter the lower chapel using one door of the set of double doors and exiting the other.

The Legare St. side door will also be open for those who wish to exit on that side.

Music Programs:

Programs may be picked up at the side door.

If you choose to use one, please dispose of your program in the hallway trashcan after Mass. They will not be reused.

Offertory Collection:

I want to thank all those who have giving to the parish via electronic giving or mailing in their offertory envelope.

An offertory basket will be placed on a table halfway down the main aisle of the chapel.

You may drop your envelope in before Mass or as you approaching for Holy Communion.

Liturgical Ministers:

I want to thank all those who have been so generous in serving Our Lord and the parish in the various liturgical ministries as Ushers, Greeters, Lectors, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

However, given current health precautions and norms, no one over 65 may serve at any our parish liturgies until further notice.

We will no longer will be using Ushers, Greeters or Sacristans at the parish Masses until further notice. It is important to reduce the number of people who set up, handle items or who are present at the door and in the hallway.

Other parish updates:

Two new seminarians from Cathedral:

Congratulations to Michael Tracy and Paul Sizemore. Bishop Guglielmone has accepted them as seminarians and they begin seminary formation for the Sacred Priesthood this Fall. Please keep Michael and Paul in your prayers as they continue to discern their vocation and begin their official stud-ies.

Scheduled Confessions:

We will begin to implement a parish schedule for the Sacrament Confession on Wednesday 3 June. More times will be added in the near future:

Confessions will be at 9:30am on Wednesday. God bless, Msgr. Steve Brovey
