Pentecost Sunday June 8, 2014

There appeared to them tongues as of fire,

which parted and came to rest on each one of them

— Acts 2:3

My dear friends in Christ,

HAPPY FEAST OF THE PENTECOST! We are halfway through the year and it seems like things went so fast for us! We are now in the month of June. CONGRATULATIONS to all the graduates! Enjoy your summer and may you find meaning and fulfillment in all the wisdom and knowledge that you have learned during your journey! But with our society so different and our world more complex than ever, the song of Ms. Dianna Ross--Do you know where you’re going to?-- would be a good starting point for reflection as you contemplate your own future. Next month, on July 26 and 27 we will be celebrating the feast of our patroness, St. Anne, with our annual parish festival. The theme of our festival this year is---LET US BE LIGHTS OF HOPE (Pope Francis)! There will be a lot of exciting new games and activities for the weekend prepared by our Festival Committee. We thank them for their dedication and joy in serving this community! Today we celebrate the feast of the Pentecost----- the day when the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles. In the Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit is described as a powerful force that came down from the sky. All of sudden this confused group of people was transformed into a courageous body of Christian believers. This organized group of human beings, the disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, was transformed into a single body of witnesses, which we now call----THE CHURCH! And so the feast of the Pentecost is rightly called the birthday of the Church, the risen body of Christ made visible. Today is really a time of rejoicing and celebration. It is a day to remind us once again of God’s continuous activity and presence in our lives and in the life of the Church. There is no question that for the last two thousand years, the Church continues to be moved and guided by the Holy Spirit. In the gospel today we experience what Jesus gave to his disciples, “Receive the Holy Spirit!” Historically, we as a Church have gone through a lot. We have gone through difficult times. We have experienced division and conflicts. We have faced schism and dissent. For example we have the Avignon Papacy from 1309 to 1377. For seventy –three years the Holy See was operated from this place. And then of course we have the Reformation. But the Holy Spirit contin-ues to play a very critical part in the life of the Church. When decisions are made on faith, the leaders of the Church rely on the presence of the Holy Spirit. What happened forty years ago in Vatican is a great example. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Second Vatican Council opened the door for change and reforms. It all started when the cardinals of the Church elected a very simple man, John XXIII, to be our pope. There is no question that we rely on the presence of the Holy Spirit for guidance and wisdom. The mission of the church as an evangelizer has been renewed and more profound. St. Paul tells us that the Spirit gives many special gifts to the faith com-munity so it might be well served. Among these gifts are wisdom, faith, healing, the gift of God’s word, the gift of discern-ment, the gift of helping others, the gift of administration, and the gift of being able to council others (1Cor 12). We thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in our Church, who continues to empower us and inspire us to open the locked doors for new beginnings and to make a difference in the world through the gift of peace, understanding, wisdom, love, and forgiveness. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are no longer powerless and locked behind the door of hopelessness, despair and fear. But now can move beyond for new beginning and for new experience and life. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHURCH! In Christ, Fr. Geoffrey

RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT At last! The power hinted at and the Spirit promised are unleashed on this holy day. We call it the birthday of the church. Try to listen to today’s scripture passages with some sense of how electrifying these events must have been to those who lived through them. Up until now, they have been waiting in the upper room. In today’s first reading, that room is filled with wind and fire and bold proclamations in foreign tongues. In the second reading, Paul describes the Pentecost event, too. His description includes all of us. The Spirit lives on in the church in each of us who are members of the Body of Christ, given different gifts from the same Spirit. Only after Pentecost could the apostles look back and understand what Jesus meant when he said, as reported in today’s Gospel reading, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ST.ANNE PARISH 2014 SUMMER FESTIVAL CORNER

On the weekend of July 26th and 27th, the Saint Anne Parish community will celebrate our annual summer festival. We invite you to join and help support our fun-filled family celebration, which begins Saturday with an outdoor Mass at 8:00 a.m. The festival will have continuous live entertainment, varieties of delicious food, games, and lots of business booth giveaways all day and will conclude with a raffle drawing on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Festival Raffle Tickets The festival raffle tickets will be mailed to all families in our parish database on Tuesday June 10th. Please read the letter enclosed. We encourage you to either buy or sell them to others. You may turn in your payments and ticket stubs at the parish office, or you may drop them in the Sun-day collection basket in an envelope marked “Festival.” If you do not receive any tickets, you can pick them up in the parish office. Please be generous because the raffle tickets make up the largest part of the festival’s fund raising. We have exciting prizes: 1st prize is $2,500; 2nd prize is a week of resort accommodations; 3rd prize is a 55-inch TV; and 4th prize is $250. Booth Sponsors & Volunteers The parish festival needs booth sponsors. You may be-come a regular booth sponsor with a donation of $100 or more. If your business would like to sponsor a business booth for a donation of $400, you may display your busi-ness’s name prominently in the booth during the entire festival. Business booths are going quickly, so get yours as soon as possible. The Festival Committee needs volunteers for game booths, food booths, set up, teardown, and the recycling team. For Logan High School students, it’s a great way to get com-munity service points. Volunteer sign-up sheets are in the front of the church and on the church patio after Mass. You can also sign up at the rectory or contact one of the festival committee members listed below.
